Previous studies suggested that the activities around the Pas gave a great impact to the latter. Thus, the implementation and management of the surrounding areas – Buffer Zones (BZ) are necessary to safeguard the PAs. This study interviewed in- depth, six stakeholders of TB and the adjacent areas. Results indicated that although all stakeholders agreed on the overall concept and the importance of the BZs, there are disagreement in term of threats and opportunities derived from the potential implementation of it. • Seasonal Variability of Groundwater Quality in Kapas Island
Chapter Seasonal Variability of Groundwater Quality in Kapas Island, Terengganu, Malaysia Mohmadisa Hashim, Arijatul Wardah Ahmad, Zahid Mat Said, Nasir Nayan, Hanifah Mahat, Yazid Saleh and Koh Liew See Abstract The chapter aims to evaluate the groundwater quality levels in Kapas Island, Terengganu, Malaysia during the monsoon changes of the Southwest Monsoon (SWM), Monsoon Transition (MT) and Northeast Monsoon (NEM) in 2018. Four locations were used for groundwater sampling namely, the Kapas Coral Beach Resort, Kapas Beach Chalet, Pak Ya Seaview Chalet, and Kapas Island Resort. Three water samplings at each station for every month in the monsoon. Six parameters of the Malaysian Water Quality Index (WQI), i.e., dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS) and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), were used to evaluate the water quality. The findings showed the groundwater quality parameters are in Class I and II. However, according to WQI Malaysia, the water quality status during the three monsoons is slightly polluted. During the SWM, the WQI value was 76 (Class III), the MT was 77 (Class II), and the NEM was WQI 71 (Class III). Given this status, it requires more intensive water treatment as it is not suitable for direct drinking water supply. The implications of the study show that the quality of groundwater in Kapas Island has to improve by the tour operators. Keywords: water quality index, groundwater, slightly polluted, water treatment, island tourism 1. Introduction The increase in the population of an area will have an impact on the demand for clean water supply.

  • Knowledge, Attitude and Practice on Antenatal Care Among Orang Asli Women in Jempol, Negeri Sembilan
Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine 2011, Vol. 11(2): 13-21 ORIGINAL ARTICLE KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE ON ANTENATAL CARE AMONG ORANG ASLI WOMEN IN JEMPOL, NEGERI SEMBILAN Rosliza AM 1, Muhamad HJ 1 1Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. ABSTRACT The maternal health status of Orang Asli women in Malaysia was noted to be lower as compared to other groups of population in the country. This study aimed to determine the level of knowledge, attitude and practice on antenatal care, which is a vital component of maternal health among the Orang Asli women in three Orang Asli villages in Jempol District, Negeri Sembilan. All women aged between 15 to 49 years old who had at least one antenatal experience were interviewed using a structured, pretested questionnaire. A total of 104 women were interviewed. Among them, 92.3% admitted attending antenatal clinic during their previous pregnancies while only 48.1% came early for their first check-up. About 70% of the women had history of home delivery and 44.2% had experienced at least one high risk pregnancy before. Study revealed that 44.2% (95% CI, 34.7 – 53.7%) of the women have good knowledge regarding antenatal care while 53.8% (95% CI, 44.3 – 63.1%) of them noted to have positive attitude regarding antenatal care. However, result showed that the level of knowledge regarding the importance of early antenatal care, screening test and complications of diabetes and hypertension in pregnancy were poor. In conclusion, the rate of home delivery and late antenatal booking was still high among the Orang Asli women and it is significantly associated with their attitude regarding antenatal care.

Floods is one of the most common natural disaster which causes heavy damage to properties and human well-being. Usually, the terrain characteristics and meteorological properties of the region were the main natural factors for this disaster. In this paper, Kelantan was selected as the case study for flood risk analysis in studying the flash flood occurrence in December 2014. Geographical Information System (GIS) analysis were used to evaluate the potential flood risk areas. Some of the causative factors for flooding in watershed are taken into account such as maximum rainfall per six (6) hours and terrain. At the end of the study, a map of flood risk areas was generated and validated. 1. Introduction The advent of Geographic Information System (GIS) has been given more consideration and useful detail on the mapping of land use/ cover for the improvement of site selection and survey data designed for urban planning, agriculture, and industrial layout.

  • Mental Health and Trauma Counselling Module As Strategy to Enhance Counsellors’ Competency in Handling Trauma Cases Caused by Flood Calamity
International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences 2017, Vol. 7, No. 3 ISSN: 2222-6990 Mental Health and Trauma Counselling Module as Strategy to Enhance Counsellors’ Competency in Handling Trauma Cases Caused by Flood Calamity Mohammad Nasir Bistamam1, Samsiah Mohd Jais2*, Nurul Hasyimah Mat Rani3, Mohammad Aziz Shah Mohamed Arip4, Noraini Ismail5, Muhammad Bazlan Mustafa6 Faculty of Education and Human Development, Sultan Idris Education University, Malaysia DOI: 10.6007/IJARBSS/v7-i3/2750 URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.6007/IJARBSS/v7-i3/2750 Abstract Bera and Temerloh are two districts in Pahang with the worst flood calamity recorded within the country towards the end of 2014 and early 2015. This calamity has destroyed not only properties, but also deeply affected the victims psychologically especially the students. Some of the victims show symptoms of crisis and trauma in short terms and long terms which are affecting the wellbeing of their lives. These victims might suffer Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) if their symptoms of crisis and trauma are not treated accordingly. As such, the presence of counselling teachers competent in mental health and trauma counselling are essential in such critical moment. However, most counselling teachers are not well-trained particularly in handling mental health counselling in order to help the victims. There are four main objectives of the Knowledge Transfer Program (KTP): i) to develop human capital among the Graduate Interns (GI) who would be competent in handling and transferring the mental health and trauma counselling knowledge; ii) to enhance knowledge and competency level of the counselling teachers in managing mental health and trauma counselling; iii) to increase support, coping skills and resilience of the community to bounce back and recover from the symptoms of crisis and trauma caused by the flood; and iv) to acquire recognition to the academicians as experts in mental health and trauma counselling through the Mental Health and Trauma Counselling module (MHTC).
