Sonic Scope: New Approaches to Audiovisual Culture DIONYSUS DIES: An Autoethnographic Exploration of Tensions in the Anthropocene, Rejoicing in the Abject and Embracing the Perpetual Post-Digital Mess Galina Juritz Published on: Feb 15, 2021 License: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC-BY 4.0) DIONYSUS DIES: An Autoethnographic Exploration of Tensions in the Anthropocene, Rejoicing Sonic Scope: New Approaches to Audiovisual Culture in the Abject and Embracing the Perpetual Post-Digital Mess ABSTRACT DIONYSUS DIES: An Autoethnographic Exploration of Tensions in the Anthropocene, Rejoicing in the Abject and Embracing the Perpetual Post-Digital Mess Galina Juritz, Goldsmiths, University of London This commentary discusses the themes, influences and the process of making Dionysus Dies, a 30 minute musical film created during the initial months of the pandemic. The film is broadly situated in the remit of autoethnographic audiovisual research, and existing discourse on post digital aesthetics, collage, found material and music video, as ways to engage with various contemporary themes. Experimenting with non- linear narrative building, different musical genres and scales of media, I explore three sites for grief: technology, temporality and nature. I intend to work much of the music of the film into a standalone album in 2021. The research process has led me to explore further creative intersections between fact and fiction, with my upcoming PhD in 2021 looking at methodologies for distributed authorship within the music of documentary film. 0:00 Dionysus Dies You don’t know what you’re doing sometimes. Fair Play. Sabotage is bad. We don't like it, and we don't want it in the Hunt. Sabotaging teams or their Items can lead to immediate disqualification, and we may even loose the hounds of the Administration on you. 3. Contact with Judges. While we don't want to complain and say that Judges have it so tough, Scav Hunt is always teetering on the edge of sheer chaos, and if we can avoid it, we should. Thus, please only communicate with the Judges if you are going to do it in a professional manner. Generally, just remember that the more people shout, the less will be understood. JOURNAL OF CHILDHOOD STUDIES ARTICLES FROM RESEARCH Look at Us, We Have Anxiety: Youth, Memes, and the Power of Online Cultural Politics Julian Burton Julian Burton is a former teacher with a background in anthropology, media studies, and educational psychology and a recent graduate of the PhD program in childhood studies at Rutgers University–Camden. His work focuses on the intersection of young people’s participation rights and online culture, particularly the ways in which online communities enable flexible and informal politically relevant expression among youth. Along with his ongoing independent research, he works as a science and technology education consultant. Mit YouTube und ande- ren Videoplattformen hat dieses Format ein neues Gesicht erhalten. Bekannt als trocken, verstanden zur reinen Informationsvermittlung und gleichgesetzt mit den täglichen Nach- richten, hat es sich dennoch zu den Formaten mit viralem Potenzial entwickelt. Die Arbeit thematisiert die Struktur von Erklärstücken und ihre gestalterischen Merkmale. In zwei Fallbeispielen wird die Struktur analysiert und verglichen. Welches sind die Reize, die dieses alte Format wieder auffrischen? Diese Arbeit zeigt wie Personalisierung und Spannung in der Struktur neu verstanden und eingesetzt wird. I wanted my thesis to have an impact and planned on doing that by pointing out a glaring trend missed by the historical community. But, this was incredibly difficult so I came up with a thought experiment: If you randomly picked an American from 1990 (Person A) and made them talk to another randomly picked American from 2019 (Person B)—what would surprise Person A about Person B’s daily routine? The most likely answer is that Person A would be stunned by the domination of the internet and would be shocked at how dependent Person B is on it—professionally and personally. I was keen on using the term “information revolution” to describe this phenomenon, but that is not appropriate. The term has been in use since the 1970s to describe the rise of commercial computers and their ability to process and store unthinkable amounts of data. -
