It is established under the UTAR Education Foundation and registered under the Malaysian Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996. Guided by its vision to be a global university of educational excellence, UTAR is highly reputed as one of the fastest growing private higher education institutions in the country with phenomenal growth in all aspects of its development since its inception. With the first intake of only 411 students in its Petaling Jaya campus in 2002, the University’s enrolment has now reached more than 22,000 students with campuses located in Kampar, Perak and Bandar Sungai Long, Selangor. UTAR has graduated over 67,000 students since its inaugural convocation in 2005 and has made impressive strides in establishing a strong reputation as a comprehensive University with dedication to achieving excellence in teaching and research. As a University by the people, for the people, UTAR has always been a University with a solid foundation, a strong sense of community spirit and a reputation for academic and research excellence. With a scenic campus in Kampar and a purpose-built campus in Sungai Long, UTAR has a growing regional presence and an expanding international profile with over 400 international partners, more than 100 external examiners and more than 130 industry advisors for our academic programmes. While the COVID-19 pandemic has transformed university learning to include online teaching and learning, I believe this itself is also educational as additional skills are required to conduct online learning and assessments, and a more concerted effort has to be taken for time management while learning from home. Nevertheless, you will get to experience university life over the next few years and to make new friends. I hope that the experiences gained will add to your growing perspective of life, enhance your personality, and help you gain valuable life lessons. Do treasure your time in the University and do stay focused to excel in both your studies and your communication skills. With dedicated focus on achieving excellence in teaching and research, UTAR has been making impressive strides in establishing a strong reputation as a University providing affordable quality education. The University has consistently attained awards for its efforts towards educational excellence. UTAR retained its #501-600 ranking for the fourth time since 2017 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2021. In addition to that, UTAR is ranked #119 in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2020 and ranked #157 in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings 2021. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Graduate Employability Rankings 2020, UTAR is ranked #251-300. With such recognition accorded to the University, I hope that the same spirit of achievement and success will be shared by all students to adopt a positive attitude in learning and to strive for accomplishments that will make you better persons. Learning is a pervasive life-long process and working hard to attain your goals is essential for progress. The passion to explore, discover and acquire new knowledge should be the way to remain competitive in the cyber age of the 21st century. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University has been following the Standard Operating Procedures and the guidelines from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Higher Education with proper physical distancing, temperature monitoring and the wearing of face masks on campus. This is the new norm for everyone on campus and we look forward to your cooperation to ensure that the procedures for health and safety are followed. We welcome our new students and we look forward to your commitment and participation in your programme of study. An exciting journey awaits you. Do your best to make it a memorable and successful one. You are now a part of our family. We are the Student Representative Council (SRC). We will strive to aid your welfare and benefits in various aspects of your university life. We are always available and open to hear your suggestions as feedback for improvements so that we can forward to the University for consideration. As a first year university student, you will begin to face new challenges and opportunities. Be resilient when encountering adversities, and be courageous to seize the occasion. Additionally, a university life is not just about academic development, you should always attempt to step up and grow out of your comfort zone, armour yourself, establish new bonds and meet interesting people that will create memories and legacies on campus. There is a saying that, “university students are the conscience of society, and the eyes of the times.” SRC urges all UTARians to pay attention to the current affairs happening around us. We, the SRC believe that being university students, we should be more perceptive of people, places and issues around us, and learn to think critically to create a voice for good changes when necessary. Besides, we firmly believe that a university is also a place to shape future leaders and equip them with the right knowledge and experience to be even better persons. Therefore, we hope that you will have the courage and ability to think critically, judge fairly and make informed decisions in all that you do so that you can become positive citizens of good changes in society and be good role models for others. Last but not least, we wish you all the best and have an amazing journey ahead in UTAR!
