Winnipeg took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out, RBI single from Logan Hill before the Saltdogs scored nine unanswered runs. Curt Smith tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first and was followed by a two-out, RBI double from Ryan Long. Lincoln scored in the second on a Goldeyes’ error, and took a 9-1 lead in the third on a two-run homer from David Vidal, a solo shot from Skyler Weber, and a three-run home run from Justin Byrd. The Goldeyes scored a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from Dakota Conners. Lincoln re-extended the lead to 10-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out, RBI single from Byrd. Winnipeg score twice in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch and a Kyle Martin RBI single. Martin doubled home a run in the top of the ninth to provide the game’s final margin. Eduard Reyes started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing nine earned runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings. Reyes walked four and struck out four. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE EXPLORERS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 131-109 all-time against the Sioux City Explorers, including a 69-45 record in home games, and a 44-35 record at Shaw Park. The Explorers are one of the last remaining original members of independent baseball, having started as a charter member of the Northern League in 1993. In terms of total years, the Explorers are tied with the Sioux Falls Canaries as the longest- standing independent franchises still operating in their original locations. The Explorers are the only team in American Association history with two seasons of 70-plus wins. The Explorers won a league-record 75 games in 2015, and notched 71 victories in 2018. Steve Montgomery enters his seventh season and eighth overall year as Explorers’ manager, and has guided Sioux City to the postseason four times (2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019). Prior to Montgomery’s arrival in 2014, the Explorers had last reached the playoffs in 2008. Montgomery previously served 10 seasons as pitching coach for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. During the Goldeyes’ inaugural 1994 season, Winnipeg beat Sioux City in the Northern League Championship Series to claim their first league title. The following year, the Goldeyes won an extra-inning, one-game playoff at Lewis and Clark Park to advance to the Northern League Championship Series for a second straight year. Bobby Post, who pitched three seasons for the Explorers from 1997-99, is in his eighth year and seventh season as pitching coach under Montgomery, and his 10 th year and ninth season overall in that role for the Explorers’ organization. The Explorers did not participate in the 2020 American Association season as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 32-35, in fourth place in the American Association North Division, and 12.5 games behind the Milwaukee Milkmen. The Goldeyes just lost two of three to the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park. The Goldeyes are tied for fourth in the American Association in hitting (.284), 10 th in pitching (6.05), and tied for fifth in fielding (.979). The Sioux City Explorers are 39-29, third place in the South Division, and 6.0 games behind the Kansas City Monarchs. The Explorers just won two of three from the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Lewis and Clark Park. The Explorers are tied for sixth in the league in batting (.272), second in pitching (4.47), and tied for fifth in defence (.979). This is the second of two head-to-head series this season between Winnipeg and Sioux City. TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes go with rookie PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS right-hander Landen Bourassa who is 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA 8/4 vs. SC: RHP Dylan Burns (0-1, 3.52) vs. TBA in two starts this season. Bourassa took a no-decision at 8/5 vs. SC: TBA vs. TBA Sioux City last Tuesday, allowing three earned runs on three hits in 4.0 innings. Bourassa walked two and struck out three. The Goldeyes won the game 8-7. Bourassa just finished his college career at the University of San Francisco (San Francisco, California) where he was 7-4 with a 2.88 ERA in 15 starts for the Dons as a sixth-year senior. Bourassa pitched four seasons at San Francisco from 2018-21, combining for a 16-9 record and a 2.93 ERA in 34 games, all of them as a starting pitcher. Prior to arriving at San Francisco, Bourassa pitched two seasons at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. Bourassa is 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in one career start against Sioux City. Tonight will be Bourassa’s first career appearance at Shaw Park. The Explorers have not yet announced their starting pitcher. GOLDEYES WILL RETURN TO WINNIPEG: Last Thursday, the Winnipeg Goldeyes announced they will return to Shaw Park in Winnipeg beginning August 3 rd . 20 games over 19 calendar dates at Shaw Park have now been added to the Goldeyes’ remaining schedule. The Goldeyes last played at home on September 2 nd , 2019 vs. Sioux Falls. GOLDEYES SIGN CANADIAN ROOKIE VASQUEZ: The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed right-handed pitcher Jose Vasquez on Wednesday. Vasquez is a true rookie who finished his college career in 2019 at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. The Cambridge, Ontario native was 2-2 with two saves and a 6.75 ERA for the Demons in 14 relief appearances, striking out 23 in 20.0 innings. GOLDEYES SIGN CANADIAN JANISSE: The Goldeyes signed right-hander Skylar Janisse on Tuesday. Janisse was 3-1 with a 5.56 ERA in four starts and one relief appearance for the pop-up Yinzer Confederacy’s Road Warriors last season. The Maidstone, Ontario native is in his sixth season of professional baseball, and is 18-10 lifetime with two saves and a 4.88 ERA in 72 appearances, 29 of them as a starting pitcher. EXTRA, EXTRA: Through 67 games, the Winnipeg Goldeyes are tied for first the American Association in doubles (144), and rank second in triples (21). The Goldeyes are on pace for 215 doubles and 32 triples. The franchise records in those categories are 206 doubles in 2011 and 30 triples in 1999. STEADY PRESENCE: Goldeyes’ infielder Raul Navarro had a career-high 18-game hitting streak end on July 16 th at Fargo-Moorhead. Navarro has also had streaks of nine and 14 games this season. Navarro has hit safely in 53 of 66 games this season, and has reached with a hit, walk, or hit by pitch in 60 of them. RUN PRODUCER: Goldeyes’ first baseman Kyle Martin is third in the American Association with 74 RBI. Since July 1 st , 2019, Martin has 175 RBI in his past 188 games as a member of the Goldeyes. Martin led the American Association with 51 RBI in 2020. GRAND TIME COMING: Kyle Martin hit a grand slam home run on July 21 st vs. Houston in the second game of a double header. It was the Goldeyes’ first grand slam since Willy Garcia homered with the bases loaded on August 21 st , 2019 at Chicago. Six days later, Martin hit a grand slam at Sioux City. TRIPLE THREAT: Goldeyes’ infielder Kevin Lachance tied a franchise single-game record with two triples on June 16 th at Cleburne. The record was last accomplished by Josh Romanski on July 2 nd , 2016 vs. Sioux Falls. DOUBLE DOWN: Following postponements on June 8 th and 9 th , the Winnipeg Goldeyes now have nine double headers that have either been played or remain on their 2021 schedule. The nine double headers would tie a franchise record. The Goldeyes played nine double headers during the 2009 season. The pandemic-shortened 2020 season ranks next with seven double headers. TENNESSEE BOUND: Due to the closure of the Canada/US border, the Winnipeg Goldeyes partnered with the Jackson Generals professional baseball club to host Winnipeg at The Ballpark Jackson at the beginning of the 2021 season. The Goldeyes played 33 (18-15) games in Jackson, Tennessee and anticipate a return to Shaw Park in Winnipeg on August 3 rd . The Generals were a Double-A Southern League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, and Arizona Diamondbacks from 1998-2019. The franchise hosted the Southern League All-Star Game on two occasions, and won four Southern League championships. EYES ON THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION: Since the start of training camp on May 6 th , the American Association has sold the contracts of 50 players to Major League organizations. The Goldeyes have had four players picked up since then, including RHP Ryan Dull (Seattle Mariners), RHP Josh Lucas (Arizona Diamondbacks), IF Alexis Pantoja (Arizona Diamondbacks), and RHP Cory Thompson (St. Louis Cardinals). AMERICAN ASSOCIATION BACK TO FULL STRENGTH: The American Association returns to 12 teams and a 100-game schedule in 2021. The league is split into two divisions, with the top two regular season winning percentages from each division qualifying for the postseason.
