No matter what your present status in the Catholic Church, No matter what your current family or marital situation, No matter what your past or present religious affiliation, No matter your personal history, age, background, race or color, No matter what your own self-image or esteem. Cardinal Sean is inviting parishes to take part in a fund-raising effort called In- spiring Hope, which involves contributing toward a num- ber of different and im- portant initiatives to further the work of Christ in our Boston area. For parishes Father George Evans that take part, most of the money raised stays in the parish, where it can be earmarked for essential dimensions of the parish’s Christian mission. Every parish has been asked to consider whether it will be part of this effort. Some of our neighboring parishes have already involved in Inspiriing Hope; others are not. Those who have taken part have nearly all experienced a good level of success in the campaign. We will be conducting a feasibility study to deter- mine whether or not it is advisable for us to take part. A sampling of our parish families will be con- tacted in the next week or so. Those contacted will be given an explanation of Inspiring Hope and will be asked whether it looks like a good project for our parish or not. If you are one of the contacted households, I ask you to give attention to the materials presented, think it over, and then offer your honest sense of what our parish should do. Note well that this is a feasibility study and not the actual Inspiring Hope campaign. Whether or not we become part of that is what the study will help us to discover. As I write this, I am aware of the good job our par- ish did with the capital campaign that was just a few years ago, the one that resulted in pointing the church and expanding the small adjacent parking lot.     Chapter 3 p Community Assets 200 Health of Boston 2016-2017 201 3 | Community Assets Community Assets Social determinants of health are socioeconomic, environmental, and social resources that lay the foundation for health during childhood and may have lasting effects through adulthood (1). The previous chapter presented data on socioeconomic determinants of health such as educational attainment, employment, income, and housing status and the association of these factors with specific health outcomes. This chapter will focus on community-level social determinants of health referred to as “community assets.” Broadly speaking, community assets are the collective resources that make it easier for people to make healthy choices. An asset-based approach recognizes the importance of social, cultural, and physical resources that exist within the community (2). Community assets increase an individual’s opportunity to engage in activities that improve health and well- being (3). Anything that improves the quality of community life may be considered a community asset (4) including: • Community programs such as community gardens and farmer’s markets • Local businesses such as grocery stores and restaurants • Natural resources such as rivers, trees, and green space • Built environment such as parks, playgrounds, and walking paths • Neighborhood groups such as community advisory and crime watch groups • Municipal services such as police, fire, and recreation services • Public institutions such as schools, churches, and libraries • Resources promoting civic engagement such as call services for reporting non-emergency issues to local officials (e.g. Boston 311) Access to healthy foods, active living environments, opportunities that give individuals a voice in the political process, and good municipal services may contribute to the health of residents (5-10).

Improvements to slow the speed of vehicles in the major rotaries will also improve safety for all road users.     A HISTORY OF FOREST HILLS FOREST HILLS is the most complex area of Jamaica Plain.i Transformed by transportation over two centuries of time, Forest Hills challenges the definition of neighborhood. About a mile long and a half-mile across, Forest Hills has been shaped by geography more than any other part of Jamaica Plain. It sits in a valley at the confluence of two streams flanked by two hills on which have been landscaped two Boston landmarks and American institutions: The Arnold Arboretum and Forest Hills Cemetery. The hills that channeled the streams also channeled transportation routes beginning in 1806 with the Norfolk and Bristol Turnpike (today Washington Street). I. FOREST HILLS was for over a hundred and fifty years a crossroads in an obscure corner of Roxbury known as Canterbury. Three 17th century roadways converged in that valley – South Street (or the road leading out of the Dedham highway – today called Centre Street) along John Weld’s farm meandering along an irregular line into present day West Roxbury; Walnut Avenue, or the road to the Great Lotts wound its way through Roxbury highlands from Warren Street (the upper Road to Dorchester and Plymouth) at present-day Dudley Square; Walnut Avenue and South Street formed a crossroads about where the Arborway crosses South Street today. Coming off South Street a bit south of the crossroads was Walk Hill Street that ran to the Dorchester line at Harvard Street. At Forest Hills the traveler could go to Roxbury, Dedham or Dorchester. Walnut Avenue and South Street crossed over on wood plank bridges two steams that mark the valley.

    Commercial Casebook: Roslindale Village Historic Boston Incorporated, 2009-2011 Roslindale Village, Roslindale Introduction to District Located in the southwestern section of the City of Boston, the “village” of Roslindale is a commercial and residential area that today is described as being its own distinct neighborhood of Boston, although historically was part of Roxbury and West Roxbury. Generally speaking, Roslindale is located between the Forest Hills section of Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury and Hyde Park. The commercial center of Roslindale, alternately called Roslindale Square or Roslindale Village, features an intact assembly of early twentieth century one to two-story commercial buildings along the major thoroughfare of Washington Street, and the secondary South Street, Poplar Street, Birch Street and Corinth Street. The triangular Adams Park (1917) creates the visual center of the district. District Layout and Boundaries Roslindale Square sits southwest of Forest Hills, and is approached from the city on Washington Street. The commercial district is punctuated by Adam’s Park, a triangular green that forms a central focal point from which the rest of the commercial district radiates. The park is bounded by Washington Street, Poplar Street and South Street, all with commercial and municipal buildings that face onto park. To the west of the park are Birch and Corinth Streets, which Commercial Casebook: Roslindale Village Historic Boston Incorporated, 2009-2011 round out the rest of the commercial district and that feature attractive commercial buildings that are mostly vibrant and well-used. To the northeast, the commercial district abuts the commuter rail tracks, which run northeast to southwest creating a distinct physical boundary.
