Animating Social Pathology: Ontology, Aesthetics, and Cartoon Alienation by Wolfgang Boehm Under the Direction of Professor Greg Smith ABSTRACT This thesis grounds an unstable ontology in animation’s industrial history and its plas- matic aesthetics, in-so-doing I find animation to be a site of rendering visible a particular con- frontation with an inability to properly rationalize, ossify, or otherwise delimit traditionally held boundaries of motility. Because of this inability, animation is privileged as a form to rethink our interactions with media technology, leading to utopian thought and bizarre, pathological behav- ior. I follow the ontological trend through animation studies, using Pixar’s WALL-E as a guide. I explore animation as an afterimage of social pathology, which stands in contrast to the more lu- dic thought of a figure such as Sergei Eisenstein, using Black Mirror’s “The Waldo Moment.” I look to two Cartoon Network shows as examples of potential alternatives to both the utopian and pathological of the preceding chapters.

For Exhibitors November 2, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 141 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising Just past 8pm on October, 30, 1938 Orson Welles delivered his famous deep-fake of the American public when CBS broadcast his radio adaptation of War of the Worlds. Based on the 1898 sci-fi novel by H.G. Welles, the main broadcast presented itself as a live report from New Jersey, where Martians had touched down to invade Earth. Some listeners mistook the broadcast as actual reporting on real events, prompting widespread panic. The next day, the 23-year old Welles spoke to reporters at a hastily arranged press-conference to explain that this outcome was entirely surprising and unintended. However, the attention also made Welles famous, establishing his reputation (Click to Play) as a gifted storyteller with the skill to convince audiences to suspend their disbelief in the incredible, one of the fundamental propositions of Hollywood filmmaking. “When they talked about that [Welles] was embarrassed by it, I don’t think so. If you look at that press conference, he’s so contrite, and he’s just acting his brains out, and he’s so clearly delighted.” - Director John Landis commenting on Welles speaking at the press conference after the 1938 broadcast. Kokeš Masaryk University Spiral, Slasher, and Sequel: Case of Happy Death Day (2017) and Happy Death Day 2U (2019) This article is going to focus on the films Happy Death Day (2017) and Hap- py Death Day 2U (2019). Both are movies from Blumhouse Productions. Both were directed by Christopher Landon. Both follow the same group of young characters confronted with a mysterious serial killer in a baby mask. Above all, both handle the spiral narrative. As I wrote elsewhere1, as such, we can recognise a specific storytelling pattern with a protagonist stuck in an iterative segment of space, time and causality – and this protagonist is not only fully aware of this situation but also tries to deal with it. What for other unaware characters is a closed loop is for the protagonist an open experience with an odd number of turns of time spiral. That is why I call it the spiral narrative, which is known mostly from high-budget films such as Groundhog Day (1993) or Edge Of Tomorrow (2014). Nevertheless, as will be explained, it occurs in dozens of other theatrical films, VOD films, television films or television shows. However, what are the reasons why, when there is an extensive set of works to choose from, do I take just the doublet of Happy Death Day films? (1) On their example, the article is going to discuss my general hypothesis about spiral narrative works as a series of applications of the innovative narrative schema as 1 See: Kokeš, 2018; Kokeš, forthcoming.
