The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda 1 ABOUT FACULTY OF SCIENCE The Faculty of Science is a Constituent Institution of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda under the direct management and control of the University. The Old Baroda College which was founded in the year 1881 consisted of Arts and Science Sections. The Faculty of Science started its independent existence in March, 1951 with Dr. C.S. Patel as its First Dean. The Old Building which houses the Faculty of Science at present was completed in early 30s during the reign of Srimant Sayajirao III Gaekwad, a far sighted Ruler and maker of modern Baroda. The building is conspicuous by its small copper dome and is flanked on the west by the building of Faculty of Education and Psychology and on the east by the majestic building of the Old Baroda College, now the Faculty of Arts. The Faculty comprise of 12 Departments including Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Applications, Environmental Studies, Geography, Geology, Mathematics, Microbiology and Biotechnology, Physics, Statistics and Zoology. The Faculty also houses the Vikram Sarabhai Institute of Cell and Molecular Biology and Prof. Bharat Chattoo Genome Research Center. The faculty boasts of excellent teaching and research facilities and has contributed immensely in form of research grants, articles and patents. Petruševski,1 Marina Stojanovska,1 Bojan Šoptrajanov2 ABSTRACT During the last two decades, numerous attempts have been made to “modernize” science education, chemistry education in particular. Microscale experiments, such as projected experiments, have become favorites of many educators and instructors. Although these experiments might be useful for hands-on approach or for quick demonstrations in large lecture rooms, educators often overlook the shortcomings. Those whose wish is to “modernize” chemistry/ science education often use modern equipment that does not explain the science phenomena as well as the traditional experiment. Therefore, these microscale experiments sometimes distort the information gathered—information that is easily obtained by the macroscopic—or traditional—approach. The question arises: do we, occasionally, modernize just to be modern? This paper discusses two groups of examples: (1) those where the modern (in this case the microscale) approach is a step in the right direction and (2) examples where “modernization” appears to be a step backwards, like insisting on microscale experiments where they completely fail, or using projectors and movies instead of performing experiments in vivo. Unfortunately, instructors often avoid this demonstration due to difficulties initiating the oscillating redox reaction that drives the process. Here, we describe a new method for initiating the mercury beating heart demonstration that significantly reduces the setup time and makes it easier to sustain the “beating heart” oscillations. Attard Word count ≈ 24530 words UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON ABSTRACT FACULTY OF NATURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES Chemistry Doctor of Philosophy UNCOVERING FEATURES OF CHEMICAL REACTION NETWORKS IN COMPLEX SYSTEMS by Duncan J. Parker This thesis introduces a comprehensive atlas of behaviour in the iron-catalysed Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction across a wide parameter space, under both stirred and unstirred conditions, encompassing variations in the concentra- tions of sulfuric acid, malonic acid and sodium bromate. All stirred re- actions were monitored by UV-vis spectroscopy enabling the definition of concentration-dependent transitions in behaviour including those to chaotic oscillation. A programme was generated to quantify spirals observed in the unstirred re- action. This expanded on the work of Müller et al. by increasing the length of time that such spirals had been monitored. There was good agreement between their experimental results and those set out in this thesis, which shows the transition from normal spiral wave behaviour to a final steady state. The work on spiral waves also includes the first use of a statisti- cal image-based method for identifying changes in chemical wave behaviour with time. Attempts were made at producing a model for the iron-catalysed Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction using a swarm intelligence algorithm having identified key reactions involved in modifying the reaction behaviour based upon the Marburg-Budapest-Missoula model. -
