  • Transgender Inclusion in Single-Sex Competition: the Case of Beauty Pageants
Transgender Inclusion in Single-Sex Competition: The Case of Beauty Pageants Lauren Bialystok Abstract: Much ethical attention has been devoted to sex segregation and its relation to fairness in the world of sports, with prominent controversies about transgender and inter- sex athletes helping to advance the debate in recent years. In this paper, I deploy some of the discussion from philosophy of sport to examine the fairness of allowing a trans woman to compete in a beauty pageant. This requires scrutinizing the physical characteristics that are rewarded in such competitions and their distribution among the sexes. The analysis casts doubt on the coherence of simple sex segregation and facilitates a feminist critique of beauty standards. Keywords: transgender inclusion; sex segregation; beauty pageants; sports; fairness; gender Sex segregation has long been thought to be a necessary ingredient of fairness in physical competitions, including Olympic sports. However, there is growing recognition that strict sex segregation threatens to ex- clude from competition those who are transgender, transsexual, or inter- sex, which is itself a form of unfairness. This tension played out recently in an unusual venue. When Jenna Talackova, a young trans woman, was disqualified from the Miss Universe Canada pageant in 2012 on account of not being a “natural female,” she appealed to Donald Trump, who owns the Miss Universe brand. Trump reversed the decision to great ac- claim and made a folk hero out of Talackova, who immediately became one of the most recognizable symbols of trans rights in Canada.1 The decision seemed to prove that Talackova was, after all, a “real” woman, and that the initial ruling had merely been a manifestation of transphobia.

  • Supporting Transgender and Gender Expansive Students in BC Elementary Schools Information and Resources for Educators
Running head: SUPPORTING TRANSGENDER STUDENTS Supporting Transgender and Gender Non-conforming Students in B.C. Elementary Schools Marie H. Doiron A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF EDUCATION In Educational Leadership Vancouver Island University NANAIMO, BRITISH COLUMBIA December 2017 SUPPORTING TRANSGENDER STUDENTS ii Abstract Research has illustrated that transgender and gender non-conforming students are a vulnerable population in our schools (Greytak et al., 2009; Palmer et al., 2012; Taylor & Peter, 2011a; Taylor et al., 2016b; Young, 2011). Educators do not always have the knowledge base to feel confident in their ability to support these groups of students (Garcia & Slesaransky-Poe, 2010; Payne & Smith, 2014; Slesaransky-Poe et al., 2013). Research has shown there is a need for supportive and gender inclusive policies, professional development and training for staff, and curriculum that is inclusive of the wide variety of gender expressions present in our schools (Taylor & Peter, 2011b; Taylor et al., 2016b; Snapp et al., 2015; Kennedy & Hellen, 2010). Current resources developed to support transgender students tend to have a primarily high school focus and lack specific information about British Columbia laws, policies, or curriculum (Anti- Defamation League, 2014; Bowers & Lopez, 2012; Maheu, Hillyard, & Jenkins, 2012, Orr & Baum, 2015; Wells, Roberts, & Allan, 2012). The primary purpose of this project is to create a resource manual to help elementary schools in British Columbia support and welcome the transgender and gender non-conforming students who are in schools throughout the province. Keywords: transgender, gender non-conforming, gender expansive, gender identity, elementary, resource, heteronormativity, social transition SUPPORTING TRANSGENDER STUDENTS iii Acknowledgements I would like to start by thanking Dr.

  • Counseling Transgender Families 1
Running head: COUNSELING TRANSGENDER FAMILIES 1 An AFFIRMative Approach to Counseling Transgender Clients and Their Families Tory Clark Livia M. D’Andrea University of Nevada, Reno University of Nevada, Reno COUNSELING TRANSGENDER FAMILIES 2 Abstract There has been growing awareness among researchers of the negative mental and physical outcomes for transgender family members that experience rejection from their family or caretakers. Recent research has consistently linked family rejection with increased risk of suicide, suicidal ideation, substance misuse, risky behaviors, and other mental and physical conditions that put transgender individuals at greater risk for harm (Ryan, Russell, Huebner, Diaz, & Sanchez, 2010). Research further supports the idea that families generally want to accept transgender members, but they need help and guidance to understand the many issues involved. The goal of this paper is to describe an affirmative model of family therapy that addresses the six core areas that research and the authors’ experience have shown to help families understand and embrace their transgender member while providing quality care to the entire family. The model is presented as an AFFIRMative approach, which includes the need to Assess the family for current health, Familiarize oneself with the current language and landscape of the transgender world, Foster communication among family members, Identify communication patterns, Refer families to an accepting, multidisciplinary team of professionals as needed, and Maintain contact with the family as they grow and move toward their desired goals. These areas are explained in light of current research and practice. Keywords: transgender families; affirmative family therapy; transgender risk factors; family rejection COUNSELING TRANSGENDER FAMILIES 3 An AFFIRMative Approach to Counseling Transgender Clients and Their Families Introduction One thousand, three hundred transgender people were murdered between January 1, 2008 and October 31, 2013 (Transrespect versus transphobia worldwide, 2013).

  • Created He Them April 20, 2012
CREATED HE THEM By Michael Ventura April 20, 2012 Jenna Talackova, 23 years old, took it for granted that a transgender beauty like herself had a shot at Miss Universe. A commonsensical friend might have advised: “Girl, don’t try. They’ll break your heart.” But what broke was not her heart. Talackova had made it to the finals of the Miss Vancouver competition when officials of Miss Universe Canada discovered she was not “naturally born” a female, as their rules stipulated. She was disqualified. How she was disqualified is the most revealing aspect of her story. The Miss Universe officials did not have a “How could you?!/How dare you!” attitude. Dennis Davila, Miss Universe Canada’s national director, said, “[S]he is a real girl.” Officially, his organization stated that it must abide by its rules. “We do, however, respect her goals, determination, and wish her the best” (Daily Mail online, March 24). A public tussle ensued. Gloria Allred challenged the Miss Universe Organization’s owners: Donald Trump and NBC. Trump ordered Talackova reinstated; instead, she held out for a rules change. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation worked with the Miss Universe Organization to change its rules so that transgender women could compete in its pageants worldwide (these include America’s Miss USA and Miss Teen). Finally, on ABC’s 20/20, a conversation with Barbara Walters – interviewer of superstars and first ladies – pinned the establishment’s bluest ribbon of media respectability upon Jenna Talackova’s status as a woman. This attention is not just an aberration of the permissive West.
