Tui Wikohika is a 14 year old snowboarder from NZ, who has dreams of making the NZ Olympic team in freestyle snowboarding. Tui's journey towards his dream has involved many hours of training, hard work and sacrifice. Tui's aspirations and vision for the sport has seen him working part time since he was at primary school and after training to help fund his travel to training camps and competitions around NZ.

Tui is currently ranked 2nd in NZ for U16 boys snowboarding after a successful nationals campaign. Tui aims to travel to Colorado and Canada over the 2019 NZ summer to train and compete in world class facilities against American and Canadian athletes.

This will help prepare Tui for a big NZ Winter season next year where he hopes to compete on the world junior rookie tour and all FIS sanctioned events. These events will give him a world ranking where he can track his progress against international riders.

Sports Breakfast

Ruapehu College’s sports breakfast was held last Friday in the school hall. This was an opportunity to celebrate all our sports at the college and to thank coaches and the families who give up their time to support our students. There were a number of certificates awarded to students who had achieved good results at regional competitions and students who had contributed positively to their games were also recognised. There was also a couple of citations for sporting excellence.

Students Hayley Artz and Dylan Budge, were awarded vouchers donated by Club and Kings for their contributions in promoting sports in our community and school. Mrs Fiona Fraser was acknowledge for managing the squash teams and received a voucher from The Powderhorn.

The guest speaker was Mr Mike Clamp, staff member at the College and former All Black 1984-85 who spoke about setting goals and how to do to achieve them. He spoke about the importance of both sporting and academic goals. Thank you to the volunteers who donated food and cooked the breakfast and to New World who generously supported the event.

The students stayed at the Nomads Backpackers which is within walking distance to the waterfront, Te Papa Museum and the Arena. After they booked in, they enjoyed a visit to Te Papa where the girls used their creativity and made paper monsters which we added to the lines with other creations. Thank you to Mrs Beukes, Mrs Higginson and the John and Sue School Grounds Laurenson Trust for their support. Our School grounds are looking very colourful at the moment.

New Fountain for the College

As Ruapehu College heads towards being a ‘water only’ school it was with great delight we received a new ‘frost free’ water fountain. Our local dentist, Mrs Jane Sherritt drove the initiative and organised funding from WPI Ernslaw for the purchase of the fountain.

Principal Mrs Basse was keen that it was placed near the netball and tennis courts so the community, who use these facilities can also benefit from the fountain. The fountain has the capability to fill water bottles as well as drink from it.

Thank you to Dr Ward at WPI Earnslaw and Dentist Mrs Sherritt for their contributions. Students head to the River

Mr Campbell’s physical education class planned an epic adventure as part of their study and NCEA assessments. They biked from Raetihi to then canoed 25 kms down the Wanganui River staying overnight at Matahiwi before coming out of the bush and biking home back up the hill!

“It was probably the most adventurous journey I have been on with a class.” said Mr Hart He was impressed with the students, their capabilities to keep going and their leadership skills.

Year 10 Design and Innovation Food

Year 10 food students are totally absorbed. This week we looked at 'appearance' as part of our 'Sensory Analysis' which is an integral part of Food Technology. We evaluate the food we make by taste, aroma, texture and appearance.

The brief for students was to make a chocolate cake and decorate it. This was only being evaluated by the visual appearance of the finished product. The students enjoy the freedom to be creative and competition always increases engagement.

Wendy Hubbard Retires

Mrs Wendy Hubbard retired at the end of the term after ten years of looking after the school Library at Ruapehu College. “I have really enjoyed my time at the College” she says “and have really enjoyed encouraging the students to read.”

Mrs Hubbard has noticed the changing times with her responsibilities shifting from managing books to monitoring the electronic chrome books. She has realised that the non-fiction section of the Library doesn’t get used as much as it used to. She still has a love of books though and has enjoyed buying fiction for the students who enjoy reading. She hopes to spend her retirement donating her time to the community.

Mrs Hubbard was thanked for her dedication to the job and her efficiency in organising the Library. We wish her well.
