TREES AS CROPS IN ALASKA PROFILE WITH AN EMPHASIS ON SPRUCE Revised 2009 Robert A. Wheeler Thomas R. Jahns Janice I. Chumley PRODUCTION FACTS Growing trees in Alaska can be difficult. This document addresses basic questions regarding growing tree seedlings as an agricultural crop. Whether growing a few seedlings or thousands, many of the basic production questions are the same. From the standpoint of tree seedling production there are three basic regions in Alaska: Southeast, South Central, and the Interior. Producing high quality tree seedlings is 4-H Tree Sale in Soldotna, AK May 2003 achievable in all three regions however care must (photo/Bob Wheeler). be taken to match tree species requirements with local environmental conditions. Through the efforts of the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the Agriculture and Forestry Experiment Station, many tree species have been evaluated over the past 100 years for their performance. Results from these species trials have led to the listing of tree species, growth characteristics, and site requirements found in Table 1. DEMAND Interest in tree production can vary from growing trees for your yard or property to full scale outdoor or greenhouse, bareroot, or container nurseries. Tree planting and tree sales continue to be of considerable interest to the public although there are no large-scale commercial tree nurseries currently operating in Alaska. A state tree nursery was once operated in the Matanuska Valley area, but it has been closed. Reasons for the closure were based upon the high cost of producing seedlings in Alaska versus what it would cost to import them from nurseries outside the state and also, the overall operational difficulties and risks associated with an Alaska nursery program. -

Forest Insect Conditions in the United States 1966
FOREST INSECT CONDITIONS IN THE UNITED STATES 1966 FOREST SERVICE ' U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE Foreword This report is the 18th annual account of the scope, severity, and trend of the more important forest insect infestations in the United States, and of the programs undertaken to check resulting damage and loss. It is compiled primarily for managers of public and private forest lands, but has become useful to students and others interested in outbreak trends and in the location and extent of pest populations. The report also makes possible n greater awareness of the insect prob lem and of losses to the timber resource. The opening section highlights the more important conditions Nationwide, and each section that pertains to a forest region is prefaced by its own brief summary. Under the Federal Forest Pest Control Act, a sharing by Federal and State Governments the costs of surveys and control is resulting in a stronger program of forest insect and disease detection and evaluation surveys on non-Federal lands. As more States avail themselves of this financial assistance from the Federal Government, damage and loss from forest insects will become less. The screening and testing of nonpersistent pesticides for use in suppressing forest defoliators continued in 1966. The carbamate insecticide Zectran in a pilot study of its effectiveness against the spruce budworm in Montana and Idaho appeared both successful and safe. More extensive 'tests are planned for 1967. Since only the smallest of the spray droplets reach the target, plans call for reducing the spray to a fine mist. The course of the fine spray, resulting from diffusion and atmospheric currents, will be tracked by lidar, a radar-laser combination. -

Serious or significant pests require strategic-level plans developed at a national level describing the overall aim and high-level objectives to be achieved, and setting out the response strategy for eradicating or containing outbreaks. 2. The UK Plant Health Risk Group (PHRG) has commissioned, following identification by the UK Plant Health Risk Register, pest-specific contingency plans for those pests which pose the greatest risk and require stakeholder consultation. 3. The purpose of these pest-specific contingency plans is to ensure a rapid and effective response to outbreaks of the pests or diseases described. They are designed to help government agencies anticipate, assess, prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from pest and disease outbreaks. 4. Contingency planning starts with the anticipation and assessment of potential threats, includes preparation and response, and finishes with recovery. Anticipate 5. Gathering information and intelligence about the pest, including surveillance and horizon scanning. Assess 6. Identifying concerns and preparing plans. 7. Setting outbreak management objectives Prepare 8. Ensuring staff and stakeholders are familiar with the pest. Response 9. Identifying the requirements for either containing or eradicating the pest or disease, including work to determine success. 10. The Defra Contingency Plan for Plant Health in England (in draft) gives details of the teams and organisations involved in pest and disease response in England, and their responsibilities and governance. Cahill' Distribution Western hemlock grows along the Pacific coast from the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska to northwestern California (fig. 1). Inland from the coast, it is found on the western slopes and upper eastern slopes of the Cascade Range of Washington and as far south in Oregon as the Siskiyou Mountains. Farther inland, western hemlock grows on the west side of the Continental Divide from just east of Prince George, British Columbia, south through north- em Idaho and northwestern Montana. About 80 percent of its distribution in the Rocky Mountains is in British Columbia. The fastest growing stands are found in &O the humid coastal regions of Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska, and on the lower slopes of the Cascade Range in Washington and . Oregon. In the Rocky Mountain region, dry summers limit western hemlock to primarily northerly slopes and moist creek bottoms. AN ANNOTATED LIST OF THE LEPIDOPTERA OF ALBERTA1.* Abstract This list consists of 1825 species and varieties of Lepidoptera which have been taken in Alberta. Of these, 657 are records of captures in the hitherto almost completely neglected Microlepidoptera. Though few specialists on this continent have studied the taxonomy of this large group, those who have done so in certain families have generously assisted in classifying the species which are recorded. Unfortunately, in a few families it has been ilnpossible to obtain this assistance. Despite the omissions this necessitates, the list constitutes the most comprehensive catalogue of Microlepidoptera which has, up to the present, been attempted for any province in the Donlinion. Arrangement and nomenclature are based on McDunnough's Check List of the Lepidoptera of Catzada alzd the United States, published in 1938 and 1939. Proposed modifications in nomenclature, presented in subsequent publications, are substituted if they appear to be gaining general acceptance. Locality records for captures are presented by a system of ecological areas of which the chief climatological and biological characteristics are briefly described. Introductory Professional entomologists are very greatly aided in the pursuit of their lifeworlc with its practical objectives by the unstinted and critical industry of competent amateurs.
