An elite of Shi‘a clerics, religious intellectuals and militants carefully pays attention to what is said, thought and written in Qom, Tehran and Mashhad. The "Islamic sphere" (al-hala al- islamiyya) in which they move has no borders and exists wherever individuals meet, exchange information and news they picked up elsewhere, reminisce, discuss and debate. Students of the religious sciences from all corners of the Shi‘a worlds visit Qom for a while, then leave again, taking with them knowledge and a certain idea of Islamic modernity which they will transmit to others.

  • Philosophical Underpinnings of Islamic Management Method: Worldview, Epistemology and Ontology
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 2 No. 20 [Special Issue – October 2012] Philosophical Underpinnings of Islamic Management Method: Worldview, Epistemology and Ontology Fadzila Azni Ahmad 1 Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV) School of Social Sciences Universiti Sains Malaysia Penang, Malaysia Abstract This article focusses on the discussion pertaining to the philosophical underpinnings of Islamic management method. It represents the elements that should form the basis of determining and characterising Islamic management method and to differentiate it with the conventional management method. The basic elements referred to are worldview (tasawur), epistemology and ontology of the management mehod itself. The conventional management method is used extensively in almost all institutions including Islamic development institutions. For example, the Total Quality Management (TQM), the Quality Control Cirlces (QCC) and the Business Process Reengineering (BPR) have often been used to manage a substantial part of today’s Islamic development institutions. The question which arises is whether these conventional management method are appropriate to be adopted in managing the Islamic development institutions or the Islamic based development itself? Does it have sufficient analytical instruments to examine and decipher management challenges and even more so to offer management solutions according to Islam? This article seeks to address these issues with the focus of discussion on the three elements that have become the fundamental basis of assessing the underlying philosophic assumptions of management method that is the mould or tasawur (worldview), its basis of knowledge or epistemology and its characteristics or ontology. Introduction Most of the Islamic development institutions that are being developed today aim at offering products and services that are based on Islam.

CONVERGENCEEPISTEMOLOGIES OF LEGAL STUDIES PERSPECTIVES OF ISLAMIC PHILOSOPHY Yogi Prasetyo& Absori Pasca Sarjana Ilmu Hukum Unversitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta ([email protected]) Abstract Epistemology of knowledge, also epistemology of legal studies, which is derived from the senses, rationality, and inner voices, has their own analysis methods to attain truths; inductive reasoning to seek validity of empirical knowledge, deductive reasoning for knowledge based on reason or rationality, and intuition for that derived from inner voices. The three analysis methods often lead to debate and contradicting claims creating a conflicting truth in epistemology. This conflicting claims of truth results in stagnancy, deviation, and distortion, in which the truth attained during the process may be misused for certain parties, since in the field of law, truth may be established to accommodate one‟s needs. Therefore, it is crucial to create a concept which reconciles various epistemologies in knowledge, as well in legal studies, which is through a convergence of epistemology in legal studies through the perspective of Islamic philosophy. Through Islamic philosophy which is based on Quran, a conflicting knowledge derived through the senses, rationality, and inner voices will reconcile in one central point.Islamic philosophy which is based on Quran is the basis for epistemological truth derived from the senses, rationality, and inner voices, to simultaneously and jointly understand and complement each others‟ strengths and weaknesses through a circular triadic process in order to reach reconciliation.

The task of the first investigation undertaken can be summarized as follows: To provide evidence for the [rationality] logic which asserts that the rational method of thought is sound, and that the mind - as it is equipped with necessary knowledge prior to experience - is the primary criterion of human thought. There can be no philosophical or a scientific thought that does not submit to this general criterion. Even the experience that empiricists claim to be the primary criterion is not in reality anything but an instrument for applying the rational criterion.

  • Marxism and Other Western Fallacies
Marxism and Other Western Fallacies An Islamic Critique ALI SHARI’ATI Translated by R. CAMPBELL Islamic Foundation Press Contents Preface MARXISM AND OTHER WESTERN FALLACIES: On Humanism Modern Calamities Humanity between Marxism and Religion MYSTICISM, EQUALITY, AND FREEDOM Preface THIS IS A BOOK that speaks for itself too eloquently to need a lengthy and laudatory introduction. The appreciation of its intrinsic interest may, however, be enhanced by an awareness of the political and intellectual context in which it was produced – that of Islamic Iran moving inexorably forward to the heroic destruction of one of the most hideous tyrannies of modern times and the immense task of creating a new state, society, economy, and culture. Among the architects of this movement, the most important is indisputably Imam Khomeini himself, who in rare, almost unique fashion has come not only to exercise political and religious leadership, but also to be the symbol of Iranian nationhood and, beyond that, a precious exemplar of the human ideal of Islam. But other than Imam Khomeini, no one has had a more penetrating influence than the writer of this work, the late Ali Shari’ati. We will not repeat here the detailed and analytical biography of Shari’ati that has been published elsewhere,1 but instead draw attention to the amplitude and depth of this posthumous influence on the Iranian revolution. In all the diverse speeches, lectures and writings of Shari’ati, there is barely a single reference to the political, economic and other miseries of Pahlavi Iran, and yet it is necessary now to designate him as the chief ideologue of the Iranian Islamic revolution.
