    MSEA Aspiring Educator Chapter Who we are? MSEA’s Aspiring Educator (AE) program works with college students from across MD who are preparing to be educators. MSEA represents 74,000 public school employees in the state of Maryland. AE members represent private four-year institutions, to public four years, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and community colleges. Mission: There are many challenges as an educator; starting with graduating from a certification and into a classroom full-time. Here in MD we lose 47% of our teachers within the first five years of teaching. MSEA has identified recruiting and retaining quality teachers as a priority for our public schools. That is why MSEA developed the AE program. Where are we? Current Chapters: 1. Bowie State University 2. Community College of Baltimore County 3. Coppin State University 4. The history begins with a section on the education of Blacks before 1800, a period in which there is little evidence of formal education for African Americans despite the presence of relatively large numbers of free Blacks thronghout the state. A section on the education of Blacks from 1800 to 1900 describes the first formal education of Blacks, the founding of the first Black Catholic order of nuns, and the beginning of higher education in the state after the Civil War. There follow sections on each of the four historically Black institutions in Maryland covering the founding and development of each, and their responses to social changes in the 1950s and 1960s. A further chapter describes the development and manipulation of the Out of State Scholarship Fund which was established to fund Black students who wished to attend out of state institutions for courses offered at the College Park, Maryland campus and other White campuses from which they were barred.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY, MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, AND SPELMAN COLLEGE PROVIDE GUIDANCE TO STUDENTS AND FAMILIES FOR LIMITED SPRING IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION AND CAMPUS RESIDENCY ATLANTA, Georgia, November 16, 2020– To allow students and their families the necessary time to prepare for the 2021 spring semester, the presidents of Clark Atlanta University (CAU), Morehouse College, and Spelman College today shared preliminary plans to begin spring courses on February 1, 2021. Reflecting awareness and anticipation of a fall spike in national COVID-19 cases, the plans include an adjusted academic calendar and a limited return to in-person instruction and campus residency for specific groups of students. These plans are subject to change based on public health information which is monitored on an ongoing basis. Each of the institutions will identify and invite cohorts of students to live and/or learn on campus while other students will continue virtual learning. Classes for the 2021 spring semester begin on Monday, February 1, 2021 for all CAU, Morehouse, and Spelman students. AUCC member institution Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), which follows a separate academic calendar, will continue in-person and hybrid instruction and has enhanced health and safety protocols. The Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center (AUC) will provide both in-person and virtual services for AUC students. After a fall semester of virtual instruction, each institution would ideally prefer to return all students to campus. However, by reducing the number of students on their campuses, CAU, Morehouse, and Spelman are best able to implement rigorous health and safety protocols designed to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
