BCFC Week Four in Review By Ryan Watters – BCFC Media Coordinator

After Week 4 in the BCFC, two teams still remain undefeated, while just one team is still looking for their first victory.

Saturday night the Langley Rams recorded their first win of the season after a 28-10 victory over the at Hillside Stadium.

The Rams (1-3) were able to compile 488 offensive yards led by All-Canadian Nick Downey. He would catch six balls for 167 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Rookie quarterback Brandon Leyh was 11 of 16 for 295 yards and found Downey twice in the end zone. Leyh would spread the ball around perfectly as five other receivers caught passes including Jerod Zaleski who made five receptions for 102 yards. The reining offensive player of the week, Daniel English had just three catches for 35 yards.

On the ground the Rams would tally just 102 yards. They were led by Malcolm Freeman and his eight carries for 60 yards.

Rookie kicker Nick Naylor was good on two of three field goals, hitting from 18 and 20 yards out.

The Rams “D” would hold the Broncos to just 56 yards on the ground and created three takeaways, all three were interceptions. Jeff Paras made two picks, while Chris Mulangu had the other. Arie Nakagawa would again lead the team in tackles with five and assisted on two others. Buddy Hutchison recorded the only quarterback sack.

The Kamloops Broncos fall to 1-3 but did spread the ball around through the air as seven different receivers made catches. Their lone major came on a Jesse Neufeld touchdown pass to Brennan Plante. The lefty QB would finish 11 of 24 for 190 yards, but threw all three interceptions. Plante made three catches for 85 yards while Derek Yachison had four receptions for 60 yards.

The Broncos defence got on the scoreboard with a safety. They would also force three Ram fumbles as Wes Black, Tyler Lee and Mitch Day all jumped on the loose ball. Day’s recovery was his ninth in his career which ties him for second all time in the BCFC with three other players. The BCFC record is 13 recoveries held by Matt Begley of the Tri-City Bulldogs.

The 1-3 Rams will host the 0-4 Chilliwack Huskers on Saturday, while the 1-3 Broncos will travel to Westshore to visit the 2-2 Rebels.

Also on Saturday night the Okanagan Sun climbed to 4-0 on the season after a 49-7 win over the Westshore Rebels at the Apple Bowl.

After an injury to quarterback Bobby Davis in week three, Jeremy Mraovic made his first career BCFC start and would finish 11 of 19 for 239 yards and three touchdowns. He would also scamper fifteen yards on five carries.

The Sun would see a resurgence in their run game as Arman Bokitch made his return after an injury. The native would carry 13 times for 127 yards and scored two touchdowns, including a 55 yard dash. Daniel Xavier would rumble five times for 32 yards.

Through the air six different players would make catches. Dan Turek caught three passes for 121 yards and had a touchdown. With his performance the Winnipeg native has tied his former head coach Jay Christensen for the best pass reception average for a career. Both lead the BCFC with a 20.3 average as Christensen finished with 113 receptions for 2,294 yards, while Turek has 109 catches for 2,217 yards.

On special teams Robbie Yochim had nine punt returns which tied the single game total with two other players. The BCFC single game record is 10 held by Mike Chayka of the former in 2008. Yochim would tally 185 yards including a 50 yarder. Ben White made three punt returns highlighted by an 83 yard return for a touchdown.

The Sun defence would entice three turnovers as Alex Law and Brennan Van Nistelrooy recovered fumbles and Beau Barthel had a pick. The former Rebel would also have four tackles, two assists and two knockdowns. Steven Doege had two more sacks and set a new BCFC record with 24.5 sacks in 24 career games.

The Rebels fall to 2-2 as the turnovers and drop passes continue to plague them. They would lose two fumbles and threw an interception and were very fortunate it wasn’t more after recovering two other fumbles dropped on kick returns.

Quarterback Cat Todorovich finished 10 of 25 for 139 and a touchdown, but could have easily had 15 completions after a number of dropped balls. Both Greg Morris and Niles Goguen caught three passes each; Morris for 54 yards and Goguen for 33 yards. Vinnie Cannata caught two balls for 47 yards and had the lone touchdown.

The Rebels special teams was busy on Saturday night has kicker Quinn Van Gylswyck tallied 12 punts for 511 yards, his longest being a 58 yarder.

Defensively the Rebels were led by Colton Farago, the league leader in tackles, as he was all over the field but left with an injury in the fourth quarter. He would finish with four tackles, one assist, one sack and three knockdowns. Chris Pastro had five solo tackles and two assists. Tyler Harrison has two tackles, a block and a fumble recovery.

The 4-0 Sun will travel to on Saturday to face the 4-0 Raiders, while the 2-2 Rebels will host the 1-3 Broncos.

The only Sunday matinee game this week was the in Chilliwack to take on the Huskers. The Raiders once again would record a blow out 52-3 win. The Raiders offense would amass 560 total yards. Quarterback Jordan Yantz once again showed why he is the best QB in the league finishing 16 of 28 for 285 yards and threw three more touchdown passes including a 60 yard bomb to Andrew Smith. He would also run five times for 23 yards and scored twice. His 285 yards give him 5,893 for his career, moving him to seventh place on the all time BCFC list.

Smith would once again be the threat after five more catches for 137 yards and two majors. Michael Schaper would make four catches for 62 yards and a score, while Dustin Pederson also caught four balls for 49 yards and a touchdown.

On the ground, it was another day at the office for Jordan Botel. His 14 carries would total 104 yards. Alex Jobson would carry 10 times for 66 yards.

The Raiders “D” didn’t see a lot of minutes, but was simply terrific, allowing just 36 yards through the air. They would compile four sacks by four different players; Nick Woznesensky, Dylon Chapdelaine, Ranji Atwall and Earling Skuggedal. Chapdelaine led the club with three solo tackles and two assists, while Glenn Boyce had two solo tackles, two assists and a special teams tackle.

The Huskers fall to 0-4 and have lost 10 straight at home.

Offensively quarterback Adann Hendrickson was five of 18 for 32 yards. He would run eight times for 84 yards, leading the team. Both Dylan Boykowich and Adam Leggott caught two passes, Boykowich for 15 yards and Leggott for eight.

The Huskers only score came on a 31 yard field goal from Dan Sturm.

The defence would induce the only turnover of the game after Cody Hillhouse jumped on a fumble. Hillhouse was a force for the “D” with seven solo tackles, five assists, three special teams tackles and a special teams assist. His 28 defensive points are the most in a BCFC game since 2008 and establishes a new team record, beating the old mark of 27. Levi Weaver make eight tackles, had an assist and two knockdowns.

The 4-0 Raiders will now host the 4-0 Sun in a rematch of the 2010 Cullen Cup final, while the 0-4 Huskers travel to face the 1-3 Rams.

BCFC Players of the Week – Week Four

The Football Conference is pleased to announce the ”Players of the Week” for Week Four of the 2011 Season. For the second consecutive week all three teams are represented in the same categories.

The Langley Rams finally got in the win column in Week Four after a 28-10 victory in Kamloops. One of, if not the only reason the Rams found success was because of the Offensive Player of the Week, Nick Downey. The receiver/returner would account for 18 of the 28 points scored, making six catches for 167 yards and scoring three touchdowns. His reception average was an incredible 27.8 yards per catch. Downey is the second straight Ram to win the offensive award, after Daniel English won last week.

For the third straight week a member of the Chilliwack Huskers is the Defensive Player of the Week. The Huskers “D” saw a lot of playing time on Sunday, no-one better on the defensive side of the ball then Cody Hillhouse. The defensive back would make seven solo tackles, five assists, three special teams tackles, one special teams assist and one fumble recovery. His 28 defensive points would establish a new team record and are the most in a BCFC game since 2008. Jayson Bates of the Huskers was last week’s defensive player of the week.

On the heels of teammate DJ Weber, the BCFC Special Teams Player of the Week is Okanagan Sun returner Robbie Yochim. The speedster would return nine punts for 185 yards including a sparkling 50 yard return to set up a Sun touchdown. His average return on Saturday night was 20.6 yards. His nine punt returns was one shy of the BCFC record of 10 in a single game.

Week Five of the BCFC season has a full slate of games. All eyes will be on Nanaimo on Saturday afternoon as the remaining undefeated teams the 4-0 Okanagan Sun visit the 4-0 Vancouver Island Raiders. At the same time on Saturday the 1-3 Kamloops Broncos will visit the 2-2 Westshore Rebels. The night cap will see the 0-4 Chilliwack Huskers in Langley to take on the 1-3 Rams.

Sack Master Steven By Ryan Watters – BCFC Media Coordinator

It’s a pace that the BCFC has not seen in recent memory.

On Saturday night Okanagan Sun defensive lineman Steven Doege set a new BCFC sack record compiling two sacks against the Westshore Rebels.

Doege needed just a half sack to set the record and got it quickly. In the first quarter, Doege came flying through the line and took down Rebels quarterback Cat Todorovich for the record setting mark.

Later in the game Mark Black fell victim to another Doege sack who has now recorded 24.5 sacks in 24 career games.

The Kelowna native made an immediate impact in his first career game with a sack in Victoria against the Rebels on August 1, 2009. He would finish his rookie season with his best game of the year, compiling five sacks against the South Surrey Rams, a mark that tied a Canadian Junior Football League record for a single game. He would total nine sacks that year and would be named the Sun Top Rookie and a BCFC All-Star.

In 2010 the Rutland Senior Secondary grad would continue his torrent pace, racking up 11.5 sacks, setting a new Okanagan Sun record. He would record three multi sack games including three against the Kamloops Broncos on August 28th.

His efforts did not go unnoticed being named a CJFL All-Canadian, BCFC All-Star and BCFC Top Defensive Lineman.

In just his second season he would become the Sun all time sack leader.

This season Doege has four sacks in four games. Perhaps the most impressive piece is the fact defences are double teaming him and he is still averaging a sack a game.

PFC Week Two in Review By Tom Hallick – PFC Media Coordinator

Edmonton Huskies 10 @ 25 @ McMahon Stadium

Week 2 opened up with the Colts welcoming CJFL Offensive Player of the Week Ben Gorniak and the to McMahon.

Calgary would open up the scoring on their first possession. Nearly six-and-a-half minutes into proceedings as tailback Cuong Thai Lieu scampered 9 yards for the six-pointer. Andrew Fabian would connect on the convert. The Lieu score capped off a 77-yard drive.

The score would stay that way until defensive end Prince Baffoh would break up a Gorniak handoff, pick up the loose ball and rumble 46 yards for the touchdown that would double the Colts lead three-and-a-half minutes into the middle frame. Baffoh & company baffled Gorniak all game long as they would knock down 8 passes. The Colts led by 14 at the break.

Kicker Jonathan Heidebrecht would get the visitors on the board with the lone score of the third, as he made good from 29 yards with 19 seconds left in the period.

Calgary would put the game on ice at the 5:47 mark of the final period as rookie receiver Nik Petros would snag a 13-yard touchdown pass from starting pivot Clayton Masikewich to make it 21-3 for the home side. The Huskies would find the end zone with 66 seconds remaining as Yannick L’Abbe reeled in a 20-yard touchdown strike from Gorniak. For L’Abbe, it was his 2nd TD in as many games.

The Huskies look to break their losing string as they host the defending national titleholders Saskatoon Hilltops on August 27. The Colts will play the 3rd of their 4-game “Edmonton Odyssey” on the 28th at McMahon Stadium versus the Wildcats. Winnipeg Rifles 33 @ Saskatoon Hilltops 45 @ Gordie Howe Bowl

The Saskatoon Hilltops commemorated their 65th anniversary in their 2011 home opener as they welcomed a good portion of the alumni in their storied history as part of their homecoming game.

Saskatoon broke out of the gate very early as they had short fields to travel on each of their first three drives and capitalized with major scores each time. Receiver Kyle McGinnis would score the opening touchdown on a 3-play, 56- yard drive at the 2:41 mark. Brendon Gryba ran 2 yards to make it 14-0. The Hilltops would make it a perfect 3-for-3 as Regan Schuler would scamper 2 yards to put the Toppers up by 21, nearly 9 minutes into the period.

The Green Gunners would get on the board early in the second quarter as Brad Mikoluff’s 24-yard field goal attempt went wide. But the Hilltops would make it 28-1 as John Trumpy reeled in a 34-yard grab at 6:50. But the Rifles would mount a charge as Matt Lariviere would take a 3-yard touchdown pass which would come one play after Chad Okumura returned a Bradshaw interception 65 yards to the Saskatoon 3. Okumura would have 6 solo stops on the day. Lariviere had 5 grabs for 52 yards.

After a Hilltops two-and-out, Winnipeg quickly put up another major as Scott Naujoks hauled in a 25-yard pass. For the St. Paul’s product, it was his 1st PFC touchdown. Add a Brad Mikoluff kickoff single and 35-yard field goal, the Hilltop lead was 9 at 28-19, after 30 minutes.

The Hilltops would up their lead to 38-19, thanks to a Zack Schmidt 39-yard field goal and 5th-year receiver Jace Muggli’s 14-yard touchdown grab. The Rifles cut the deficit to 12 as rookie pass-catcher Kurt Goodrich got his first of two touchdown catches from 6 yards out.

Saskatoon would salt it away early in the final quarter as Trumpy picked up his 2nd major of the day with three-and-a-half minutes to go. The Rifles would put one more score on the board as Kurt Goodrich hung on to a 16-yard touchdown grab after absorbing two hard hits in the end zone for his second touchdown of the day. Goodrich had 4 catches for 46 yards. The Hilltops take it 45-33.

Quarterback Ryan Marsch had a sensational day as he completed 27 of 44 for 426 yards, throwing for 4 majors and 1 interception. Alex Vitt led all receivers with 6 catches for 127 yards. PFC rushing leader Martin Hovi was held to 51 yards on 12 carries.

Hilltops pivot Chase Bradshaw shook off a shaky start last week in Regina as he went 19 of 30 for 405 yards, with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. John Trumpy had 4 receptions for 140 yards to go along with his 2 scores. Regan Schuler ran 20 times for 118 yards and a major score as the Toppers ran for 212 yards along the ground.

The clubs combined for over 1100 yards in net offense as Saskatoon had 621 to the Green Gunners 496.

The Rifles return home to next Sunday for a noon kickoff against the Regina Thunder. The Thunder come in at 1-1 after a 44-10 rout of the Edmonton Wildcats. The Hilltops travel to Edmonton to face the Huskies in their home opener next Saturday.

Edmonton Wildcats 10 @ Regina Thunder 44 @

The 2nd Sunday contest featured a pair of struggling offenses as the Wildcats headed into Mosaic to face a Thunder side that dropped a 15-10 decision to the defending national champion Saskatoon Hilltops in their home opener. The Wildcats were held to a handful of points by a ferocious Calgary defense. Kolten Solomon would open up the scoring with his first of two touchdowns, a 7-yard run two-and-a-half minutes into the game. Wildcat tailback Taylor Souster would tie the game with a touchdown run late in the quarter.

Solomon would get his second TD of the day thanks to an 18-yard pass from Wyatt Catley to make it 14-7 at the 2:59 mark. Ryan Smith would cut the Thunder lead to 4 as he was good on a 34-yard field goal attempt. Regina would begin to pull away as Jon Probe had a 4-yard touchdown grab to give the Thunder a 21-10 halftime lead. The Thunder poured it on in the third as Mike Scheinbein had a 17-yard touchdown snag 2:17 in to make it 28-10. Ben Koot would get his first of three field goals to up the margin to 31-10. And then tailback Thomas Ringlein ran in from a yard out to make it a 38-10 game after 3.

Thunder kicker Ben Koot would add a pair of field goals from 33 and 30 yards out respectively to make the final 44-10. The Thunder head to Winnipeg to take on the Rifles. While the Wildcats travel to Calgary to take on the unbeaten Colts. Both games go next Sunday afternoon.

PFC Players of the Week – Week Two

Chase Bradshaw – Quarterback – Saskatoon Hilltops

The 5th-year pivot had a career-high 405 yards passing in Sunday’s 45-33 win over the Winnipeg Rifles in the Hilltops home opener. The 6’0, 185-pound product of Saskatoon completed 19 of 31 passes, with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. Sunday’s game was a Canadian Junior Football League first, as he and Winnipeg signal-caller Ryan Marsch who passed for 426 yards, became the first two quarterbacks to throw over 400 yards against each other in a game.

Prince Baffoh – Defensive End – Calgary Colts

The 3rd-year defensive end who joined the Colts from the BCFC’s now defunct Vancouver Trojans has become the kingpin of a ferocious Calgary defense that has surrendered just a single touchdown in the first two games. In Saturday night’s 24-10 win over the Edmonton Huskies, Baffoh racked up a pair of quarterback sacks, a forced fumble which turned into a 46-yard touchdown return that was the pivotal score in the victory, in addition to an assisted tackle. Baffoh is a 6’3, 245-pound native of Hamilton.

Ben Koot – Kicker – Regina Thunder

The 4th-year placekicker would be a perfect 3-3 in the field goal department in Regina’s 44-10 rout of the Edmonton Wildcats on Sunday afternoon, and 4-4 on the young season. He would connect on placements of 33, 35 and 30 yards respectively. Koot is 2nd in the PFC scoring race with 13 points, trailing only Calgary kicker Andrew Fabian, who has 15. The 6’4, 210-pound graduate of Cornerstone High School is a product of McLean, .

PFC Week Three Preview By Tom Hallick PFC Media Coordinator

SASKATOON HILLTOPS (2-0) AT EDMONTON HUSKIES (0-2) - AUGUST 27, 7PM MDT

The Toppers roll into Edmonton after winning a wild 45-33 decision over the Winnipeg Rifles last Sunday. Offensive Player of the Week Chase Bradshaw had a career-high 405 passing yards in the victory, and the offense in general seems to be firing on all cylinders as Saskatoon racked up a most impressive 621 yards. Rookie receiver Kyle McGinnis is off to a hot start, scoring touchdowns in his first two games.

Head Coach Tom Sargeant was not entirely happy with the play of his defense in the win as the Rifles put up nearly 500 yards of net offense. However, it could be partially chalked up to the injury bug taking a bite out of the defense as Graig Newman missed the game with a foot injury and Richard Zacharias sat out due to a bout of strep throat.

The Huskies have dropped their opening 2 games, but have shown well on offense as Ben Gorniak leads the conference in passing yards with 671. Sam Schwab & Anthony Barrett hold down spots in the top 10 receivers in the PFC. Schwab leads with 190 receiving yards, while Barrett holds down 9th with 113. Rookie pass-catcher Yannick L’Abbe has made an impact as well with 2 touchdown catches in as many games.

The Hilltops took the lone matchup of the year going away, routing the Huskies 75-13 in the final week of the season.

REGINA THUNDER (1-1) AT WINNIPEG RIFLES (1-1), SUNDAY AUGUST 28, NOON (CDT) The Thunder offense shook off the rust from their opening night loss to Saskatoon and put up 44 points on the Wildcats last Sunday. Quarterback Wyatt Catley looked good in his 2nd start of 2011, as he went 15 of 21 for 221 yards and 3 touchdowns. Veteran receiver Kolten Solomon had 5 catches on the day; one of those was a 7-yard TD grab. He also scored a touchdown along the ground, running 23 yards to paydirt in the third quarter.

The Rifles saw their slate evened at 1-1 with the loss in Saskatoon. Ryan Marsch had a career day as he completed 27 of 44 passes for 426 yards, 4 of those for touchdowns. The Hilltops stymied tailback Martin Hovi, holding him to only 51 yards after gaining 122 the previous week.

At the moment, head coach Greg Graceffo’s main concern would be the play of the defense as they conceded 621 yards of offense to the Hilltops after giving up 512 to the Edmonton Huskies in the season’s first week. Defensive back Chad Okumura had a 58-yard interception return to set up a major score against Saskatoon.

The 2010 season set was swept by the Thunder who scored 51-16 & 57-15 wins.

EDMONTON WILDCATS (0-2) AT CALGARY COLTS (2-0), SUNDAY AUGUST 28 2PM (MDT)

The Colts defense heads into the season’s third week on a major roll as they’ve surrendered only a single touchdown and 15 points in total in their first two contests. Defensive Player of the Week Prince Baffoh leads the way as he tallied a touchdown on a 46-yard fumble recovery which ended up being the pivotal play in their 24-10 win over the Edmonton Huskies last Saturday.

Calgary’s run game is in solid shape after Cuong Thai Lieu carried the ball for 123 yards and got the game’s opening score. One major trouble spot at the moment is at quarterback where Clayton Masikewich threw for only 75 yards last week, completing 6 of 12 passes. Should that be ironed out soon, the Colts will be a force to be reckoned with.

The Wildcats slid to 0-2 after a 44-10 loss in Regina. Tailback Taylor Souster has been one of the standouts, currently 5th in the conference rushing standings. The quarterback position is somewhat of a concern as Anthony Johnson & Jordan Olson have been held pretty much in check by opposing defenses as they’ve combined for under 200 yards in the campaign’s first two weeks.

The clubs split their 2010 season series; the Colts winning 40-30 at McMahon Stadium on September 12. The Wildcats edged the Colts 27-24 at Clarke Park in the regular season finale.

On November 13th, 2010 Tom Sargeant led the Saskatoon Hilltops to a 32- 24 victory over the two time defending CJFL Champion- Vancouver Island Raiders. The most recent Hilltops CJFL national championship () victory at Griffiths Stadium marked the franchise’s 14th CJFL Championship. For the past 24 years, Sargeant has experienced life as both a Hilltops player and coach. In 1985, he won a national championship as a Hilltops tight end under head coach Kevin Scott.

During the 1990’s, Sargeant became a Hilltops assistant coach under Dave Hardy and took over as head coach following Hardy’s retirement in 1998. That same year, he led the Hilltops to the Prairie Football Conference (PFC) finals, losing 48- 10 to the hands of the . In 2000, Sarge’s team lost to a rallying Okanagan Sun team 36 to 28 in the Canadian Bowl. In 1999, the Toppers narrowly missed the national championship game with an 18-15 Inter-Gold Cup loss against the Sun. Following this loss, Sarge rallied the Hilltops in a third straight playoff matchup against Okanagan, this time in the CJFL championship game. Sargeant led his young team to a 45- 11 win against an overconfident Okanagan Sun squad. Under Sargeant, the Hilltops won three straight CJFL titles from 2001- 2003 and in the process Saskatoon became only the fourth CJFL franchise to accomplish the feat. Photo by Gord Waldner The StarPhoenix Coach Sargeant credits his success to creating organizational culture predicated on Blue and Gold tradition, recruiting character players from within the Province of Saskatchewan along with his loyal and consistent coaching staff.

As Saskatoon Hilltops head coach, Tom Sargeant has won a total of five CJFL national championships and was twice awarded the CJFL’s Gord Currie Coach of the Year Award in 2000 and 2003. Tom is supported by his wife Kris, a passionate Hilltops fan and their two children Macy and Abby.

2011 OFC Preview By Sam Preston – OFC Media Coordinator

St Leonard Cougars Steve Lalonde Head Coach

Summary of 2010

Team finished with a record of 5-3 and lost in the Semi-finals

Prediction for 2011

2011 has the St Leonard Cougars entering a new era. They have a new head coach in former CIS Head Coach and NJCAA Head Coach Steve LaLonde taking over. He has brought in an almost entirely new coaching staff with only a couple of returning coaches and a new attitude to the Cougars. They are following the motto “ALL IN” for the 2011 season. There is a lot of excitement this year with new schemes on both Offense and Defense but also some checked confidence as it will take time for everyone to get familiar with the new schemes and new expectations.

How does the team look for 2011 in regards to 2010? The team looks very good albeit young, as there is a nice mix of returning and new players competing for positions. The skill positions are very deep with at least 2 starters competing at every spot. O-Line and D-Line are solid but lacking depth. There is a very positive attitude surrounding the players. They are playing with renewed confidence but more importantly with strict discipline.

What do you believe your strong areas, Offence/Defense/Special Teams etc. of the team are? It is still too early to tell but overall team speed and athleticism is very good. Offensively and Defensively, the players are learning new schemes and are beginning to show explosiveness on offense and aggressiveness and an attacking style on defense. There is also a strong emphasis on Special Teams, which should show improvement from last year. Our starting O-Line and D-line have all returning starters and should be one of our strengths going into the season

Who are your star players? Right now it is too early to tell as we have so much competition for spots it is not fair to point out one or two players. Our motto is “All In” and therefore we are a TEAM with one heart and one mind and would rather emphasize the team than one or two players.

Who are your new player additions and their high points? Unfortunately again it is hard to pinpoint new players and their high points as since we are a new staff all players are new to us and we are evaluating them on a daily basis

What has changed in the team compared to 2010, making the team more competitive? The biggest change is at the top. With a new Head Coach and new staff there has been a renewed excitement brought into the Cougars locker room. There is much more emphasis on actions and accountability and a new emphasis on discipline both on and off the field. This has created a more family atmosphere among the players, which has also created more competition among the players but also more support among the players for one another.

The players have committed 100% to the new way of Cougars Football and we are all looking forward to an exciting and successful 2011 season.

Hamilton Hurricanes Jason Hayes Head Coach

Hurricanes, Leadership key to title...

Summary of 2010 Our team battled some "must" win season games last year, which got us prepared for our playoff run. Our defence turned in spectacular efforts to lead us to the OFC final.

Prediction for 2011 St Leonard and Ottawa will again be the favourites going into the season.

Team outlook The Hurricanes this year will be missing 3x CJFL player of the year Aram Eisho (McMaster) and team MVP Richard Akiki (St Marys). It will be pivotal that we find new team leaders to work towards another OFC title.

Strengths We hope to be balanced team offensively with most starters returning. Defensively we feel our depth can help keep us in the upper echelon.

Star Players. Our team will look to our OL with 5 seniors and our DBs with Tiger cat prospect Jamal George retuning and Cody Lynch (former OUA rookie of the year).

Rookies Corner Steven Jordan will add to a good secondary and the coaching staff are excited to see many young receivers come game day.

Changes Our team has 80 players currently on the roster making for some interesting position battles and tough dress competition.

Who are your new player additions and their high points? Tony Warrington WR 6'5 225 and he runs well.

Burlington Braves Neil Lumsden Head Coach

Braves ready for 2011

What is your prediction for the Burlington Braves for 2011? I’m a rookie coach to the CJFL but I do know that there are a lot of very talented players and coaches in this league & the Braves look forward to a competitive 2011 season.

How does the team look for 2011 in regards to 2010? I can only judge on what I’ve seen in our summer workouts and training camp and I know I have a group of players that are excited about the upcoming season and the fact that our home field at Nelson Stadium has a new synthetic surface it will make the home game experience a good one.

What do you believe the strong areas of the team are? Again having only seen last years team in action a few times and now having reviewed all the 2010 game video we’ll be very similar to last year with respect to the pass and run systems. The Braves have lost some key vets from the 2010 6-2 team so we’ll be looking for a few new players to step up and distinguish themselves.

Who will be your impact players? Returning players like Jason Diston, Bryan Summers, Evan Thompson will play key roles on the team

Who are your new player additions and their high points? Answers the last 2, too many to count and as all coaches know questions will be answered once we get on the field and play a game so simply our rookies need to play a key role in our success.

What has changed in the team compared to 2010, making the team more competitive? In 2010 the Braves were very competitive at 6-2 and were well coached and my plan is to take what was handed over and build on the work that Coach Davoren & his staff have done.

London Beefeaters Jim Stevenson Media Coordinator

Preparations well underway for the 2011 season:

The first two weeks of the Beefeaters’ pre-season camp are done and things are progressing well for the Beefs. Week 1 was spent at our WADA training facility and was filled with testing, team meetings and on field drills for the various positions. Team sports psychologist Dr. Natascha Wesch also held a session with the players.

For week 2, and the rest of the season, the team moved to the practice fields at John Paul II C.S.S. The team will continue to work out and study film at WADA on Wednesdays throughout the year. As Fanshawe and Western students start to arrive in London, the roster continues to grow and the executive and coaching staff are cautiously optimistic about the upcoming season. So far there is a good mix of veterans and rookies. Leading the returnees are Hamilton Ti-Cat prospect Rob Varallo, All- Canadian defensive back Chris Vanmeppelenscheppink, All-Star kicker Carmine Gentile along with veterans Rob Bowman, Grant Weaver, Tyler Annen, Kyle Woldenberg-Puyda, Mike Walsh, Cody Burt, Cam Booth, Dave Clark, Mike Coombs, Rob Mori, Justin Thomson, Pete Moressa and Malcolm Noel. Two players who came to us last year from Western are back in camp, David Boric and Trevor Williamson.

Returning after a year’s absence are Ryan Harvey and Travis Kosmala. Among the rookies so far, the likes of RB Travis Ryan from Lucas, QB Nick Chapman from St. Joe’s, QB Justin Van Horik from Banting, OL Barry Clarke from Strathroy, LB Colton Cook from Beamsville, Evan Emery from South, David Garcia from STA, DB Kent Jones from Banting, DB Percy Jones from St. John’s, DL Chris Lass from St. Joe’s, LB Kevin Pera from Laurier, Steve Plaine from Strathroy, Jason South from Petrolia, Jordan Warwick from Clarke Road, Derek Jacobs from St. Joe’s and Jordan Thomas from Holy Cross in Strathroy have worked hard to make the team. As mentioned above, players are appearing daily as Fanshawe and Western students start to return to town for the fall.

Practice continues Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at JPII throughout the season except, of course, for those weeks when game day is Friday.

The team has added Aaron Geisler, a former O.F.C. All-Star running back, to the coaching staff. Besides coaching with the Beefs, Aaron is enrolled in the Masters of Coaching program at UWO. Head Coach Brad Winder’s other coaches include Tim Thomson, Nick Teall, Rob Annen, Cory Watson and Kyle Patience. Mike Circelli, from the UWO coaching staff, and former Waterloo Warrior player John Kublinskas, who now coaches at Laurier S.S. in London, have helped out at the pre-season camp. Rob Palbom, from WADA, returns as team trainer and John Hakkers is back as equipment manager.

The Beefeater coaches and executive expect this to be a very competitive year in the O.F.C. It is their hope, nevertheless, that by the end of the regular season they emerge as a strong candidate to capture the O.F.C. Championship and earn the right to host the Canadian Bowl in November.

Windsor AKO Fratmen Mike Lachance Head Coach

AKO Second to None

The 2010 OFC Season was a great year for the OFC. It was very competitive and balanced throughout the season. Here in Windsor, it was a frustrating year because we never established exactly what we were as a team. AKO never gained a "Team Personality" and therefore never reached our potential.

As for the 2011 campaign, it will once again be another fantastic and competitive year in our Conference. Our leadership in the OFC is outstanding, second to none, and we are definitely on the right track.

In 2011, AKO will look to rebound and re-establish itself as a power in the OFC, and will be looking forward to being a contender this season. Key areas on the team will be the Defence's speed and athleticism. The Special Teams will also be dynamic, and will boast the return of All-Canadian Punter Jason Schneider (General Amherst, Amhertsburg, Ont.). On Offense, the Fratmen will look to rebound from 2010, and run the football with authority in the 2011 campaign.

AKO has had to endure many changes in the off-season, and some new administrators were brought in to help with the business aspect of the team. However, the biggest and most notable changes occurred with the hiring and promotions of three new coordinators. First, Jeff Baril was hired to be the Offensive Coordinator coming in from Winnipeg, .

Secondly, Jerry Brun was promoted to Special Teams Coordinator from his previous position as DB's Coach. Finally, former AKO Head Coach Mike Morencie returns to the Fratmen coaching staff as Defensive Coordinator after spending the past 15 years at the University of Windsor, of which 13 years were spent as Head Coach and 2 season as Offensive Coordinator. In addition to the changes on the coaching staff, AKO welcomes in 53 new players, and will boast a new attitude in its quest to win the OFC's Teddy Morris Memorial Trophy and the 2011 Canadian Bowl. AKO's key returning players include: FB Alex Gouin (General Amherst, Amhertsburg, Ont.), LB Mason Beekhuis (Sandwich, LaSalle, Ont.), LB Troy Holman (Holy Names, Windsor, Ont), DL Kyle Nicoletti (Sandwich, LaSalle, Ont.), DB DeAndre' Jones (Herman, Windsor, Ont.), WR Derrick Hurst (General Amherst, Amhertsburg, Ont.).

AKO's new editions/rookies include: RB Beau Lumley (Herman, Windsor, Ont.) – outstanding athlete, U.S. Scholarship hopeful, 2010 WECSSAA Newman Conference Offensive Player of the Year DB Jake Nicoletti (Sandwich, LaSalle, Ont.) – tough, hard hitting, great against the run, 2010 WECSSAA Wilson Conference Defensive Player of the Year DB Zach Shuian (Blenheim DHS, Blenheim, Ont.) – tough, hard hitting, great in coverage, OL Mike Main (Winnipeg, Manitoba) – physical and athletic at the point of attack WR Nick Baldassi (Assumption Collegiate School/, Windsor, Ont.) – big, strong, physical WR, who has transferred over after starting for 3 seasons for the Windsor Lancers.
