I just finished reading an article that was written by Katherine Drovdahl … ”Poisonous Plants for Goats: Avoiding Dastardly Disasters” and want to say THANK YOU to her for publishing that article! We have two Nigerian Dwarf goats and have been steadily working on our property to remove the toxic plants that I am able to identify. I have read a lot of articles about toxic plants for goats and have seen the red maple (Acer rubrum) referenced as toxic, but I have not found anything that explained the actual effect the maple leaves have on the goats. Most spoke to the effects it had on horses. We have lots and lots of red maples on our property, more than is feasible to remove completely, but we have removed them from the immediate goat pasture area and are slowly working on reducing their numbers surrounding the area.     EXPLORING THE NEW YORK SLOW FASHION VALUE CHAIN: LOCAL ANIMALS, FIBERS, AND KNITWEAR A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Helen Xiomara Trejo August 2014 © HELEN XIOMARA TREJO 2014 ABSTRACT This study explores the prospective development of a Fibershed in the strong fiber community of New York. It draws inspiration from the Northern California Fibershed project. “Fibershed” is a reference to fiber farms, mills, and artisan studios that support regional clothing cultures and economies. The first part of this study explored the diversity of NY fiber farms, with a focus on current marketing strategies implemented by 67 fiber farmers. The second part of the study implemented fiber farmer’s marketing strategies into a consumer survey for locally produced wool, alpaca, and cashmere knitwear. Nine marketing conditions were developed that presented basic information, emphasized local production, and the individuality of the fiber animals. Findings from 250 NY women suggested that the marketing strategies do not influence product evaluation. However, other variables including product personality, user image congruence, and consumer ethnocentricity positively influenced product evaluation. Findings from the consumer survey highlight the difficulty marketing fiber products online, especially among a consumer market that prefers to touch fiber products before purchasing. With meat production setting the selection criteria, the Dutch farmers created the boer goat as a unique breed of livestock. The first full-blooded boer goats came to the United States in 1993. Since that time, a tremendous amount of interest in breeding boer goats has exploded in the United States. There is a breed association dedicated to this goat called “The American Boer Goat Association (ABGA).” Breed Characteristics: ● Boer goats are noted for being the largest of the meat goat breeds. They are fast growing, docile, and have high fertility rates. ● Compared to the other goat breeds, Boer does have been reported to have superior mothering skills. ● Boers are a hardy breed which can adopt themselves to most weather and climate conditions. ● They are typically white bodied with a brown head, but no preference is given to hair color (per current ABGA breed standards). Some may be completely white or brown. ● They possess long pendulous ears. ● A mature Boer buck can weigh between 200-340 pounds while females can range from 190-230 pounds. 4 5 Kiko Origin: New Zealand ​ The “Kiko” is a Maori word which means flesh or meat. The breed was developed by Garrick and Anne Batten of Nelson in the northern South island in the 1980’s.
