Since then, it has been caught during the periodical (three times per year) monitoring only sporadically. Conversely, in October and November 2012 R. cf. belingi was recorded frequently along an y60-km lowermost stretch of the Nida River. The abundance of this fish gradually increased downstream. This paper provides details of that phenomenon and discusses it in the context of the currently known distribution of this species. Fish sampling was carried out in 2009 by gill nets and „krtol“, traditional hunting tool in the area of Mostarsko Blato (Neretva River Basin, Bosnia and Herzegovina). In order to analyze age structure of the population, 70 units of various age categories were taken. Length range of all analyzed units was from 2,7 to 11,5 cm. By reading otoliths, a total of four age classes was established: 0+, 1+, 2+ and 3+. The largest part of the sample consisted of 2- year-old units (40%). There were 28,6% of 1-year-old units, 27,1% of 3-year-old units, and 4,3% of 4-year- old units. The mean estimated total length (TL) of 1-year-old P. pseudalepidotus was 4 cm; 2-year-old, 6,7 cm; 3-year-old, 9,15 cm; 4-year-old, 11,05 cm.

Climatic oscillations during the Quaternary had an important effect on the actual distribution and the genetic structure of many freshwater fish species, especially in previously glaciated areas due to founder events (Bernatchez, 2001; Ramstad et al., 2004). In addition to natural events, human interactions (such as fisheries, habitat fragmentation and pollution) have imprinted the population genetic structure of many fish species in the recent past (Laroche & Durand, 2004). Combining population genetic data with geographical information, life-history traits of a species and data on past events such as climatic fluctuations or human interference can provide important insights into the factors that shaped the structure of populations, the evolutionary history of a species and its conservation status.

In Croatian watercourses, three members of the genus Barbus are found, B. balcanicus, B. barbus and B. plebejus, each occupying a specific ecological niche. This study examined cytochrome b (cyt b), a common genetic marker used to describe the structure and origin of fish populations to perform a phylogenetic reconstruction of the Danube barbel. Two methods of phylogenetic inference were used: maximum parsimony (MP) and maximum likelihood (ML), which yielded well supported trees of similar topology. The Median joining network (MJ) was generated and corroborated to show the divergence of three lineages of Barbus balcanicus on the Balkan Peninsula: Croatian, Serbian and Macedonian lineages that separated at the beginning of the Pleistocene.

[krijelj 2, S. \ug 2 Summary The first detailed investigation of Gastropods in the basin of river Fojni~ka has been carried out in 2001 –2002. The material has been sam - pled five times during four seasons (October 2001 –September 2002) at 11 sites in the following waterways: the rivers Fojni~ka, Draga~a, @eljeznica, Kre{evka and Lepenica. Measurement of certain physical and chemical parameters (BOD 5, water temperature, pH value, amount of dissolved ox- ygen, saturation with oxygen and one time measurement of concentration of nitrates and phosphates) has been carried out together with collecting of macroinvertebrates of zoobenthos. Since the knowledge of biodiversity of Gastropods in Bosnia and Herzegovina is at the very low level, the main objective of this paper is to give an overview of distribution of Gas- tropods communities in the Fojni~ka river basin. In these investigations, 11 taxa of Gastropods and 1468 individuals have been determined. The Gastropods made 16% of total settlement of macroinvertebrates of zoobenthos. Dominant species at investigated sites was Ancylus fluviatilis , while species Acicula sp. , Saxurinator sp . and Valvata piscinalis were just sporadically recorded.

According to the specific guidelines for Natura 2000, 42.11% are in good conservation status, 31.57% are of average status, and 26.32% are in a partially degraded condition. In this study area, 6 main risk elements were identified related to human impact on the environment: poaching, minor riverbed mor- phodynamic changes, liquid and solid natural flow disruption, habitat fragmentation leading to isolation of fish populations, organic and mining pollution, and destruction of riparian tree and shrub vegetation. All of them have contributed to the decrease of H. hucho distribution in the study area to about 50% of the previous local range. Individuals of this species were recorded in only 21 of the 370 sampling stations.
