On Dec. 4, President Jaime Paz Zamora formally convoked legislative and presidential elections for June 6, 1993. The new president will take office Aug. 6. To date, five presidential candidates are participating in the race: Hugo Banzer, representing the coalition of the Nationalist Democratic Action (Accion Democratica Nacionalista, ADN) party and the Revolutionary Left Movement (Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria, MIR); Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada, representing the Revolutionary Nationalist Movement (Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario, MNR); Carlos Palenque, representing the Conscience of the Homeland (Conciencia de Patria) party; Max Fernandez, representing the Solidarity Civic Union (Unidad Civica Solidaridad, UCS) and Antonio Aranibar, representing the Free Bolivia Movement (Movimiento Bolivia Libre, MBL).
