Accepted 11-V-2001) Abstract: The mollusks in Manuel Antonio National Park on the central section of the Pacific coast of Costa Rica were studied along thirty-six transects done perpendicular to the shore, and by random sampling of subtidal environments, beaches and mangrove forest. Seventy-four species of mollusks belonging to three classes and 40 families were found: 63 gastropods, 9 bivalves and 2 chitons, during this study in 1995. Of these, 16 species were found only as empty shells (11) or inhabited by hermit crabs (5). Forty-eight species were found at only one locality. Half the species were found at one site, Puerto Escondido. The most diverse habitat was the low rocky intertidal zone. Nodilittorina modesta was present in 34 transects and Nerita scabricosta in 30. Nodilittorina aspera had the highest density of mollusks in the transects. Only four transects did not clustered into the four main groups. The species composition of one cluster of transects is associated with a boulder substrate, while another cluster of transects associates with site. -

The family is divided into four subfamilies. Two new subfamilîes are introduced as Prionovolvinae nov. and Aclyvolvinae nov. MOTIVO DE LA PROPUESTA La investigación documental que se condujo sobre la especie de coral P. inflata, evidenció el riesgo que tiene esta especie de desaparecer del territorio nacional. Abstract: Isla del Coco (also known as Cocos Island) is an oceanic island in the Eastern Tropical Pacific; it is part of the largest national park of Costa Rica and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island has been visited since the 16th Century due to its abundance of freshwater and wood. Marine biodiversity studies of the island started in the late 19th Century, with an intense period of research in the 1930’s, and again from the mid 1990’s to the present. The information is scattered and, in some cases, in old publications that are difficult to access. Here I have compiled published records of the marine organisms of the island. At least 1688 species are recorded, with the gastropods (383 species), bony fishes (354 spp.) and crustaceans (at least 263 spp.) being the most species-rich groups; 45 species are endemic to Isla del Coco National Park (2.7% of the total). The number of species per kilometer of coastline and by square kilometer of seabed shallower than 200m deep are the highest recorded in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Although the marine biodiversity of Isla del Coco is relatively well known, there are regions that need more exploration, for example, the south side, the pelagic environments, and deeper waters. -

Rehder Research Curator, Division of Mollusks Introduction An outstanding patroness of the arts and sciences in eighteenth- century England was Lady Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, Duchess of Portland, wife of William, Second Duke of Portland. At Bulstrode in Buckinghamshire, magnificent summer residence of the Dukes of Portland, and in her London house in Whitehall, Lady Margaret— widow for the last 23 years of her life— entertained gentlemen in- terested in her extensive collection of natural history and objets d'art. Among these visitors were Sir Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, pupil of Linnaeus. As her own particular interest was in conchology, she received from both of these men many specimens of shells gathered on Captain Cook's voyages. Apparently Solander spent considerable time working on the conchological collection, for his manuscript on descriptions of new shells was based largely on the "Portland Museum." When Lady Margaret died in 1785, her "Museum" was sold at auction. The task of preparing the collection for sale and compiling the sales catalogue fell to the Reverend John Lightfoot (1735-1788). For many years librarian and chaplain to the Duchess and scientif- 1 2 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM vol. 121 ically inclined with a special leaning toward botany and conchology, he was well acquainted with the collection. It is not surprising he went to considerable trouble to give names and figure references to so many of the mollusks and other invertebrates that he listed. -

Es poco el conocimiento existente sobre los efectos de los invertebrados sobre los arrecifes del Pacífico colombiano, es por esto que el objetivo de la Lpresente investigación fue determinar la densidad y tasa de coralivoría de Jenneria pustulata en los arrecifes La Azufrada y Playa Blanca (Isla Gorgona, Colombia). Los caracoles se buscaron y colectaron activamente bajo colonias coralinas, siendo medidos para determinar su estructura de tallas para cada arrecife. A nivel mundial existen aproximadamente 1400 especies de pepinos de mar (Pawson 2007), de los cuales en la actualidad 66 especies están siendo explotadas (Toral-Granda et al. 2008, Purcell et al. 2012, 2013). Costa Rica posee un total de 80 especies, lo que representa un 5.7% de la diversidad mundial del grupo. A nivel nacional, la costa Pacífica es la más diversa con 28 especies, seguida por la Isla del Coco (26 especies) y por último la costa Caribe con tan solo 4 especies (Alvarado et al. 2013). Los pepinos de mar son organismos bentónicos, móviles, que consumen sedimentos y partículas en suspensión. A través de esta actividad alimenticia los pepinos de mar procesan el sedimento en el fondo marino, con una eficiencia muy alta, que produce que este al ser defecado sea rico en materia orgánica, la cual es utilizada por otros organismos para su alimentación (Birkeland 1989). -

New molecular data of Caribbean and a single Atlantic species were combined with comparable data of Indo-Pacific Ovulidae and a single East-Pacific species from GenBank. Based on two DNA markers, viz. COI and 16S, the phylogenetic relationships among all ovulid spe- cies of which these data are available are reconstructed. The provisional results suggest a dichotomy between the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific taxa. Fully grownSimnialena uniplicata closely resembles juvenile Cyphoma gibbosum conchologically. Cymbovula acicularis and C. bahamaensis might be synonyms. The assignments of Caribbean host species for Cyphoma gibbosum, C. signatum, Cymbovula acicularis and Simnialena uniplicata are revised. As far as known, most occur associated with octocorals (Anthozoa: Octocorallia: Alcyonacea), but in both the Caribbean and the Indo-Pacific some ovulid species feed on antipatharians (Anthozoa: Hexacorallia: Antipatharia) (Tazioli et al., 2007). The species of Pedicularia Swainson, 1840, that have been classified with the Ovulidae for a long time (Goud and Hoeksema, 2001), live on stylasterid corals (Hydrozoa: Athecatae: Filefera). -

Project Background Wolf and Darwin islands form a distinct and isolated biogeographic zone in the Galapagos Islands that supports a high level of biodiversity, including priority conservation endemic corals and associated species, subject to extreme ‘natural’ climatic and anthropogenic pressures. The extreme climatic fluctuations under El Niño events in the region are particularly damaging for coral populations - extensive coral reefs were reduced by 97% in 1982-83 and further compounded to 99% losses in 1997-98. Subsequent surveys show that Wolf and Darwin harbour >95% of the coral species now found in the Galapagos Marine Reserve (GMR) including rare corals (e.g. Leptoseris sp.) that may well become locally and indeed globally extinct, and demand special attention to their conservation. Although Galapagos coral research 1 Annual Report template with notes 2007 has been carried out previously, this project constitutes the most comprehensive study using innovative mapping techniques undertaken to date in the remote northern islands.
