The new mar- ket economies have fundamentally changed; their trades have been reoriented and are now catching up. At the same time the Nordic countries have gone through transitions of their own, necessitated by the financial crisis in the early 1990’s. Despite this, the competitiveness of the Region is losing ground. In order to turn this around, truly integrated markets can create renewed dynamism and economic growth. Particularly im- portant in this regard is a financial system that facilitates entry and exit of firms and the diversifying and sharing of risk. This session will specifically look at what it takes to establish a strong and competitive financial market with
