PȱɄɂȹȳȻ PȱɂȹɃȸ One Heart Lent Program This Lent, you are invited to participate in the One Heart Lent Program, an effort to help feed hungry people through our Cor Unum Meal Center. The One Heart Lent Program offers this daily guide for Lenten reflections, as well as a unique opportunity to help feed some of our neediest brothers and sisters through our Lenten almsgiv- ing. LENT Lent, the period of weeks leading up to Holy Week and Easter, is a unique gift from God. During Lent, we are in- vited to renew our relationships with God, turn away from sin, and experience reconciliation with God and others. We traditionally embrace three disciplines during Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. None of these is an end in itself. Instead, each discipline helps us better focus on God and on living God’s love. PRAYER The goal of Lenten prayer is to dedicate more of ourselves to building our relationships with God. To make best use of the One Heart Lent Program, you are invited to set aside some period of time each day during Lent (perhaps half an hour) to communicate with God through reflective prayer. Each day, you are invited to read in your bible the Gospel passage listed, and then to consider the reflections and questions for the day. If possible, it is very helpful to make notes after your reflections each day. FASTING Through fasting, we recall that God gives us all the gifts we have in life M not just food, but also breath, health, speech, thought, love, and every material good. By choosing to deny ourselves some food and drink during Lent, we gain a better perspective on all of the material blessings God gives to us. In addition to observing the Church’s Lenten regulations for fasting (Ash Wednesday and Good Friday) and abstinence (from meat on Fridays), each of us chooses particular ways to fast during Lent. ALMSGIVING Almsgiving is our sharing the best of our treasure with people who are in need. All that we are and all that we have are gifts from God. It is tempting to grasp those gifts for ourselves, without considering God or other people. When we sacrifice the best of our gifts for people in need, we become better focused on God and others. We grow closer to God and all of our brothers and sisters by living God’s generous love. The One Heart Lent Program is a fantastic focus for Lenten almsgiving. The One Heart Lent Program raises money to help feed hungry people in Lawrence through our Cor Unum Meal Center. Cor Unum serves meals to hundreds of people every day, 365 days a year. 100% of the alms you contribute to the One Heart Lent Pro- gram will help provide food through Cor Unum. One Heart Lent Program information sheets with Lent Jar wrappers are available in the welcome centers at the exits of the church. To participate in the One Heart Lent Program, all you need is an open heart, the desire to grow in the Lord, and a jar. LȱɇɂȵȾȳȵ, Mȱ ASH WEDNESDAY Our schedule for Masses, with the distribution of ashes, for Ash Wednesday, February 26, is: 7:00 am English 8:30 am English (Lawrence Catholic Academy Mass) 5:30 pm English 7:00 pm Spanish STEWARDSHIP Today’s readings challenge us to reflect on the true state of our hearts as it relates to stewardship. Do we choose to embrace stewardship as a spirituality and way of life that allows us to grow in conformity to Christ every day? Our first reading, from the book of Sirach, teaches that our good God has given us freedom to make this choice: “Before man are life and death, good and evil, whichever he chooses shall be given him.” The concept of stew- ardship helps us to live out the fundamental choice to put God first. Stewardship is meant to be embraced as a way of life a life that involves a continuous conversion of heart. In our Gospel passage, from Matthew, Jesus illustrates the difference between an external observance of the law and a true conversion of heart, saying, “You have heard that it was said… you shall not kill… But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment.” Our Lord is asking us not only for exterior acts, but for a true change of heart. In stewardship terms, that means seeing everything as a gift from Him, to be used for His glory and the good of others. Meal Schedule: Breakfast daily from 6:00 am M 8:00 am and dinner daily from 4:30 pm M 6:30 pm. BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING According to Web MD, high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a major health problem. High blood pressure is especially concerning, because people can have it for years without knowing. There is plenty that can be done to prevent, delay, and treat the condition. The first step is finding out that you have high blood pressure. Blood pressure screening will take place in the parish center on Saturday, February 22, 2020 from 1:003:00 pm. The process is simple. A parish volunteer who is a registered nurse will take your blood pressure and give you a card to document the reading. You can then discuss the results with your physician. The service is free and the results are confidential. Please plan to stop by the parish center to have your blood pressure checked on February 22nd.Note for your Calendar: Blood Pressure Screening will also take place on May 16, 2020. We ask that the County exempt and/or delay implementation of any changes to Chapters 22.33 and 22.63 as to the city-centered corridor streams, including Sleepy Hollow. The SHHA supports implementation of the proposed amendments to the San Geronimo Valley, to protect wildlife habitat in streams where Coho Salmon currently exist. The SHHA supports regulations to ensure the health and survival of the species in these areas. The SHHA recognizes the urgency of this matter to the San Geronimo Valley, both for the survival of the endangered and declining Coho population and for the property rights of the affected residents who are currently subject to a building moratorium.

  • The Expression of Sacred Space in Temple Mythology
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Unisa Institutional Repository EXPRESSONS OF SACRED SPACE: TEMPLE ARCHITECTURE IN THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST by Martin J Palmer submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Literature and Philosophy in the subject Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA Promoter: Prof. P S Vermaak February 2012 ii ABSTRACT The objective of this thesis is to identify, isolate, and expound the concepts of sacred space and its ancillary doctrines and to show how they were expressed in ancient temple architecture and ritual. The fundamental concept of sacred space defined the nature of the holiness that pervaded the temple. The idea of sacred space included the ancient view of the temple as a mountain. Other subsets of the basic notion of sacred space include the role of the creation story in temple ritual, its status as an image of a heavenly temple and its location on the axis mundi, the temple as the site of the hieros gamos, the substantial role of the temple regarding kingship and coronation rites, the temple as a symbol of the Tree of Life, and the role played by water as a symbol of physical and spiritual blessings streaming forth from the temple. Temple ritual, architecture, and construction techniques expressed these concepts in various ways. These expressions, identified in the literary and archaeological records, were surprisingly consistent throughout the ancient Near East across large expanses of space and time. Under the general heading of Techniques of Construction and Decoration, this thesis examines the concept of the primordial mound and its application in temple architecture, the practice of foundation deposits, the purposes and functions of enclosure walls, principles of orientation, alignment, and measurement, and interior decorations.

Today we continue in our Verse by Verse series on the Book of Revelation In our first week we looked at Chapter 1 As John was praying on the Sabbath day in The Spirit and he has this vision of the Glorified Christ. most people believe it was around 95 AD when John wrote the book of Revelation IT WAS A TIME WHEN THE CHURCH WAS GOING THROUGH A LOT OF PERSECUTION As a matter of fact John mentions in chapter one Now lets take a look at the third letter written to the Church of PERGAMUM or some Bible translations calls it PERGAMUS. Either one is correct Remember The first letter, was written to Ephesus, and while they were strict with doctrine this was the church that left its first love. They lost the zeal and passion that once burned bright Jesus called them to repent or he would come and remove their candle stick. The second letter was written to Smyrna, and this was the persecuted church. Today we come to the third letter the third church on the mail route through ASiA Minor And this letter is written to a compromising church. THIS IS THE CHURCH THAT HAD ONE FOOT IN THE CHURCH AND ONE FOOT IN THE WORLD. THE CHURCH AS WE WILL SEE, WAS ONE FULL OF COMPROMISE Pergamum Pergos: A Tower —— Gamos: Marriage Celebration Remember When We Started Teaching ON The 7 Letters to 7 Churches I shared with you that each letter to each church Not only was the letter written to an existing congregation with real strengths & weaknesses But when you closely examine the letters they also represent 7 time periods from the day of Pentecost until the final hours that we are now living in .
