History of True Sport In 2001, Canada’s Federal-Provincial/Territorial Ministers responsible for sport came together to bring ethics and respectful conduct back into the way Canadians play and compete. They believed that damaging practices—cheating, bullying, violence, aggressive parental behaviour, and even doping—were beginning to undermine the positive impact of community sport in Canada. The first step they took in turning back this negative tide was the signing of what is now known as the London Declaration, an unprecedented affirmation of positive sporting values and principles. The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport conducted a nationwide survey in 2002, which made clear the important role that sport plays in the lives of Canadians, as well as Canadians’ strong desire to uphold a model of sport that reflects and teaches positive values like fairness, inclusion, and excellence. In September of 2003, leading sports officials, sports champions, parents and kids from across Canada came together through a symposium entitled “The Sport We Want.” Several strong messages emerged from this gathering.

Canadian Junior Football League – Players of the Week – Week Three Ben Gorniak – Quarterback – Edmonton Huskies The 5th-year quarterback had a most impressive start to the 2011 season as the Huskies faced the Winnipeg Rifles on Sunday. Gorniak would complete 27 of 47 passes for 407 yards, throwing for 2 touchdowns to receivers Yannick L’Abbe & Anthony Barrett in the 41-34 setback. Jayson Bates – Defensiveback – Chilliwack Huskers Like the offensive side, the defensive side of the ball also had a number of terrific individual performances. For the second consecutive week the Defensive Player of the Week is a member of the Chilliwack Huskers. Defensive back Jayson Bates had a wonderful game and kept the Huskers close with two interceptions, two solo tackles, one assist, one special teams tackle and one ball batted down. Bates is in his fourth year with the Huskers organization. Kyle Willis – Returner – Winnipeg Rifles The rookie running back that spent last season with the BCFC’s South Surrey Rams made a huge impact in his first PFC game.

The 6’0, 185-pound product of Saskatoon completed 19 of 31 passes, with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. Sunday’s game was a Canadian Junior Football League first, as he and Winnipeg signal-caller Ryan Marsch who passed for 426 yards, became the first two quarterbacks to throw over 400 yards against each other in a game. Cody Hillhouse – Defensiveback – Chilliwack Huskers For the third straight week a member of the Chilliwack Huskers is the Defensive Player of the Week. The Huskers “D” saw a lot of playing time on Sunday, no- one better on the defensive side of the ball then Cody Hillhouse. The defensive back would make seven solo tackles, five assists, three special teams tackles, one special teams assist and one fumble recovery.

    …Introduction This edition of our Record Book includes some new material and recent research. First, we had an opportunity to obtain the original game sheets from former PJFC Chief Statistician Darly Slade. These sheets are from 1976 to 1982 and provide us with a hugh catalogue of lost information. Included in the Prairie papers were copies of weekly stats releases from the BC, Manitoba and Ontario Conferences. In particular there was a 1978 letter from former OFC Chief Statistician Lloyd Norton regarding the suspension of the Etobicoke-Lakeshore Bears by President Paul Teolis. In researching this matter we also found that Scarboro Rams ceased operations for the season some 10 days later and that both teams were missing in previous OFC final standings. This has been updated. Also, we have learned from Paul Shortt that the 1978 BC league had similar issues in 1978. Secondly, more newspaper articles became available for the Eastern teams of 1904 to 1913, the Manitoba juniors of 1912 & 1913, the Western Groups of the 1927 Jr ORFU, as well as the 1949 and 1970 Jr ORFU. These team standings have been update. New research information on the actual organization structure of both the ORFU and the QRFU have required us to refer to them as the Junior ORFU or QRFU per say rather than the ORFU- QRFU Juniors. The Eastern team standings are updated on this change.
