  • THE ANCESTORS: the Ancestors Need to Be Strong Actor/Singers That Can Carry Solo Work
THE ANCESTORS: The Ancestors need to be strong actor/singers that can carry solo work. There are five ancestors: LAOZI (pronounced LAU-tsi) represents Honor and is the leader of the group. LIN represents Loyalty and is the hardest on Mulan; Lin does not appreciate any challenges to the oldworld belief system. ZHANG (ZANG) represents Strength, the strong silent type. HONG represents Destiny and is Laozi's right-hand man. YUN (YOON) represents Love and is Mulan's greatest advocate from the beginning – the mother figure that eventually encourages the others to support Mulan for who she is. All Ancestors may be cast as either male or female. Vocal Range: A3 – D5. Audition song: “Honor to Us All Part 2”. FA ZHOU (fa zoo): Mulan's father, requires a confident and calm performer who has a strong presence and can sing, at least a little. Without playing "older," his calm strength contrasts with Mulan's frenetic energy at the top of the show. Sings a brief solo. Vocal Range: C4 – D5. Audition song: Choose from any of the audition songs. FA LI: Mulan's mother, is someone who also possesses strength but understands her place in her generation and culture. There is a definite wisdom that she passes on to Mulan. Vocal Range: C4 – D5. Audition song: “Honor to Us All Part 2” or any of the other songs on the audition list. GRANDMOTHER FA: Grandmother sees greatness in Mulan, but still wants her to achieve it through tradition. Although she does not need to be a strong singer, an actor with mischief in her eye will work well here.

I’ve disappointed you all. It’s not fair. You shouldn’t have to go. There are plenty of young men to fight for China! Fa Zhou Read: Mulan, hurry! The Matchmaker does not like to be kept waiting. You might not want to anger the one who is deciding your future! Mulan, you dishonor me. It is an honor to protect my country and my family. I know my place. It is time you learned yours. Matchmaker Read: Speaking without permission. Strike one. Too skinny. Humpf! Not good for bearing sons. You clumsy, silly tomboy. You are a disgrace. You may look like a bride but you will never bring your family honor! Mushu Read: What did I miss? Am I late. Am I early? So I guess this means that I’m still on probation? A dragon makes one mistake. One TINY mistake….Poor kid. What does that old Matchmaker know anyway? I didn’t see a ring on her finger. Fa Li Read: Of all the days to be late. We’ve got about 30 seconds to get you ready for the Matchmaker! Mothers and daughters usually speak the same language. Fathers and daughters often need an interpreter. Chi Fu: You would do well to teach your daughter to hold her tongue in a man’s presence. Report tomorrow at dawn to the Wu Zhong Camp! A woman! Next war, check under helmets BEFORE training.

CULTURAL EDUCATION ENTERTAINMENT ENRICHMENT Oconomowoc Area School District FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Michael Duncan Title: Arts Center Director Address: 641 East Forest Street Oconomowoc, WI 53066 Phone: 262.560.213 [email protected] Website: www.theoac.net February 9, 2015 Silver Lake Intermediate School presents Disney’s Mulan Jr. at the OAC Oconomowoc, Wisconsin – Silver Lake Intermediate School students present Disney’s “Mulan Jr.” at 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, March 5, 6 and 7 and at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at the Oconomowoc Arts Center. The production is directed by Silver Lake Intermediate Vocal Music Director, Lynne Carlstein. “Mulan Jr.” is the compelling story of a young girl who takes her injured father’s place when he is drafted into the Chinese Army. Although the penalty for being discovered as a girl in the Army is death, Mulan hides her identity and bravely fights for the Emperor. “Mulan Jr.” is a stage musical version of the 1998 Disney animated film “Mulan.” The show has a 52 member cast playing soldiers, family members and brides-to-be. The score includes favorites "Reflection," "Honor to Us All" and "I'll Make a Man Out of You," as well as new music composed for the production by Stephen Schwartz. Set in ancient China, “Mulan Jr.” is a celebration of cultural traditions, adventure, courage and honor. The song “Written In Stone” describes the village in which Mulan lives, and “Don’t Get In Our Way” allows the “bad guy” Huns to shine in this stage production. Galloping dance moves also honor the culture of the Mongolian horsemen.
