Oaks (Quercus Spp.): a Brief History
Publication WSFNR-20-25A April 2020 Oaks (Quercus spp.): A Brief History Dr. Kim D. Coder, Professor of Tree Biology & Health Care / University Hill Fellow University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources Quercus (oak) is the largest tree genus in temperate and sub-tropical areas of the Northern Hemisphere with an extensive distribution. (Denk et.al. 2010) Oaks are the most dominant trees of North America both in species number and biomass. (Hipp et.al. 2018) The three North America oak groups (white, red / black, and golden-cup) represent roughly 60% (~255) of the ~435 species within the Quercus genus worldwide. (Hipp et.al. 2018; McVay et.al. 2017a) Oak group development over time helped determine current species, and can suggest relationships which foster hybridization. The red / black and white oaks developed during a warm phase in global climate at high latitudes in what today is the boreal forest zone. From this northern location, both oak groups spread together southward across the continent splitting into a large eastern United States pathway, and much smaller western and far western paths. Both species groups spread into the eastern United States, then southward, and continued into Mexico and Central America as far as Columbia. (Hipp et.al. 2018) Today, Mexico is considered the world center of oak diversity. (Hipp et.al. 2018) Figure 1 shows genus, sub-genus and sections of Quercus (oak). History of Oak Species Groups Oaks developed under much different climates and environments than today. By examining how oaks developed and diversified into small, closely related groups, the native set of Georgia oak species can be better appreciated and understood in how they are related, share gene sets, or hybridize. -
Symposium on the Gray Squirrel
SYMPOSIUM ON THE GRAY SQUIRREL INTRODUCTION This symposium is an innovation in the regional meetings of professional game and fish personnel. When I was asked to serve as chairman of the Technical Game Sessions of the 13th Annual Conference of the Southeastern Association of Game and Fish Commissioners this seemed to be an excellent opportunity to collect most of the people who have done some research on the gray squirrel to exchange information and ideas and to summarize some of this work for the benefit of game managers and other biologists. Many of these people were not from the southeast and surprisingly not one of the panel mem bers is presenting a general resume of one aspect of squirrel biology with which he is most familiar. The gray squirrel is also important in Great Britain but because it causes extensive damage to forests. Much work has been done over there by Monica Shorten (Mrs. Vizoso) and a symposium on the gray squirrel would not be complete without her presence. A grant from the National Science Foundation through the American Institute of Biological Sciences made it possible to bring Mrs. Vizoso here. It is hoped that this symposium will set a precedent for other symposia at future wildlife conferences. VAGN FLYGER. Wildlife Species
Wildlife Species This chapter contains information on species featured in each of the ecoregions. Species are grouped by Birds, Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians, and Fish. Species are listed alphabetically within each group. A general description, habitat requirements, and possible wildlife management practices are provided for each species. Wildlife management practices for a particular species may vary among ecoregions, so not all of the wildlife management practices listed for a species may be applicable for that species in all ecoregions. Refer to the WMP charts within a particular ecoregion to determine which practices are appropriate for species included in that ecoregion. The species descriptions contain all the information needed about a particular species for the WHEP contest. However, additional reading should be encouraged for participants that want more detailed information. Field guides to North American wildlife and fish are good sources for information and pictures of the species listed. There also are many Web sites available for wildlife species identification by sight and sound. Information from this section will be used in the Wildlife Challenge at the National Invitational. Participants should be familiar with the information presented within the species accounts for those species included within the ecoregions used at the Invitational. It is important to understand that when assessing habitat for a particular wildlife species and considering various WMPs for recommendation, current conditions should be evaluated. That is, WMPs should be recommended based on the current habitat conditions within the year. Also, it is important to realize the benefit of a WMP may not be realized soon. For example, trees or shrubs planted for mast may not provide cover or bear fruit for several years. -

Tree, evergreen, 1-trunked, in range to 12 m tall; monoecious; shoots with only cauline leaves, foliage ± glossy green and essentially glabrous, clustered near tips on twigs of short lateral branches; buds angular, on scales reddish hairy above midpoint. Stems: initially new growth with conspicuous projected ridges aging cylindric, young twigs with semicircular leaf scars and numerous small lenticels; on new growth having 5 vertical files of bud scale scars with to 10 scars in each file; bark tight. Leaves: helically alternate, 3-lobed above midpoint with a pair of rounded to obtuse lateral lobes (elongate rhombate), on twigs first leaves of a short lateral branchlet often unlobed, petiolate, with stipules; stipules 2, attached at node, linear-narrowly triangular to linear or narrowly oblong-linear, (2−)3.5−6 mm long, light tannish brown aging papery, flat, thickened at base, with principal veins raised on lower surface, pubescent with crooked arms < 0.5 mm long; petiole hemicylindric, to 5 mm long, ± pubescent with short stellate hairs; blade obovate in outline, (15−)50−95 × (9−)13−45 mm, tapered to long-tapered at base, lateral lobes widely spreading (crosslike), often somewhat wavy above midblade and lacking teeth or projections on margins, pinnately veined with conspicuous, elaborate vein network raised on upper surface and some principal veins somewhat raised on lower surface, on emerging leaves with short hairs along margins and lower midrib and appressed, purple-red fine hairs on lower surface (abscising) and white- tomentose tufts in axils of lateral veins, mature blade essentially without nonglandular hairs, upper surface with green tissue patches appearing slightly sunken, margin narrowly colorless, lower surface with inconspicuous, minute glandular hairs along side of midrib. -

THE TREES AT HISTORIC YATES MILL This one-way self guided trail will introduce the hiker to twenty of the numerous tree species found at Historic Yates Mill County Park. As you walk this .25 mile mod- erately easy trail, notice the numbered posts. These posts correspond to numbered tree pictures found inside the brochure along with numbers shown on the trail map. A brief description of the tree along with an interesting fact relating to each tree is given to spark your interest and curiosity. More detailed information about trees along with other natural and historical aspects of the park is available at the park office or from a park staff member. Please feel free to visit after your hike. Once you’ve completed the tree trail, please note you may return by using the same trail. You may take the .78 mile Upper Ridge Trail or you may wish to finish the 1 mile Mill Pond Trail. Whatever route you choose we hope you enjoy your visit to Historic Yates Mill County Park and hope you return again soon. If you choose not to keep this map and guide, please return it to the bro- chure rack so another visitor may enjoy the trail as you have. It lives in woods or forests that have a closed canopy, nut-bearing trees and plenty of cavity trees. As these mature forests have been destroyed in Illinois, the population of gray squirrels has declined. However, gray squirrels are common in cities. Here, they live in trees without the conditions described above. The gray squirrel eats buds, leaves, fruits, berries, fungi, pecans, acorns, hickory nuts, tree bark, walnuts and the seeds of various other trees. It stores nuts in holes in the ground. This squirrel grasps food in its front paws. It is primarily arboreal, and its large, bushy tail helps it balance while climbing and resting in trees. Urban squirrels are good at climbing brick walls and walking along wires and cables. The eastern gray squirrel does not hibernate and is active during the day year-round. It ILLINOIS RANGE may sleep for several consecutive days in winter, however. Its call is “kuk-kuk-cut-cut-cut.” This animal builds a leaf nest in the high branches of a tree but may use a tree cavity for escape from predators and poor weather and for raising its young. -

We conducted camera trap surveys in a mature upland hardwood forest of southern Illinois, USA during May to August 2015–2016 to document mammal summer habitat use in relation to forest structure and composition to further understand how regional shifts in forests may affect mammal communities. With nearly 4000 camera days of effort, we modeled occupancy patterns for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), raccoon (Procyon lotor), and eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus canadensis). Forest composition models outcompeted forest structure models for white-tailed deer, where we observed a statistically significant negative relationship between white-tailed deer habitat use and beech dominance. Further, we found a strong, positive association between deer and oak dominance.
