THE 22ND ANNUAL WASHINGTON, DC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL APRIL 24 – MAY 4, 2008 THE WASHINGTON, DC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL A world of films…a window into our world. Whether experienced in movie theaters, on DVDs or television in our homes, on our iPods or computers, films are the major communications media of our time. Hollywood films dominate commercial cinema. However, scores of talented filmmakers around the globe produce thou- sands of quality films that speak with a different voice, provide a different point of view, and tell different stories. Presenting these films in the nation’s capital is the purpose of Filmfest DC. Photo: Chad Evans Wyatt Film festivals are a journey of Tony Gittens, Festival Director and Shirin Ghareeb, Assistant Director discovery, a visual and thought provoking adventure into how people see and interpret our world. Every Filmfest DC is different and every film is unique from every other film in the festival. Together, they comprise an amazing representation of human imagination, commitment and talent. The festival has two special focuses this year — Politics & Film and New Latin Ameri- can Cinema. Obviously, politics are especially prominent during this election season and we wanted to explore the role affairs of state play in people’s every day lives. Latin American filmmakers are always a treasure trove of inventive storytelling. The di- verse selection of new work we have gathered from the Spanish-speaking world (in- cluding Spain) are moving, humorous, and insightful. None of this would be possible without the many dedicated people who have shared their time and talents with Filmfest DC.

  • Song, State, Sawa Music and Political Radio Between the US and Syria
Song, State, Sawa Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Beau Bothwell All rights reserved ABSTRACT Song, State, Sawa: Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell This dissertation is a study of popular music and state-controlled radio broadcasting in the Arabic-speaking world, focusing on Syria and the Syrian radioscape, and a set of American stations named Radio Sawa. I examine American and Syrian politically directed broadcasts as multi-faceted objects around which broadcasters and listeners often differ not only in goals, operating assumptions, and political beliefs, but also in how they fundamentally conceptualize the practice of listening to the radio. Beginning with the history of international broadcasting in the Middle East, I analyze the institutional theories under which music is employed as a tool of American and Syrian policy, the imagined youths to whom the musical messages are addressed, and the actual sonic content tasked with political persuasion. At the reception side of the broadcaster-listener interaction, this dissertation addresses the auditory practices, histories of radio, and theories of music through which listeners in the sonic environment of Damascus, Syria create locally relevant meaning out of music and radio. Drawing on theories of listening and communication developed in historical musicology and ethnomusicology, science and technology studies, and recent transnational ethnographic and media studies, as well as on theories of listening developed in the Arabic public discourse about popular music, my dissertation outlines the intersection of the hypothetical listeners defined by the US and Syrian governments in their efforts to use music for political ends, and the actual people who turn on the radio to hear the music.

Walsh had played with many bands but it wasn’t until 1969 when he joined the Cleveland based power trio, The James Gang that he got a taste of sweet success. The Gang released four albums in the early 70’s … two of which went gold. Joe then decided to head west to Colorado where he put together the trio, Barnstorm in 1972 and released two albums. Still feeling there was something more for him, Joe released his first solo album in 1974. So What proved Joe a legitimate solo act with a limitless career on the horizon. Then in 1976, he was asked by the Eagles to replace guitarist Bernie Leadon bringing a harder rock sound to the group. At the end of the year, they released their fifth studio album, Hotel California which went gold reaching #1 on the Billboard Charts followed by The Long Run (1979) and Eagles Live (1980) reaching Billboard’s #1 and #6 respectively. At the same time, Joe released two solo albums ...You Can’t Argue With a Sick Mind (1976) and But Seriously Folks (1978) which boasted the notorious hit, “Life’s Been Good”. During the 14-year hiatus of the Eagles, Joe focussed on his solo career releasing several albums including There Goes The Neighborhood (1981), The Confessor (1985) and Ordinary Average Guy (1991).

Global Metal Music and Culture This book defines the key ideas, scholarly debates, and research activities that have contributed to the formation of the international and interdisciplinary field of Metal Studies. Drawing on insights from a wide range of disciplines including popular music, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, philos- ophy, and ethics, this volume offers new and innovative research on metal musicology, global/local scenes studies, fandom, gender and metal identity, metal media, and commerce. Offering a wide-ranging focus on bands, scenes, periods, and sounds, contributors explore topics such as the riff-based song writing of classic heavy metal bands and their modern equivalents, and the musical-aesthetics of Grindcore, Doom and Drone metal, Death metal, and Progressive metal. They interrogate production technologies, sound engi- neering, album artwork and band promotion, logos and merchandising, t-shirt and jewelry design, and the social class and cultural identities of the fan communities that define the global metal music economy and subcul- tural scene. The volume explores how the new academic discipline of metal studies was formed, while also looking forward to the future of metal music and its relationship to metal scholarship and fandom. With an international range of contributors, this volume will appeal to scholars of popular music, cultural studies, social psychology and sociology, as well as those interested in metal communities around the world. Andy R. Brown is Senior Lecturer in Media Communications at Bath Spa University, UK. Karl Spracklen is Professor of Leisure Studies at Leeds Metropolitan Uni- versity, UK. Keith Kahn-Harris is honorary research fellow and associate lecturer at Birkbeck College, UK.
