FRESHWATER FISH SURVEY OF HOMADOLA-NAKIYADENIYA ESTATES, SRI LANKA. Prepared by Hiranya Sudasinghe BSc. (Hons) Zoology, M.Phil. reading (University of Peradeniya) INTRODUCTION The diversity of freshwater fishes in Sri Lanka is remarkably high, with a total of 93 indigenous fishes being recorded from inland waters, out of which 53 are considered to be endemic (MOE, 2012; Batuwita et al., 2013). Out of these, 21 are listed as Critically Endangered, 19 as Endangered and five as Vulnerable in the National Red List (MOE, 2012). In addition, several new species of freshwater fishes have been discovered in the recent past which have not yet been evaluated for Red Listing (Batuwita et al., 2017; Sudasinghe 2017; Sudasinghe & Meegaskumbura, 2016; Sudasinghe et al., 2016). Out of the 22 families that represent the Sri Lankan freshwater ichthyofauna, the family Cyprinidae dominates, representing about 50% of the species, followed by the families Gobiidae, Channidae and Bagridae, which represent seven, five and four species, respectively. The remainder of the other families are each represented in Sri Lanka by three species or less. Four major ichthyological zones, viz. Southwestern zone, Mahaweli zone, Dry zone and the Transition zone were identified by Senanayake and Moyle (1982) based on the distribution and the endemism of the fish. The Southwestern zone shows the greatest diversity, followed by the Mahaweli zone, with the least diversity observed in the Dry zone. About 60% of the freshwater fishes occur both in the dry and the wet zones of the island while the rest are more or less restricted to the wet zone. Of the endemic fishes, more than 60% are restricted to the wet zone of the island while about 30% occur in both the dry and the wet zones. -

Abstract: Local communities in some Asian, African and American countries, use plant toxins in fish poisoning for fishing activities; however, the effects of this practice on the particular wild fish assemblages is unknown. This study was conducted with the aim to investigate the effects of fish poisoning using Tephrosia candida, on freshwater fish diversity and abundance in streams at the boundary of the World Natural Heritage site, Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Sri Lanka. A total of seven field trips were undertaken on a bimonthly basis, from May 2013 to June 2014. We surveyed five streams with similar environmental and climatological conditions at the boundary of Sinharaja forest. We selected three streams with active fish poisoning practices as treatments, and two streams with no fish poisoning as controls. Physico-chemical parameters and flow rate of water in selected streams were also measured at bimonthly intervals. Fish were sampled by electrofishing and nets in three randomly selected confined locations (6 x 2 m stretch) along every stream. Fish species were identified, their abundances were recorded, and Shannon-Weiner diversity index was calculated for each stream. Streams were clustered based on the Bray-Curtis similarity matrix for fish composition and abundance. -

Applied Fisheries and Aquaculture Scope of the Programme The program is designed as a four semester, two year programme under the Credit and Semester System. The programme will cater to the higher study opportunity for under graduate programmes in the related fields, in this university and other universities within the country and abroad. The fishing industry is in need of highly skilled man power and this programme will create the necessary skill sets among the aspiring students. The general skill sets attained will relate to Biology, Capture, Culture and Management of fisheries. The focus areas of this programme are Aquaculture Technology, Fisheries Business Management, Fish Capture Technology and Fish Processing Technology. Semester I covers such aspects as Taxonomy of fishes, Biochemistry, Biophysics and Research Methodology and Biostatistics and Computer Applications. The practical paper includes topics from all the four theory papers. In Semester II, the topics covered are Ecology of Aquatic Ecosystems and Inland Aquaculture, Ornamental Fisheries, Genetics and Biotechnology and Health Management in Aquaculture. Only one practical paper is assigned for this semester covering the experimental aspects of inland aquaculture, ornamental fisheries and health management. In Semester III, three theory courses are offered including Mariculture, Fish Nutrition and Microbiology & Quality Management. Two practical papers are offered in this semester. The first practical is on Aquaculture and Fish Nutrition while the second practical is on Fishery Microbiology and Quality Control. In addition the students have to undergo training in a reputed hatchery to understand the nuances of breeding and rearing of aquarium fishes and food fishes. -

Background. Dawkinsia tambraparniei (Silas, 1954) is confined to an area not exceeding 100 km2 within a sin- gle watershed—the Tamiraparani River, southern Western Ghats, India. Its populations have recently declined, earning the fish the endangered status. For effective conservation efforts it is important to determine the levels of genetic variation between different populations. Therefore we attempted to quantify the cytochrome b (Cyt b) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequence similarity between different populations of D. tambraparniei, as well as to study the phylogenetic relation with the closely related species D. arulius and D. filamentosa. Materials and methods. Samples were collected from 9 locations and 10 individuals from each were preserved for DNA analysis. The partial sequence of Cyt b and COI genes were amplified and sequenced. The sequences were aligned by the visual method using BioEdit version 7.1.3.0 and edited using Sequencer 4.7. The Bayesian consensus tree was constructed using the Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) method by BEAST v1.7.5. -

Santos, Professor of Biological Sciences Eric Peatman, Associate Professor of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences Abstract Cypriniformes (minnows, carps, loaches, and suckers) is the largest group of freshwater fishes in the world. Despite much attention, previous attempts to elucidate relationships using molecular and morphological characters have been incongruent. The goal of this dissertation is to provide robust support for relationships at various taxonomic levels within Cypriniformes. For the entire order, an anchored hybrid enrichment approach was used to resolve relationships. This resulted in a phylogeny that is largely congruent with previous multilocus phylogenies, but has much stronger support. For members of Leuciscidae, the relationships established using anchored hybrid enrichment were used to estimate divergence times in an attempt to make inferences about their biogeographic history. The predominant lineage of the leuciscids in North America were determined to have entered North America through Beringia ~37 million years ago while the ancestor of the Golden Shiner (Notemigonus crysoleucas) entered ~20–6 million years ago, likely from Europe. Within Leuciscidae, the shiner clade represents genera with much historical taxonomic turbidity. Targeted sequence capture was used to establish relationships in order to inform taxonomic revisions for the clade. -

S.W. Sri Lanka was chosen as a study site because the rainforest and its fish fauna are here severely threatened. Feeding ecology was studied by gut contents analysis. The availability of prey organisms in the environment was quantified and food utilization in each pool was estimated by comparing diet compositions of the fish species with the food availability. Seven cyprinid species represented more than 98% of the fish numbers caught. These were Pethia cumingii (PC), Puntius dorsalis (PD), Dawkinsia singhala (DS), Pethia nigrofasciata (PN), Systomus pleurotaenia (SP), Devario malabaricus (DM) and Rasbora daniconius (RD). Three of these species: the two surface feeders DM and RD and the generalist SP fed > 33 % (biovolume) on terrestrial arthropods. -
