Sunday, January 3, 2016 Speaker: Pastor Dan Allen Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:16-20 Inviting our neighbours to real life with Jesus Christ-centred Teaching, Strategic Missions, Welcoming Environments, Developing Leaders He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Luke 24:44 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. John 20:30-31 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. Colossians 1:28 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— during the high- priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. Luke 3:1-2 After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Acts 18: 1-2a While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews of Corinth made a united attack on Paul and brought him to the place of judgment. Acts 18:12 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. Luke 19:10 Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up. For example, these are just the historical references. “The fifteenth year”, not the sixteenth, Tiberius, Pontius Pilate, governor, Judea, Herod, Tetrarch, Galilee, he was a “brother” not a sister, Philip, Tetrarch, Ituraea, Trachonitis, Lysanias, a title “Tetrarch of Abilene”, “the high priesthood” of Annas, of Caiaphas, John, the son of, Zacharias. There are twenty-two references, in just two verses, all confirmed by non-Biblical sources. You know after a while you start getting the hint: “I can trust the Scriptures.” SUMMARY: Archaeology has confirmed so much of the detail of the New Testament as has historical literary sources which are totally apart from the New Testament.

Tiberius, the Emperor of Rome. Pontius Pilate, the Governor of Judea
VIPs The Second Sunday of Advent Luke 3:1-7 Tiberius, the Emperor of Rome. Pontius Pilate, the governor of Judea. Herod, the ruler of Galilee. Philip, ruler of Ituraea and Trachonitis. Lysanias, ruler of Abilene. Annas and Caiaphas, high priests of Jerusalem. If we’re honest, it’s hard to care about who was in charge of what in the ﬁrst century, especially when those names read like extraneous details—a kind of prelude to the rest of the story. To our brothers and sisters of the ﬁrst century, our indifference would have been nothing short of unfathomable. To them, those men are the story. As emperor, Tiberius is the one whom everyone worships, a sort of demigod of peace and prosperity. Pontius Pilate’s clout and authority stems from his world as the emperor’s envoy in Judea. Herod, Philip, and Lysanias are Pilate’s local emissaries, and therefore they are also held in high esteem. Lastly, Annas and Caiaphas are the ones to whom Jews in the region followed and trusted for matters spiritual and practical. Together, these 7 men are the ones everyone expects to be be inked into the annals of history and carved into the porticos of temples and marketplaces. That John the Baptist is the one we remember most today would have been nothing short of offensive to them. John doesn’t have the blue-blood lineage or socially esteemed position of the others. What he has is a reputation for endless bad hair days and dinners of dried, crusty bugs. On top of that, much of his adulthood has been spent in the barren and lifeless wilderness— a place of low expectations, A place most people avoid, a place where God often seems silent.

Lately we’ve heard a lot about fake news - things that are presented as facts, when in fact they are: facts out of context, or facts that are only part of the story, or speculation stated as fact, or a story crafted to confirm a false notion. Fake news is usually tailored to speak to an audience eager to believe it is true. Typical of deception, often the charge of fake news is fake itself - a deception. Knowing that Satan is the father of lies - I do not want to believe a news report just because it fits and confirms my worldview or opinion. If I do, Satan wins. Facts matter. If it is not factual, it didn’t happen. It is not real or true. Clinging to stories you like, but are not true, is self-deception, shaky ground Consider: What challenges did Luke address to help Theophilus? The Athenians considered the good news of the resurrection to be fake news. We face similar challenges from skeptics: . You don’t actually believe Jesus rose from the dead, do you? That doesn’t happen. Dead is dead! Or Jesus wasn’t really dead. And all those miracles and demon possessions - superstition and myth If we respond: Yes, by faith I believe these things happened. This chapter begins with: “In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar”. Here, Luke is giving us a general timeframe for the events that occurred. The best estimates set it anywhere from A.D. 27 to 29. Luke listed the political leaders of the region where Jesus lived to give us the timeframe and the political climate of the scene. Tiberius Caesar was an emperor known for his cruelty. Pontius Pilate was also renowned for his brutal massacres of the Jewish people in Judea, and his insensitivity towards the Jews. The rulers from the family of Herod the Great (Herod, Philip, and Lysanias) were also known for their corruption and cruelty. When Herod the Great died, he divided his kingdom among his three sons Herod, Philip, and Lysanias. Caiaphas and Annas were the religious leaders of Judea in the period of Jesus’ ministry. Caiaphas was the High Priest, but his father-in-law Annas (the patriarch of the family) was the real influence among the priestly class. 1. Gregory Bloomquist Saint Mark the Evangelist (Anglican) Church, Ottawa, ON Dec 10, 2006 Advent 2, Year C Three weeks ago I was in Washington DC. I was privileged to be there over the course of a Sunday so that I could attend services at the National Cathedral. The Cathedral is in a spectacular setting, and is itself spectacular, a huge Gothic structure. It is truly majestic. The Gospel for that Sunday was Mark 13.1-8. You perhaps remember that this Gospel begins Jesus' words on "the end". The Gospel starts off with Jesus coming out of the Temple in Jerusalem. His disciples comment, probably on the Temple itself: "Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!", to which Jesus responds "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down." As the vast crowd of worshippers stood there in the Cathedral, listening to the Gospel, we looked around at the beautiful building around us. Not surprisingly, the same thing must have been on the mind of the preacher, the Dean of the Cathedral, who began his sermon, in his gentle southern accent with the comment: "I have to say, this text makes me nervous." All in the congregation laughed, because of course this was the first thing on our minds as we had looked around at the "large stones" and "large buildings" of the Cathedral.
