The conference is organized around four threads of radical archival practice: Archive and Affect, or the embodied archive; Archiving Around Absence, or reading for the shadows; Archives and Ethics, or stealing from and for archives; and Archive as Constellation, or archive as method, medium, and interface. Contact: Alyson Cluck 212/998-6782 or [email protected] Major Exhibition Poses Tough Questions And Reasserts Fluxus Attitude Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life and Fluxus at NYU: Before and Beyond open at NYU’s Grey Art Gallery on September 9, 2011 New York City (July 21, 2011)—On view from September 9 through December 3, 2011, at New York University’s Grey Art Gallery, Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life features over 100 works dating primarily from the 1960s and ’70s by artists such as George Brecht, Robert Filliou, Ken Friedman, George Maciunas, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Mieko Shiomi, Ben Vautier, and La Monte Young. Curated by art historian Jacquelynn Baas and organized by Dartmouth College’s Hood Museum of Art, the exhibition draws heavily on the Hood’s George Maciunas Memorial Collection, and includes art objects, documents, videos, event scores, and Fluxkits. Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life is accompanied by a second installation, Fluxus at NYU: Before and Beyond, in the Grey’s Lower Level Gallery. Fluxus—which began in the 1960s as an international network of artists, composers, and designers―resists categorization as an art movement, collective, or group. It also defies traditional geographical, chronological, and medium-based approaches. Instead, Fluxus participants employ a “do-it-yourself” attitude, relating their activities to everyday life and to viewers’ experiences, often blurring the boundaries between art and life. Offering a fresh look at Fluxus, the show and its installation are George Maciunas, Burglary Fluxkit, 1971. Contact: Alyson Cluck 212/998-6782 or [email protected] Beat Memories: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg At NYU’s Grey Art Gallery January 15–April 6, 2013 First major New York exhibition of Ginsberg’s photographs Spontaneous, uninhibited snapshots capture poet’s contemporaries; celebrate “the sacredness of the moment” through image and text New York City (September 28, 2012)—Compelling photographs taken by renowned 20th- century American poet Allen Ginsberg (1926–1997) of himself and his fellow Beat poets are the subject of the first scholarly exhibition and catalogue of these works. New York University’s Grey Art Gallery will present Beat Memories: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg, which includes portraits of literary luminaries such as William S. Burroughs, Neal Cassady, Gregory Corso, and Jack Kerouac, on view from January 15 through April 6, 2013. Organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and curated by senior curator of photographs Sarah Greenough, the exhibition features 94 black-and-white works—many accompanied by Ginsberg’s intimate, handwritten captions—that convey the spontaneity, freedom, and exuberant lifestyle of the Beat Generation. The presentation at the Grey Art Gallery will be supplemented by original manuscripts, typewritten poems, correspondence, drawings, and sketches produced by Ginsberg and the individuals he photographed. “We are pleased to host this exhibition of Ginsberg’s celebrated portraits,” notes Lynn Gumpert, director of the Grey Art Gallery. “Many were taken within walking distance of Greenwich Village, which holds countless favored Beat haunts. Exhibiting Beat Memories at the Grey Art Gallery displays these captivating works nearly next door to their original settings. -

Contact: Alyson Cluck 212/998-6782 or [email protected] Toxic Beauty: The Art of Frank Moore At NYU’s Grey Art Gallery and Fales Library September 6 – December 8, 2012 First New York museum solo exhibition of artist Frank Moore Retrospective explores themes of the environment, the AIDS crisis, and the 1980s Downtown New York scene New York City (May 2, 2012)—On view from September 6 through December 8, 2012, at New York University’s Grey Art Gallery and Fales Library, Toxic Beauty: The Art of Frank Moore is the most comprehensive presentation to date of work by this remarkable artist whose life was cut short by AIDS. Curated by independent scholar Susan Harris with Grey Art Gallery director Lynn Gumpert, the exhibition features approximately 35 major paintings and over 50 gouaches, prints, and drawings, as well as numerous sketchbooks, films, maquettes, source materials, and ephemera. Spanning Frank Moore’s entire career, the retrospective will be on view at both the Grey Art Gallery and the Tracey/Barry Gallery at Fales Library, which houses NYU’s special collections and renowned Downtown Collection, the world’s most extensive archive of books, journals, posters, and ephemera relating to lower Manhattan’s artistic scene since 1970. “We are pleased to host this first major survey of Frank Moore’s remarkable work,” notes Lynn Gumpert. “The Grey Art Gallery and Fales Library are ideal locations for this scholarly assessment. NYU’s lower Manhattan location was also the former stomping grounds of Moore and his artist friends active in the Downtown scene.” Born in New York City, Frank Moore (1953–2002) was raised on Long Island and spent his childhood summers in the Adirondacks, sparking a lifelong interest in the natural environment. -
