Davies, Co-Chair Keyboard instruments are ubiquitous in the history of European music. Despite the centrality of keyboards to everyday music making, their influence over the ways in which musicians have conceptualized music and, consequently, the music that they have created has received little attention. This dissertation explores how keyboard playing fits into revolutionary developments in music around 1600 – a period which roughly coincided with the emergence of the keyboard as the multipurpose instrument that has served musicians ever since. During the sixteenth century, keyboard playing became an increasingly common mode of experiencing polyphonic music, challenging the longstanding status of ensemble singing as the paradigmatic vehicle for the art of counterpoint – and ultimately replacing it in the eighteenth century. The competing paradigms differed radically: whereas ensemble singing comprised a group of musicians using their bodies as instruments, keyboard playing involved a lone musician operating a machine with her hands.

Just in the Jesuitical play “Eumelio” (1606) the hellish characters are definitely comical; a year later, in the celebrated “Orfeo” by Striggio jr. and Monteverdi, we think to find droll, if not grotesque, elements. The article ends considering the opera “La morte d’Orfeo” by S. Landi (1619), particularly focusing on the character of Charon. Key Words: Tragicomic, Melodrama, Orpheus’ myth. INTRODUCTION An excellent scholar as Gloria Staffieri, in a recent historical frame of Melodrama from its birth up to Metastasio, reaffirms a widespread statement: the “invention” of tragicomic blend in the Opera is due to Rospigliosi, during the Barberini age [1], starting from 1629 (Sant’Alessio) and developing increasingly during the Thirties [2]. A quite late birth, therefore, of the tragicomic element, which is universally considered one of the most identitarian – strongly peculiar – feature of Baroque Melodrama [3]. In our short speech, we would demonstrate that this fundamental trait of Operatic mood was born at the very inception of the genre itself. Rinuccini If we skip now the case of Dafne [4] (where Rinuccini puts himself in line with the experiment of satira scenica by Giraldi Cinzio, the Egle [5], with its sad metamorphic ending), we may consider Euridice as a happy ending tragedy.

My comparative analysis of Missa Papae Marcelli includes discussion about the historical significance of Palestrina’s contribution to church music reform with regard to Marcello Cervini’s reforms in church doctrine. The compositional techniques and adherence to clarity of text are important aspects of Palestrina’s music that have earned him the title “savior” of polyphonic music. The comparative analysis will begin with a detailed study of Palestrina’s compositional method including an examination of voice leading, text setting, and cadence types. These compositional techniques will be compared to Anerio’s 1619 adaptation of the Palestrina model. An examination of Anerio’s adaptation illustrates how changes in composition shift from a contrapuntal design with elided phrases to a harmonic design with regular phrase structures. Adaptive techniques include both borrowed and newly composed material. Borrowed material includes introductory statements and closing gestures; however, much of the body of each movement is altered and shortened.

    DR ROBIN ROLFHAMRE Embellishing lute music: Using the Renaissance Italian passaggi practice as a model and pedagogical tool for an increased improvisation vocabulary in the French Baroque style Introduction Early seventeenth century lute improvisation — a phrase that by its mere utterance may cause debates full of uncertainties, fears and fantasies. What is proper improvisation? How did they do it 360 years ago? Even, how can we research what is non-existent, that is, not recorded, not clearly written down or captured by any other means? The dis- course of historic improvisation practices clearly gives rise to many problems and it is a complex subject to treat. An understanding of improvisation practice, no matter what period of time the scholar or performer seeks to address, must be bound to a thorough understanding of cultural practice and musical ideologies, an understanding reaching a level of artistic expression not possible without actually being there learning from the masters. It concerns a level of musical expertise that is very diffi cult to explain in writ- ing. How, then, can we teach the student, or even ourselves, to improvise in the styles of Early Modern music? In this article I seek to revive a systematic practice of teaching ornamentation and improvisation from the Renaissance scholars — that is, the passaggi practice — and adopt it to function as a methodology for Baroque music. This is done in order to present a practice that can be used in tuition, to have new generations of musicians improvise in a comfortable manner using a broad vocabulary. Before any discussion on sources can be presented, however, we must acknowledge some key features to consider during a study of this character.

This work was the direct model for Seelewig (text by Rose Hill Campus Bronx Georg Philipp Harsdörffer, music by Sigmund Theophilus Staden, Nuremberg, 1644), New York 10458 the earliest fully extant German opera.2 Seelewig appears in the fourth volume of Harsdörffer’s Frauenzimmer Gesprächspiele (1644) (literally, “Ladies’ Conversation Games”), an eight-volume discourse among fictional members of Nuremberg’s noble and patrician literati on a wide variety of topics.3 The Gesprächspiele crystallizes in idealized form the sorts of discussions that [email protected] took place in Germany’s literary societies, including Nuremberg’s Blumenorden an der Pegnitz (Pascal 1968: 73), which Harsdörffer founded in 1644 with Johann Klaj. Despite Seelewig’s origins in the didactic Gesprächspiele — a publication that Michael Spitzer calls ‘a pedagogical regime dressed up as a humanistic parlor game’ (Spitzer 2004: 164) — the opera was clearly conceived as a work to be performed, and not just as a www.jmro.org.au theoretical manifesto.

Jensen, 2015 Introduction Anthology of 17th-Century Italian Instrumental Music General Introduction Rationale and Scope of the Anthology The period ca. 1600–1700 witnessed the emergence and development of a new type of instrumental music for one to three instruments with and without basso continuo. This new repertory employed a variety of often interchangeable names: sonata, canzona, sinfonia, dances (“da camera” and “da ballo”), sometimes forming suites. It is the scope of this anthology to reflect the richness and diversity of this repertory, which encompasses works by well-known composers such as Rossi, Marini, Castello, Frescobaldi, Fontana, Buonamente, Uccellini, Cazzati, Vitali, Legrenzi, Bononcini, and Corelli. Many of the works by these composers are now available in modern editions. Consequently, the anthology’s primary intention is to supplement these available works with lesser known or unknown compositions and composers. Editorial Procedures Clefs Clefs used in the transcriptions are the G2 clef, C3 clef when convenient for the viola register, C4 clef when convenient for cello, trombone, and bassoon, and the F4 clef. The anthology does not use a transposing G clef. The original clefs are given as incipits on prefatory staves. Barlines Generally, barlines are absent in the sources except for continuo parts, where they may occur, but often occasionally and irregularly. Therefore, regular barlines have been introduced editorially in accordance with the mensuration signs (time signatures) and following modern conventions, i.e., most often in and a whole-note barring is used.

One way in which they did this was by commissioning operas based on the lives of saints from the poet Giulio Rospigliosi (later Pope Clement IX), and papal musicians Stefano Landi and Virgilio Mazzocchi. Aside from the merit of providing an in-depth look at four of these little-known works, Sant’Alessio (1632, 1634), Santi Didimo e Teodora (1635), San Bonifatio (1638), and Sant’Eustachio (1643), this dissertation also discusses how these operas reveal changing ideas of faith, civic pride, death and salvation, education, and the role of women during the first half of the seventeenth century. The analysis of the music and the drama stems from studies of the surviving manuscript scores, libretti, payment records and letters about the first performances.
