Jonah Smith (1-2) earned his first professional victory shutting down the powerful Goldeyes offense over seven frames allowing only a single run in the sixth inning, he scattered nine hits, all of them singles while walking only a single batter and striking out five while tossing a career high 114 pitches. Smith was buoyed by the Explorers offense who saw the first five men to the plate retired before a Lane Milligan double with two gone in the second was followed by a Sebastian Zawada two run home run to put Sioux City on top 2-0. The X’s bats then exploded in the third plating six runs. It began with one out in the inning and runners at first and second. A LT Tolbert base hit to right field pushed the X’s lead to 3-0 and the end of the play resulted in runners at second and third. Seamus Curran collected his first hit as an Explorer with a double down the left field line, scoring one. And Lane Milligan on a full count homered to center fielder to break it open for Sioux City making it 7-0. Immediately following Milligan was Zawada with his second home run of the night to cap the rally for the X’s at an 8-0 score. Taking the loss for Winnipeg was Jorge Gonzalez (2-4) who allowed eight runs on eight hits in three innings, while striking out four and walking just one. The Goldeyes plated a run in the sixth on a Wes Darvill single, and the X’s finished off their scoring in the eighth with an RBI single from Curran who had a three hit, three RBI night in just his second game with Sioux City. CHALLENGES CONTINUE AS GOLDEYES HEAD HOME TAYLOR ALLEN – WINNIPEG FREE PRESS – WEDNESDAY, JULY 28 th Ask Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney how challenging it's been playing away from Shaw Park for the past two seasons and he'll begin to chuckle. Where to even begin? "Well, it starts in the offseason when you're trying to put your team together and you're calling players and telling them who you are and who you work for," Forney said in a phone interview. "Players know that the Canadian border is closed. Just the fact that you're trying to build a team without a place to play, you don't even know what to tell them or where you're going to play. It's very difficult." It was determined the Fish would play this season in Jackson, Tenn., until the Canada-U.S. border situation allowed for them to return to their downtown Winnipeg ballpark. The Goldeyes, who were 30-31 heading into Tuesday night's contest in Sioux City against the Explorers, went 18-15 at The Ballpark at Jackson despite averaging a league-worst 579 fans per contest. "We had a home schedule playing in Jackson, but it's not our home. You're playing in an empty ballpark and it's a grind," Forney said. "You just don't get excited for it every day. Players need that little adrenaline boost every night. When you're playing every day, it can be exhausting mentally, physically, and emotionally on you. You need that little boost from someone rooting you on and we've been without that for the past couple years." The Goldeyes have already said their goodbyes to Jackson as their final game there took place Sunday. After their current six-game road trip, the Fish will make their triumphant return to the Manitoba capital next week and play their real home opener Tuesday evening against Sioux City. There's no capacity limit but fans must be fully vaccinated to attend. The Goldeyes have 20 home games left on the schedule and started selling single-game tickets Tuesday. Returning to The Great White North doesn't come without it's own fair share of obstacles, though. "Some of the people that have been on your team all year aren't coming because they're not vaccinated," said Forney. "You're going through a little bit of a clubhouse breakup as well… No one's team is fully vaccinated and that includes mine. I'll probably have 22-24 guys but they won't be the guys that I've been playing with." And just how hard is that going to be? "I guess we'll find out," Forney said. "It's not going to be good." Forney has already lost his hitting coach Kash Beauchamp as the 58-year-old from southwest Missouri left the team last week as he's not vaccinated and didn't want to follow the American Association's new mask mandate.

  • Kash Beauchamp Was Born Into Baseball. His Father Jim
Kash Beauchamp was born into baseball. His father Jim Beauchamp spent 50 years in professional baseball, playing 10 in the Major Leagues for five different teams, was Bobby Cox's bench coach for 9 years where the Atlanta Braves won 9 division titles, a world championship, and three pennants. Jim spent the remainder of his career with the Braves as the supervisor for minor league field operations until his passing on Christmas day in 2008. The experience of growing up in the game obviously impacted Kash Beauchamp's career. After a stellar high school career as a three sport athlete, Kash accepted a scholarship to Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma where he was immediately drafted as the first overall pick in the January, 1982 Major League Baseball Draft ahead of such future stars as Kirby Puckett and Randy Meyers. Beauchamp began his pro career in Medicine Hat where he was a member of the 1982 Pioneer League Champion Medicine Hat Blue Jays. Kash garnered all-star honors after hitting .320 and playing terrific defense in center field. Beauchamp was promoted to the South Atlantic League in 1983 where he played on a star studded team that included, Cecil Fielder, Jose Mesa, Pat Borders, Fred McGriff and David Wells. In 1984 Beauchamp was again promoted to the Carolina League where while playing for the Kinston Blue Jays, he was the MVP of the Carolina League All-Star game by going 5-6 with two triples and a HR with 5 RBI. The same year Beauchamp was voted by Baseball America as the Best Defensive Outfielder and Outfielder with the Best Arm.
