Fogler Library Special Collections Department, University of Maine, Orono, Maine ^ Return to Table of Contents Biographical Note James B. Vickery was born in Unity, Maine in 1917, and grew up there. He was educated at Maine Central Institute and Bates College and received a master's degree at the University of Maine. He worked as a teacher in the Maine school system for many years and was a scholar, editor, historian and researcher as well as one of the foremost experts on Maine history. Over a more than thirty year period, he collected thousands of books, letters, and other documents relating to Maine history and Maine families with a - Page 3- Vickery (James B.) Manuscript Collection special emphasis on Bangor and its surrounding areas. After his death in 1997, his extensive collection of Maine historical books and documents was divided among several institutions, including Fogler Library. ^ Return to Table of Contents Scope and Contents The Vickery manuscript collection contains a wide range of material related to Maine history, Maine families, Maine towns, and the Civil War, as well as a lot of general Maine material and some general interest material. Williamson, Chief Justice of the Supreme J u d ic ia l Court o f the State o f Maine to those assembled at First Parish Church in Portland on October 12y 1969 to commemorate the Sesquicentennial o f the writing of the Constitution f o r Maine. FIRST PARISH MEETING-HOUSE, 1740 - - 1825. THE CONVENTION OF 1819 by the Honorable Robert B. Williamson "History is the story o f mankind", are the opening words of Samuel Eliot Morison's History of the American People . MAINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRIZE ESSAY 1977 The Smuggling Career of William King by Alan S. Taylor One of the most fascinating controversies to emerge from Maine’s role in the War of 1812 is whether William King, the leader of Maine’s Democratic-Republican party and the state’s first governor, illegally traded with the British. Throughout King’s political career, charges were hurled that many of his vessels had operated in violation of the revenue laws. These charges remained unsubstantiated rumors spread by his Federalist political opponents until 1824 when two of his estranged political proteges, Benjamin Ames and Joseph F. Wingate, Jr., anonymously published The Disclosure No. 1: Documents Relating to Violations and Evasions of the Laws During the Commercial Restrictions and Late War With Great Britain, etc., a collection of letters and depositions intended to prove that King and his good friend, Mark Langdon Hill, were indeed guilty of smuggling.

A History of Oysters in Maine (1600s-1970s) This is a history of oyster abundance in Maine, and the subsequent decline of oyster abundance. It is a history of oystering, oyster fisheries, and oyster commerce in Maine. It is a history of the transplanting of oysters to Maine, and experiments with oysters in Maine, and of oyster culture in Maine. This history takes place from the 1600s to the 1970s. 17th Century {}{}{}{} In early days, oysters were to be found in lavish abundance along all the Atlantic coast, though Ingersoll says it was at least a small number of oysters on the Gulf of Maine coast.86, 87 Champlain wrote that in 1604, "All the harbors, bays, and coasts from Chouacoet (Saco) are filled with every variety of fish.

The Joint Select Committee, to whom was referred the votes for Governor, given in the several cities, towns and plan­ tations in this State, having had the same under consideration, ask leave to REPORT: That the whole number of votes for Governor, which have been legally and constitutionally returned from the several cities, towns and plantations in the State, is sixty-eight thou­ sand five hundred and twenty-three; that the number necessary to constitute an election, is thirty-four thousand two hundred and sixty-two; that Edward Kent has thirty-four thousand three hundred and fifty-eight ; that Gorham Parks has thirty-three thousand eight hundred and seventy-nine ; other persons have two hundred and eighty-six; and that Edward Kent having re­ ceived one hundred and ninety-three votes more than all other persons voted for, is constitutionally elected Governor of the State of Maine. The return of votes from the town of Bristol, was not certi­ fied on the inside by the town Clerk. These votes were allow­ ed and counted; for Edward Kent, two hundred and twenty­ five ; and for Gorham Parks, two hundred and twenty-eight.

For more information, please contact [email protected]. s h e i l a McDo n a l d THE WAR AFTER THE WAR: FO R T KENT BLOCKHOUSE, 1839-1842 On March 23, 1839, the Maine State Legislature passed a resolve removing Maine’s militia from the brink of conflict in the Aroostook War. On that day, the Fort Kent blockhouse, destined to become one of the most enduring symbols of the war, was still six months away from construction at the conflu­ ence of the Fish and St. John rivers. Fort Kent did not rise out of bombast and calls to arms. He attended St. Patrick’s parochial schools and Lewiston High School, Colby College and Boston University Law School. He belonged to the Young Republicans, and became a municipal court judge under Governor John H. Reed, 1960-1965. He was Chair of the school board in 1962, nominated by Georges Rancourt, and Chair of the failed Charter Commission in 1970.
