news Executive Director Notes:

Thinking back to my first visit to Perkins Center in 1991, I recall feeling there was some - thing very special here, and I’ve come to learn that it’s the people I’m surrounded by who create this very special world. It’s a feeling that continues to be reinforced in the most unexpected ways. I recently received a phone call from Pete Bender, owner of Moorestown Hardware and lifetime resident of Moorestown. He informed me that his mother, Aurelia Bender, had recently passed away and that the wanted to donate her beloved Beckstein Grand Piano to Perkins Center for the Arts. I have fond memories of Aurelia. She was a beloved teacher in the Conservatory of at Perkins Center and she was a regular performer in the Chamber Concert Series for many years. After she retired from these duties, there were many days when she’d stop by Perkins Center and we’d be treated to an impromptu concert of classic tunes. Aurelia had been living at the Lutheran Crossings Enhanced Living Center and when board member and Con - servatory faculty member, Frank Staneck and I went to see the piano, we were greeted by Pete and family mem - bers. Frank sat at the piano and from the first cords he played, Frank had a rapt and attentive audience which quickly segued into requests for specific compositions by Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninov, composers whose music was played regularly by Aurelia. Later, when I asked Pete about this, he spoke about how “music reaches directly to the soul and that whenever this piano is played, there a little piece of Aurelia echoing through the air.” Pete mentioned how Aurelia used to refer to “speaking to people through her hands” and I got a real sense about how this piano had grown to become a real and important part of . Pete went on to say that the donation to Perkins Center was important because of Aurelia’s involvement, the high regard for the Center and to ensure that for years to come the memory of Aurelia would echo throughout the hallways at Perkins Center. As a gifted classical pianist and teacher Aurelia generously shared her musical talents with the Moorestown community for over 50 years by volunteering, performing and teaching. She shared and instilled her love of classi - cal piano with hundreds of students and fellow teachers who benefited from her warmth and sincerity. In 1967 she co-founded the South Jersey Music Teachers Association which thrives to this day. A lifelong student, she continued to hone her knowledge and skills by taking courses in piano theory at Temple University and even attended a music symposium in Italy when she was 76. Another brother, Bob Bender, teaches a painting class at Perkins Center. I asked Bob about Aurelia and he spoke about how much “she loved teaching and her commitment to musicianship and her intuitive, hands on approach to learning, an approach she used when giving a lesson to a student and in raising each of her ten children!” We thank Aurelia and the Bender family their generous donation to Perkins Center for the Arts.
