The inventory did not include animals in captivity. Deer numbered more than 4,500,OOO. This male maneuvers with a limp on the affect leg. ***A female goat in the nursery area had a large severely bilaterally deformed udder. The licensee stated she had mastitis last year when she kidded and he treated her. The animal also had excessive hoof length on its rear hooves causing them to curve upward and crack. The veterinarian has still not examined this animal. Mastitis is a painful and uncomfortable condition and this animal has a malformed udder likely secondary to an inappropriately treated mastitis. ***An additional newborn fallow deer laying beside an adult fallow deer inside the rhino enclosure had a large round spot (approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inches round) on its head that was hairless and grey. ***A large male Watusi was observed tilting its head at an irregular angle.

FRAGOSO White-lipped peccaries (white-lips—Tayassu pecari) are among the largest of Neotropical forest mammals, reaching weights of about 50 kg (Sowls 1984; Fragoso 1998a). They can form groups with more than 100 animals, and anecdotal reports exist of groups with 1,000 and even 2,000 individuals (Mayer and Brandt 1982; May- er and Wetzel 1987; Fragoso 1994). Occasionally, herds and even entire populations have disappeared from areas where they were usually found, leading some re- searchers to hypothesize that white-lips are migratory, probably in response to vari- ations in food supply (e.g., Kiltie 1980; Kiltie and Terborgh 1983; Sowls 1984; Bod- mer 1990; Vickers 1991). This hypothesis has been supported by the stories of several Amerindian groups, who tell that local disappearances of white-lipped pec- caries are normal and that the herds return after a given time (e.g., Vickers 1991). Further support for the migratory hypothesis was provided by Kiltie (1980) and Kiltie and Terborgh (1983), who using a mathematical model based on step length and number of animals, demonstrated that a herd could cover an area of more than 200 km2.

McDonald Indiana State Museum, Department of Natural Resources, 202 N. Alabama Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204, and Department of Paleobiology, National Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C. 20560 ABSTRACT: Remains of at least six individuals of Harlan's muskox {Bootherium bombifrons = Symbos cavifrons) are reported from five Indiana localities. One partial male cranium was dis- covered in 1938 during water main construction in Muncie, Delaware County, but only recently has been acquired for the State Museum collection. Another partial male cranium was recovered in 1987 from a Madison County peat deposit. Sand and gravel pits in Clark and Gibson counties produced the only two portions of female skulls known from Indiana. Associated remains of two individuals, consisting of isolated teeth, podial elements, and fragments of various other elements were found deep within King Leo Pit Cave, Harrison County, approximately 77 m from an old entrance that is now closed. The microfauna associated with the King Leo muskoxen contains at least twenty-six taxa, including such northern species as the heather vole (Phenacomys intermedins) , southern red-backed vole {Clethrionomys gapperi), and fisher (Martes pennanti), and suggests the presence of boreal conifer forest interspersed with more open areas during deposition of the faunal remains in the cave. INTRODUCTION The number of late Pleistocene muskox fossils in Indiana is exceeded only by those of mastodons and mammoths, among the larger mammals.

Hence, the common name of javelina by which we know it today. Also described as the Mexico musk hog, the javelina or collared peccary (Tayassu [Pecari] tajacu) is only distantly related to true swine believed to have shared a common ancestor some 40 million years ago. The peccaries (Family Tayassuidae) were developing in the Western Hemisphere about the same time that swine (Family Suidae) were developing in the Eastern Hemisphere. The Javelina in Texas 2 diSTriBuTion The collared peccary has one of the largest distributions of any wild ungulate in the world, occurring from Argentina into the southwestern United States. Collared peccaries are relative new­ comers to the southwestern United States, with the first record in literature coming from 18th-century Jesuit missionaries in or around Arizona. Archeological investigations further substantiate this record, as no evidence of javelina has been found in sites dat­ ing prior to 1700.

The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting estimates that around 1.7 million animals have been killed by trophy hunters over the past decade, of which over 200,000 were endangered species. Lions are among those species that could be pushed to extinction by trophy hunting. An estimated 10,000 lions have been killed by ‘recreational’ hunters in the last decade. Latest estimates for the African lion population put numbers at around 20,000, with some saying they could be as low as 13,000. Industry groups like Safari Club International promote prizes which actively encourage hunters to kill huge numbers of endangered animals. The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting believes that trophy hunting is an aberration in a civilised society.
