Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in ,,

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. These two great Apostles are honored as the pillars of our church as it reached out in its infancy to both the Jewish and Gentile worlds! It is the annual feast in Vatican City when newly appointed Archbishops receive the “pallium” as a sign of their authority to teach, govern, and sanctify in union with the .

Given the timing of Fr. Arcadio’s departure, we will not likely see a replacement for him for at least six months and more likely not until next June, as the assignment transfer cycle was completed a few weeks ago. Fr. Dedert will be helping with the Filipino Masses and services during the summer, and I have already been in conversation with Fr. Ernie Tibay, our former parochial vicar and Archdiocesan Coordinator of the Filipino Apostolate, to make some other arrangements for the Fall. In the meantime, our remaining staff will divide up the responsibilities as moderators of the following: Msgr. Richard—Filipino Apostolate and Men’s Cornerstone; Fr. Ray—Lazarus Team, Ushers and Money Counters; Fr. Gustavo—Legion of Mary and Transfiguration Academy Grade 2; Fr. Jonathan—Altar Servers and Charismatic Prayer Group; Deacon Jim—Liturgy Committee and Social Concerns Committee. Of course, we count on the cooperation and support of leaders and members of these various groups.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

Saints Peter and Paul make an interesting pair. Peter, the impetuous one who acts first and reflects after, caught up as he is in his love for . Paul, the cerebral one who asks us to think through the implications of the love we have experienced in Christ. They represent not simply two different types of Christians, but two aspects of every Christian’s life.

The story of Peter at Caesarea Philippi shows him confessing faith in Jesus as Messiah, even though he does not yet fully grasp all that this means. He simply knows that, in his first - century Jewish context, this was the most exalted title he can give to Jesus. He does not yet grasp that this will mean that Jesus must suffer and die and be raised again, but time and trials will teach Peter the full meaning of the faith that he has so boldly confessed, the faith upon which the Church will be built.

While the reading presents Peter at the beginning of his life as a follower of Jesus, our second reading presents Paul near the end of his life. He reflects on how his life has been poured out for the sake of the gospel, and how God has stood by him and given him strength. Unlike Peter’s impetuous profession of faith, Paul’s is one that arises from considered reflection on the path on which God has led him throughout his life. But the faith he expresses is the same as that of Peter: Jesus is the fulfillment of human longing, the anointed one who will lead us into God’s kingdom.

“In the waters of Baptism, Holy Spirit, I was sealed with your fire and love to spread the Good News of salvation in Christ. Strengthen me, as you strengthened Saints Peter and Paul, for this grace-filled mission. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

Stewardship is not an easy life style. No one promised that it would be. It is counter-cultural to most things in the world today. However, putting God first in all things, living a life of gratitude and being generous with our time, talent and treasure brings tremendous joy to those who are disciplined. Fight the good fight and keep the faith!

The Question: Are we gambling with our Children’s Futures? Under Federal guidelines, schools and districts could adopt one of four strategies to qualify for funds. Still, some educators note that there is no research proving the effectiveness of any of these approaches. “So they’re “placing a large bet on an unproven approach,” says Grover Russ Whitehurst, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and Director of the Brown Center on Education Policy “if you can get rid of the worst schools and put into their place better schools, that’s good. But we don’t know how to do that.” - (excerpt from Christian Science Monitor Article) YES WE DO! The Answer: Transfiguration Academy Academic Awards: * Bergen Catholic High School Brady Memorial Academic Challenge * Joseph Regional High School Academic Olympics * Queen of Peace Adademic Challenge Future City Engineering Competition * 4 Top Ten Finishes and 12 Awards overall in our eight years of competion.
