AMENDT, P.E. PROJECT MANAGER SAN DIEGO GAS & ELECTRIC Molly is a member of the San Diego chapter of the ASCE, the Younger Member Forum. In 2012 she held the position of membership chair and put her focus on membership recruitment and retention. In 2012 Molly also organized a civil engineering workshop that identified and updated local engineering market opportunities. Molly is also a member of SWE and led a civil engineering activity targeted at 5th through 8th grade Girl Scouts. Molly was the construction manager responsible for the road construction and work pad development for the SDG&E Sunrise Powerlink which was completed on time and on budget in 2012. This $1.88 billion dollar, 117 mile EHV transmission line project will not only provide a renewable energy pathway into the San Diego area for many years into the future, but the timely completion in June 2012 provided relief from the tight energy needs during the summer of 2012. FACULTY ADVISOR ROBERT K. DOWELL, PH.D., P.E. ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY Professor Robert K. Dowell, Ph.D., P.E. is a professor of structural engineering in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering at San Diego State University. Dr. Dowell is one of the advisors for the ASCE SDSU steel bridge and concrete canoe team. Student members gain knowledge and hands-on experience in structural design and analysis for two very different types of structures using computer aided programs such as SAP2000 and by performing hand calculations. Dr. Dowell is the advisor of SDSU’s Seismic Design Team. He enhances their knowledge of structural design with earthquake engineering basics. In addition, he assists the team by performing seismic response tests of the team’s five-foot balsa wood structure. The team is able to observe the structure’s performance under seismic ground motion. Dr. Dowell assisted UCSD’s Seismic Design Team last year by providing the use of SDSU’s shake table, designed and built by Dr. Dowell, to perform seismic performance tests under loading. As an adjunct professor at UCSD, he provides a hands-on project using structural design and analysis using SAP2000 and CAD to student members. Dr. Dowell performs research related to bridges and buildings, including structural testing and detailed nonlinear analyses. He designed and built in-house the first earthquake shaking table at SDSU. In addition, he designed the RC UCSD shake table. “TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE” 7 AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS ASCE San Diego Section 2012 Outstanding Individual Award Recipients CIVIL ENGINEERING STUDENT SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY KARINA GUEVARA Ms. Karina Guevara has shown her dedication as a student member of ASCE SDSU for three years. She served as Events Chair encouraging students to stay involved within ASCE and recruiting others to join. Ms. Guevara organized joint events with the ASCE YMF and ASCE UCSD. As a result, membership recruitment, income from dues, and the excitement exuding from the student chapter increased for the first time in many years. Inspired by professional engineers reaching out to assist students in related fields, Ms. Guevara mentors and encourages other students to join the ASCE student chapter and attend regional conferences and professional networking opportunities with the ASCE San Diego Section and ASCE YMF. She applied her engineering technical skills to assist the ASCE Pacific Southwest Conference (PSWC) concrete canoe and steel bridge teams. Ms. Guevara is currently a fifth year SDSU student serving as Fundraising Chair. Ms. Guevara is currently serving her third term as Vice President and continues to work towards strengthening the organization’s focus on project goals and improving business aspects of the organization’s operations. The most important aspect of her involvement has been her dedication to the clean water project, “Agua Para Siempre”. She is currently working part-time as a Storm Water intern for the City of San Marcos in the engineering department.
