Elegies for Empire The Poetics of Memory in the Late Work of Du Fu (712-770) Gregory M. Patterson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 ! 2013 Gregory M. Patterson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Elegies for Empire: The Poetics of Memory in the Late Work of Du Fu (712-770) Gregory M. Patterson This dissertation explores highly influential constructions of the past at a key turning point in Chinese history by mapping out what I term a poetics of memory in the more than four hundred poems written by Du Fu !" (712-770) during his two-year stay in the remote town of Kuizhou (modern Fengjie County #$%). A survivor of the catastrophic An Lushan rebellion (756-763), which transformed Tang Dynasty (618-906) politics and culture, Du Fu was among the first to write in the twilight of the Chinese medieval period. His most prescient anticipation of mid-Tang concerns was his restless preoccupation with memory and its mediations, which drove his prolific output in Kuizhou. For Du Fu, memory held the promise of salvaging and creatively reimagining personal, social, and cultural identities under conditions of displacement and sweeping social change. The poetics of his late work is characterized by an acute attentiveness to the material supports—monuments, rituals, images, and texts—that enabled and structured connections to the past. The organization of the study attempts to capture the range of Du Fu’s engagement with memory’s frameworks and media. It begins by examining commemorative poems that read Kuizhou’s historical memory in local landmarks, decoding and rhetorically emulating great deeds of classical exemplars.

However, their origin remains a matter of debate, and has been interpreted previously as the result of fluvial erosion after peneplain uplift. Here, a new formation mechanism for these low-relief surface landscapes has been proposed, based on the analyses of low-relief surface distribution, swath profiles, χ mapping, river capture landform characteristics, and a numerical analytical model. The results showed that the low-relief surfaces in the Three Gorges area could be divided into higher elevation and lower elevation surfaces, distributed mainly in the highlands between the Yangtze River and Qingjiang River.

To complete the world’s largest hydropower project to date, the gargantuan Three Gorges Dam drowned out villages, towns, cities, biodiversity, wildlife, and sites of ancient historical and cultural value. But the undertaking was also expected to, among other benefits and triumphs, expand the region as a site of interest to visitors. It was said, tourists would be able to savour, in greater safety and comfort, China’s legendary Yangtze River along waters, once rushing and dangerous, now tamed by the dam’s 660- km-long reservoir.

  • Know the Human Impact on China's Physical Geography. Can You
Geography – Week Beginning 9th November WALT: Know the human impact on China’s physical geography. Can you remember the knowledge we gained in our last lesson? Can you remember the different ways China’s regions are organised? (The answers on the last page to see if you were correct) What does physical geography mean? Physical geography refers to the natural features and landscape of a country. These are all different landscapes in China. The Yangtze River The Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world, at 6300km. It runs through ten provinces and the municipality of Shanghai. It's source is Tanggula Mountain in Tibet and its mouth is the East China sea. The Yangtze River flows through both urban and rural regions. The Yangtze River is used for many different purposes including growing rice and sightseeing. There are many scenic parts of the Yangtze River, including the Three Gorges. Qutang Gorge Xiling Gorge Wu Gorge The Three Gorges Dam Recently, a dam has been built in the middle of the Three Gorges area of the river. What do you think the purpose of this structure is? The main reason that the Three Gorges Dam was built was to prevent flooding further down the river in Wuhan, Najing and Shanghai. The dam controls the amount of water allowed through. The water that the dam holds back has created an artificial lake called a reservoir. This area has become very popular with tourists. The Three Gorges Dam is also the world's largest hydroelectric power station.
