Operational policy Visitor management Orienteering and rogaining in QPWS-managed areas Operational policies provide a framework for consistent application and interpretation of legislation and for the management of non-legislative matters by the Environmental Protection Agency (incorporating the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service). Operational policies are not intended to be applied inflexibly in all circumstances. Individual circumstances may require a modified application of policy. Policy subject This policy outlines the circumstances in which the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) may authorise and manage the conduct of orienteering and rogaining activities on QPWS-managed areas. Background While QPWS-managed areas provide a range of opportunities for different visitor activities, not all activities can be accommodated, as requirements for conserving natural and cultural values and other considerations including impacts on other uses, management programs, priority community needs and equity dictate against some activities. Orienteering and rogaining activities vary from relatively informal, small scale gatherings to large scale championship or carnival events. Such events can give rise to a range of issues and impacts, including damage to vegetation, disturbance of wildlife and possible disruption of other visitor activities. Further information on these activities is contained in Attachment 1. The particular scale and format of an event or events will determine the extent to which impacts are concentrated or dispersed across the landscape. Particular environments have different conservation and cultural significance and are more or less sensitive (resistant and/or resilient) to particular types, frequencies and intensities of use. Each of these factors will be critical in identifying the risks associated with proposed orienteering and rogaining activities, and in assessing and determining applications to conduct such activities. -

Seven mountain runners participated in this study. They competed in vertical (VR), 10-25 km, 25-45 km and >45 km races. The HR response was measured during the races to calculate the exercise intensity and PL according to the HR at which both the ventilatory (VT) and respiratory compensation threshold (RCT) occurred. The exercise intensity below VT and between VT and RCT increased with mountain running race distance. Likewise, the percentage of racing time spent above RCT decreased when race duration increased. However, the time spent above RCT was similar between races (~50 min). The PL was significantly higher (p<.05) during the longest races (145.0±18.4, 288.8±72.5, 467.3±109.9 and 820.8±147.0 AU in VR, 10-25 km, 25-45 km and >45 km, respectively). The ratio of PL to accumulative altitude gain was similar in all races (~0.16 AU·m-1). -

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated performance trends and the age of peak running speed in ultra-marathons from 50 to 3,100 miles. METHODS: The running speed and age of the fastest competitors in 50-, 100-, 200-, 1,000- and 3,100-mile events held worldwide from 1971 to 2012 were analyzed using single- and multi-level regression analyses. RESULTS: The number of events and competitors increased exponentially in 50- and 100-mile events. For the annual fastest runners, women improved in 50-mile events, but not men. In 100-mile events, both women and men improved their performance. In 1,000-mile events, men became slower. For the annual top ten runners, women improved in 50- and 100-mile events, whereas the performance of men remained unchanged in 50- and 3,100-mile events but improved in 100-mile events. The age of the annual fastest runners was approximately 35 years for both women and men in 50-mile events and approximately 35 years for women in 100-mile events. For men, the age of the annual fastest runners in 100-mile events was higher at 38 years. For the annual fastest runners of 1,000-mile events, the women were approximately 43 years of age, whereas for men, the age increased to 48 years of age. -

Lions XC Summer workout Greenville Lions Workout for the XC Team during the Summer of 2019 Why run during the summer? Without summer training there is no possible way for you to achieve your potential as a runner during the cross-country season – the season is simply too short. Our first official team practice will be on Monday August 12, 2019 at 4:00 p.m here at the school. We will do some running, but mostly this will be a team meeting. What should be my main focus be during summer running? THE SOLE PURPOSE OF SUMMER TRAINING IS TO ARRIVE THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE WITH A STRONG AEROBIC BASE! Don't focus too much on speed throughout the summer. Just put in the time and miles and get your lungs, joints, tendons, ligaments, and BRAIN used to the rigors of running. Be careful though...it's addictive! At the beginning of the school year, if I were to say “we’re going on a ten mile run” you should be able to finish with a reasonable degree of ease. Start setting goals for the XC season, both as an individual and as a team. Set a goal of running a certain 5k time. Run some local 5k’s and 10k’s this summer on your own and experience the thrill of setting a new PR. Talk with more experienced runners at team runs to get an idea of reasonable goals if you don’t have any ideas, but make sure to have something that you desire to achieve --- if you don’t know what you want to achieve it doesn’t much matter what you do. -

Ultramarathons
Name Date Ultramarathons A marathon is a long-distance running event. A marathon is officially 26.2 miles long. When a running event is longer than 26.2 miles, it is called an ultramarathon. Over 70,000 people complete ultramarathons every year. There are two kinds of ultramarathons. In the first kind of ultramarathon, runners have to cover a specific distance—50 miles, for example. In the second kind of ultramarathon, runners have a limited amount of time, such as 24 hours, to cover as much distance as they can. Some ultramarathons are run as loops around a track or course. Others are run on trails through forests, deserts, or mountains. Many ultramarathons that are run on trails include natural obstacles that a runner will have to overcome, such as rocky paths or bad weather. Ultramarathons are run all over the world. There is an ultramarathon on every continent, even Antarctica. Because it is so expensive to travel to Antarctica, those who want to participate in an Antarctic ultramarathon usually have to pay many thousands of dollars. The most famous race across Antarctica is called The Last Desert Race. Runners pay over $14,000 to compete in this race. They must also buy special equipment to protect themselves against the extreme cold. People who want to train to run in an ultramarathon should first gain experience running regular marathons. Once you have completed a few marathons, you can add more and more distance every time you run. Besides practicing, there are a few other things you can do to help you prepare to run an ultramarathon. -

SUGAR HILL ROGAINE II CNYO’s 20th ANNUAL ROGAINE 2010 UNITED STATES ROGAINING CHAMPIONSHIPS Date: July 31-August 1, 2010 Time: Mass start at noon on Saturday. Map issue for planning at 10am on Saturday. Duration: There will be options for 6, 12, and 24 hours. Only the 24 hour event is the official US Rogaining Championships. See more details further down about award categories and eligibility requirements. What is a Rogaine? The concept is very straightforward—teams of two to five people have a fixed time (6, 12, or 24 hours in this event) to visit as many checkpoints as possible, walking, running or resting as they see fit. The checkpoints (controls) are spread over a large area, and are pre-marked on a map issued shortly before the start of the event. Point values for visiting each control vary (and are specified in advance) depending on such factors as the distance from the start/finish area, elevation, navigational complexity, and the whims of the course setter. The members of the team must stay together throughout the event, for reasons of safety. Who may participate? Participants in rogaining come from diverse backgrounds, including hikers, cross-country runners, trail runners, adventure racers, ultra-runners, orienteers, and family groups. Even at a championship event such as this, a wide variety of competitive intensity is found, varying from the casual stroller wanting to add some variety to the weekend hike to serious athletes expecting to vie for the top spots in their category, going with no sleep and at a running pace for most of the event. -

The Czech Republic was the first European country hosting World Rogaining Championships (in 2002), in 2012 we organized the other World Rogaining Championships in Prebuz. CAR also has organized Czech Rogaining Championships for 22 consecutive years – that is the longest series in Europe. In 2015 the Czech Championships was joined with the European Rogaining Championships.
