Teachers College. Therefore, this study mainly aimed to provide investors with new strategies in buying ETFs of the indices, which not only avoided the instability of individual stocks, but were also able to get a high profit within weeks. Famous theories like Gann theory and the Elliott wave theory suggest that as part of the nature, market regulations and economic activities of human beings shall conform to the laws of nature and the operation of the universe. They further refined only the rules related to specific timepoints and the time cycle rather than the traditional analysis of the complex economic and social factors, which is, to some extent, similar to what the Chinese traditional culture proposes: that every impact on and change in the human society is always attributable to changes in the nature. The study found that the turns of the stock indices trend were inevitable at Citation: Zhou, T.; Li, X.; Wang, P.

Origin and Customs of the Chinese New Year1 Haiwang Yuan, Professor from Western Kentucky University Guest Professor from CFL, Nankai University Author2 “What date is the Chinese New Year?” The Chinese ask themselves every year, but few can answer it off the top of their head. Believe it or not, they have to refer to the Chinese calendar to get the answer. The Chinese calendar is lunisolar, which means it shows elements of both the lunar and solar calendars. The Chinese use the Gregorian calendar to live their daily lives while using the Chinese lunar calendar to observe their traditional festivals and conduct their folk activities. Based on the moon’s revolution around the Earth, it is about 11 days shorter each year than the solar calendar.

A HISTORY OF READING IN LATE IMPERIAL CHINA, 1000-1800 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Li Yu, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Galal Walker, advisor Professor Mark Bender Professor Cynthia J. Brokaw ______________________________ Professor Patricia A. Sieber Advisor East Asian Languages and Literatures ABSTRACT This dissertation is a historical ethnographic study on the act of reading in late imperial China. Focusing on the practice and representation of reading, I present a mosaic of how reading was conceptualized, perceived, conducted, and transmitted from the tenth to the eighteenth centuries. My central argument is that reading, or dushu, was an indispensable component in the tapestry of cultural life and occupied a unique position in the landscape of social history in late imperial China. Reading is not merely a psychological act of individuals, but also a set of complicated social practices determined and conditioned by social conventions. The dissertation consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 discusses motivation, scope, methodology, and sources of the study. I introduce a dozen different Chinese terms related to the act of reading. Chapter 2 examines theories and practices of how children were taught to read. Focusing on four main pedagogical procedures, namely memorization, vocalization, punctuation, and explication, I argue that the loud chanting of texts and the constant anxiety of reciting were two of the most prominent themes that ran through both the descriptive and prescriptive discourses on the history of reading in late imperial ii China.

NEW MOBILITIES IN ASIA Kaufmann Change in China Post-Reform Rural-Urban Migration and Agro-Technological Lena Kaufmann Rural-Urban Migration and Agro-Technological Change in Post-Reform China Rural-Urban Migration and Agro-Technological Change in Post-Reform China New Mobilities in Asia In the 21st century, human mobility will increasingly have an Asian face. Migration from, to, and within Asia is not new, but it is undergoing profound transformations. Unskilled labour migration from the Philippines, China, India, Burma, Indonesia, and Central Asia to the West, the Gulf, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand continues apace. Yet industrialization in Bangladesh, Cambodia, and India, the opening of Burma, and urbanization in China is creating massive new flows of internal migration. China is fast becoming a magnet for international migration from Asia and beyond. Meanwhile, Asian students top study-abroad charts; Chinese and Indian managers and technicians are becoming a new mobile global elite as foreign investment from those countries grows; and Asian tourists are fast becoming the biggest travellers and the biggest spenders, both in their own countries and abroad. These new mobilities reflect profound transformations of Asian societies and their relationship to the world, impacting national identities and creating new migration policy regimes, modes of transnational politics, consumption practices, and ideas of modernity. This series brings together studies by historians, anthropologists, geographers, and political scientists that

  • The Concept of Environmental Sustainability in the Eight Trigrams and Sixty-Four Hexagrams Qing MING Yunnan Normal University, Kunming, Yunnan, China
2018 4th International Conference on Green Materials and Environmental Engineering (GMEE 2018) ISBN: 978-1-60595-592-6 The Concept of Environmental Sustainability in the Eight Trigrams and Sixty-four Hexagrams Qing MING Yunnan Normal University, Kunming, Yunnan, China Keywords: Eight trigrams, Sixty-four hexagrams, Environmental sustainability, The book of changes. Abstract. Environmental sustainability has been widely concerned by most countries in the world and has become an increasingly important world problem. This paper used hermeneutics as its research method and took the concept of environmental sustainability contained in Eight Trigrams and Sixty-four Hexagrams as its research object. The research would be carried out from four aspects: (1) the concept of “the Innate theory is the theory of mind,” (2) Sixty-four Hexagrams, (3) Eight Trigrams and (4) environmental sustainability. Introduction Eight Trigrams and Sixty-four Hexagrams are the backbone of Chinese traditional culture. They not only contributed to the existence and development of the Chinese nation, but also made outstanding contributions to the invention of the binary of the computer by the famous German mathematician, Leibniz (1646-1716). Today, environmental problems have seriously affected human survival; so far, no effective solution has been found. It is necessary for us to discuss the concept of building environmental sustainability contained in Eight Trigrams and Sixty-four Hexagrams. The Concept of “The Innate Theory Is the Theory of Mind” The Sixty-four Hexagrams in the Figure 1 and the Eight Trigrams in Figure 2 that have been discussed in the system of the philosophy of the Book of Changes are considered by scholars to be innate diagrams or xian tian diagrams (xiantian tu); the philosophy that developed from Innate Diagrams is called Innate Theory or xian tian theory (xian tian xue).
