SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSONS Commentary by Michael Sigler December 6, 2009 The Lineage of David Ruth 4:13-17 & Matthew 1:1-6 Key verse: “The women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, ‘A son has been born to Naomi.’ They named him Obed; he became the father of Jesse, the father of David” (Ruth 4:17). What parts of the Bible do you skip over? Most people rarely read the genealogies—“so-and-so begat so-and-so who begat so-and-so.” Granted, these passages might not offer the most exciting reading. But with just a little study, the genealogies of the Bible offer great spiritual treasures! This week’s lesson dips into the genealogy of Christ as presented in Matthew’s Gospel. The lesson also looks back to two ancient women of faith whose lives play an integral part in God’s great plan for humanity—Naomi and Ruth. Their story as told in the Book of Ruth is one of the most beautiful stories in the Bible. The story focuses on Naomi first, a Hebrew woman whose family has lost everything because of a famine. Trying to find a way to survive, Naomi, her husband and their two sons move to the nearby country of Moab. There the two sons find wives. But before long, bad times are back. Naomi’s husband and both of her sons die, leaving her with few prospects for support. Hearing that the famine in Judah has ended, Naomi decides to go home. The second part of the story focuses on Naomi’s daughter-in-law, Ruth. -

INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNITY GROUPS WHAT IS A COMMUNITY GROUP? Community groups are small gatherings of people (Christian and non) that meet regularly for friendship, accountability, study and prayer, laughter, and occasionally tears. Community groups are an essential expression of the mission of Mars Hill Church. They’re a place where we learn more about Jesus and life together. They’re the place where we wrestle with the truths of the Bible and encourage one another toward the life that God intends for us. Each community group is unique, shaped by its neighborhood and the people who attend. However, you can expect a weekly gathering in a residence that involves food, conversation, prayer, discussion for applying the Bible to practical living, and service in the neighborhood. At the heart of each community group is the desire to see an authentic community marked by love for Jesus, one another, and the neighborhood. WHY SHOULD I JOIN A COMMUNITY GROUP? The God of the Bible is a Trinitarian God who is one and three persons: Father, Son, and Spirit. God has made us in his image, which means we are made for community and friendship. And when we are not living in community we suffer because life in a sinful world is too complex and tempting to journey alone. Therefore, community groups are a place where we can live in relationship with one another through the ups and downs of life. HOW DO I GET CONNECTED TO A COMMUNITY GROUP? The easiest way to get connected is on Sunday: before or after the service, stop by the info desk at the campus where you attend. -

The Generations of Adam hat is the purpose of Bible chronology? According to Philip Mauro, in Wonders of Bible Chronology, “its basis is the Bible itself; its plan is the genealogical or life line that Wstretches from the first Adam to the last Adam ... and its purpose is to bring those who follow its progress to revelations of vital truth pertaining to God’s mighty work of redemption.” Genesis 5 reveals the time span between Adam and the worldwide flood of Noah’s time. First, the Bible is the only reliable source book that gives history with an exact chronology for the first 4000 years of the human race. It has been about 6000 years since the creation of man. For the first 3/5ths of this period, there is no chronological information whatever except in the Bible. The histories of other peoples give an account of their beginning vaguely and in the context of myths and fables. In contrast, the Bible is a very accurate historical document. -

I. Issa Dept. of English & Translation, Jadara University, PO box 733, Irbid, Jordan Abstract This study is devoted to discuss the renditions of the prophets' names in the Holy Quran due to the authority of the religious text where they reappear, the significance of the figures who carry them, the fact that they exist in many languages, and the fact that the Holy Quran addresses all mankind. The data are drawn from two translations of the Holy Quran by Ali (1964), and Al-Hilali and Khan (1993). It examines the renditions of the twenty five prophets' names with reference to translation strategies in this respect, showing that Ali confused the conveyance of six names whereas Al-Hilali and Khan confused the conveyance of four names. Discussion has been raised thereupon to present the correct rendition according to English dictionaries and encyclopedias in addition to versions of the Bible which add a historical perspective to the study. Introduction In Prophets’ names comprise a significant part of people's names which in turn constitutes a main subdivision of proper nouns which include in addition to people's names the names of countries, places, months, days, holidays etc. In terms of translation, many translators opt for transliterating proper names thinking that transliteration is a straightforward process depending on an idea deeply rooted in many people's minds that proper nouns are never translated or that the translation of proper names is as Vermes (2003:17) states "a simple automatic process of transference from one language to another." Zannoni Pre Note: On December 8, 2020, Pope Francis proclaimed in an Apostolic Letter entitled “Patris corde” (“With a Father’s Heart”) a “Year of Saint Joseph” from December 8, 2020, to December 8, 2021. Also, the Church celebrates the Solemnity (feast) of St. Joseph liturgically on March 19. Thus, the following reflection is offered on Joseph's biblical roots, the spouse of Mary, the mother of Jesus. What the Gospels Reveal About St. Joseph The only source we have for St. Joseph is the gospels. He is mentioned sixteen times in three of the four gospels. Matthew mentions him eight times, Luke seven times, and John once. This singular reference to Joseph in John's gospel (6:41-42) only refers to Joseph as the father of Jesus. The Portrayal of Joseph in the Gospel of Matthew In Matthew's gospel's infancy narrative, the first time Joseph is mentioned is in the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:1-17), and he is called the husband of Mary (1:16). The second time Joseph is referred to as betrothed to Mary. They are engaged, “but before they lived together, she [Mary] was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit” (1:18). Mary and Joseph are between two stages of ancient Jewish marriage. The first is the formal consent in the home of the father of the bride. The second, made later, is the transfer of the bride to the house of the groom. In the Jewish legal view, Mary and Joseph's betrothal was considered a legally contracted marriage, completed before they cohabitated. -

Davidic Descent and the Virgin Birth M. BLANCHARD Bishop Hollis' s question : ' How can Jesus be both born of the Virgin Mary and Son of David ? ' reminds one of that puzzling question with which Jesus confounded the Rulers of the Jews on that last day of controversy, the last Tuesday before His crucifixion: 'How can David's Lord be David's Son?' Both questions deal essentially with the same issue, and the same answer will be found fitted to both questions. If it be accepted that Mary was a descendant of David, the same as Joseph, immediately the problem is solved. But, that answer is rejected in the article which appeared in the April-June, 1959, issue of The Indian Journal of Theology. The evidence then for Mary's Davidic descent must be con sidered. No one questions the fact that Joseph's ancestry is traced back through David to Abraham in the first chapter of Matthew's Gospel. All agree likewise that Lukes list is radically different from Matthew's, and in inverse order. Matthew begins with Abraham and moves forward to Jesus; Luke begins with Jesus and traces the ancestry backward to Adam. On the face of it, their purposes seem to be different ; their methods, different ; and, we may suppose, the persons whose ancestries are traced, different. Basing their interpretation on the custom of Levirate marri age, attempts have been made along two lines to support the theory that both Matthew and Luke give the descljlnt of Joseph. First, some have suggested that the two men referred to, Jacob in Matthew and Heli in Luke, were step-brothers. -

The Christian Comforter Enoch the seventh from Adam In the book of Genesis, there are two Enoch’s; one from the line of Cain, in Genesis 4:17, and one from the line of Seth, who is the Enoch that we are concerned with here. The lineage is Adam — Seth — Enos — Cainan — Mahalaleel — Jared — Enoch. Enoch walked with God, and after 365 years God took him — he did not die. Genesis 5:23-24 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. This fact is expanded upon in Hebrews chapter 11 — among those who walked in faith. Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. Enoch is also found in the genealogy of Jesus. Luke 3:37 Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan. Note; above the names are spelt differently in the New Testament which was originally written in Greek. In the time of the early church fathers, the book of Enoch was widely accepted as inspired scripture by Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Athenagoras, Tertullian, Origen and Lactantius. They all referenced Enoch in their own writings, probably because of Jude’s reference that it was a prophetic text. Jude 1:14-15 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. -

Is the Bible Reliable? #3 (22 Historical References in Two Chapters - Luke) Archaeology has confirmed so much of the detail of the New Testament. Also historical, literary sources that are totally apart from the New Testament confirm the inner testimony. In the book of Luke, in the gospel of Luke, chapter 3:1-2 there are 22 historical references in just two verses that have been confirmed as accurate totally apart from the Scriptures. Let me read that passage. “Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the regions of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.” Now in just these two verses there are 22 historical references that have been confirmed by archaeology and historical literary sources. For example, these are just the historical references. “The fifteenth year”, not the sixteenth, Tiberius, Pontius Pilate, governor, Judea, Herod, Tetrarch, Galilee, he was a “brother” not a sister, Philip, Tetrarch, Ituraea, Trachonitis, Lysanias, a title “Tetrarch of Abilene”, “the high priesthood” of Annas, of Caiaphas, John, the son of, Zacharias. There are twenty-two references, in just two verses, all confirmed by non-Biblical sources. You know after a while you start getting the hint: “I can trust the Scriptures.” SUMMARY: Archaeology has confirmed so much of the detail of the New Testament as has historical literary sources which are totally apart from the New Testament. -
Rewritten Bible?
CHAPTER FOUR REWRITTEN BIBLE? Introduction Philo did not only interpret small biblical units, but gave compre hensive presentations of the Laws of Moses to such an extent that one might claim that he largely rewrote the Pentateuch in the set of treatises called the Exposition qf ehe Laws qf Moses. Does he here place himself within the wider context of Jewish expository traditions? It has been attempted to group such traditions into a genre. In bis definition of the 'rewritten Bib1e' genre Ph.S. Alexander states that its framework is an account of events, and so they may be described broadly as histories. This genre is different from theological treatises, though the account of events may serve theological ends. 1 Does Philo's Exposition agree with this criterion? Philo begins with the story of Creation. He writes the who1e treatise Opif. on Gen 1-3, using the biblical form of hexaemeron, and rewrites in biblica1 sequence the stories about the Garden, the Serpent, the Fall and its consequences. He follows the biblical order in AbT. 7-16 in his account of Enos, Enoch, Noah and the Deluge, and in AbT. 17- 276 on Abraham. Several events in the life of Abraham are recorded, his migration, his adventures in Egypt, the three angelic visitors, the destruction of the cities of the Plain, the sacrifice of Isaac, the settle ment of the dispute with Lot, his victory over the four kings, Sarah and Hagar, and Sarah's death. In Jos. 1 Philo refers back to Abraham, Isaac andJacob, and in Jos. 2-156 he deals with the story ofJoseph.2 Several events in Joseph's career are included in the treatise: Joseph's dream, bis being sold to merchants, who in turn sold bim to Potiphar. -

Is Jesus descended through the line of Solomon (Mt) or the line of Nathan (Lk)? Or both? 2. Are there 27 people from David to Jesus (Mt) or 42 (Lk)? 3. Who was Joseph’s father? Jacob (Mt) or Heli (Lk)? 4. What is the lineage of Shealtiel and Zerubbabel? a. Are they the same father-son pair in Mt as in Lk? (Apparently popular father-son names were repeated across families – as with Jacob and Joseph in Matthew’s genealogy) If not, then no problem. I will, for purposes of this discussion, assume that they are not the same father-son pair. b. If so, then there is another problem: i. Who was Shealtiel’s father? Jeconiah (Mt) or Neri (Lk)? ii. Who was Zerubbabel’s son? Abihud (Mt) or Rhesa (Lk)? And where are these two in the list of 1 Chronicles 3:19-20 ( 19b the sons of Zerubbabel were Meshullam and Hananiah, and Shelomith was their sister; 20 and Hashubah, Ohel, Berechiah, Hasadiah and Jushab-hesed, five)? Cultural Factors 1. Simple remarriage. It is likely that in most marriages, men were older and women were younger (e.g. Joseph and Mary). So it is also likely that when husbands died, many women remarried. This was true in ancient times: Boaz married the widow Ruth, David married the widow Bathsheba after Uriah was killed. It also seems likely to have been true in classical, 1 st century times: Paul (in Rom.7:1-3) suggests that this is at least somewhat common in the Jewish community (‘I speak to those under the Law’ he says) in the 1 st century. -

Edwards, Pastor Because of her profession, Rahab, a Canaanite woman, was always identified as a harlot. Because of her expressed faith in a forgiving and merciful God, Rahab became a heroine to her family, the first Gentile to be welcomed into God’s family, and one of the mothers in the lineage of Jesus. Even though she was a Gentile, the writer of Hebrews included Rahab in the Hebrew Hall of Faith; identifying her as the woman who did not perish, like those who were disobedient. Even though she worked as a prostitute, and lied to the king’s messengers, James, the half-brother of Jesus, said Rahab was “justified by her works when she received the messengers and sent them another way.” The reason the story of Rahab is in the Scriptures is to show us that God delights to display the glory of His grace, and the wonders of His love, to and through the least likely candidates. The New Testament lists two genealogies of Jesus. Luke 3:23-38 is the ascending record of Jesus’ family tree, beginning with the birth of Jesus to Mary, and then tracing His lineage back 77-generations to Adam. Luke wrote his genealogy of Jesus to prove His humanity. Matthew 1:1-17 is the descending record of Jesus’ family tree, beginning with Abraham and tracing his lineage forward 42-generations to Joseph.
