CHAPTER 7 Experiments in Religious Art: Style and Audience The Raising of the Brazen Serpent (fig. 7.1; cat. H.25), engraved on two large copperplates by Pieter van der Heyden and published by Hieronymus Cock in 1555 with an important imperial privilege, re- cords the design of what must have been among the largest paintings Frans Floris produced for his illustrious early patron, the states- man and cleric Cardinal Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle (fig. 7.17). Depicting the punishment inflicted on the Israelites because of their doubts and ingratitude, this spectacular engraving is an image about the salvific powers of looking. God sent poisonous serpents to attack the restive Israelites in the desert. After Moses intervened, the deity commanded them to set up a brazen serpent so that all who looked on it would be healed (Numbers 21: 6–9). In its iconography and its materiality, van der Heyden’s print, an image made from “brazen” copper plates, advances the efficacy of sight as a vehicle for salvation. While the entwining of antique form and Christian content had become a convention of Renaissance art by the sixteenth century, the specificity of the allusions to classical and distinctly Roman art in this sacred istoria is particularly strik- ing. Many of Floris’s writhing figures are explicitly based on antique prototypes and the work of Michelangelo (particularly his Sistine ceiling) and they combine here to form an overpowering display of afflicted bodies arranged as though in a relief. The eye follows the undulating musculature of Floris’s contorted, tormented figures as they fill the image’s foreground, until eventually the gaze reaches the upper left corner where Moses raises up the serpent and those who look upon it are restored to health. -

Via this medium, which we aim to publish at least twice a year, we will keep you informed about various Hollstein projects: more in depth information about some of our current projects, new research, publication schedules, as well as other activities connected to Dutch and Flemish and German prints before 1700. In this first issue you will be introduced by Ad Stijnman to Johannes Teyler and the à la poupée printing technique. These volumes to be published in our series The New Hollstein Dutch & Flemish Etchings, Engravings and Woodcuts, 1450-1700 will be the first ever to be in full colour. Some of our previous volumes on the oeuvres of Hendrick Goltzius and Frans Floris already included a few colour plates but Teyler’s substantial oeuvre covers every colour of the rainbow. Marjolein Leesberg will discuss Gerard and Cornelis de Jode. Her research on the De Jode dynasty resulted in such a wealth of new material that we decided to divide The New Hollstein Dutch & Flemish volumes into two separate publications. The first will cover Gerard and Cornelis de Jode and the second following comprises the subsequent family members Pieter de Jode I, Pieter de Jode II, and Arnold de Jode. With the end of the year quickly approaching, I, on behalf of the whole team, would like to take the opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2017. The Pietà in historical perspective The Pietà is not a scene that can be found in the Gospels. The Gospels describe Crucifixion (El Greco), Deposition or descent from the Cross (Rubens), Laying on the ground (Epitaphios), Lamentation (Giotto), Entombment (Rogier Van de Weyden) So How did this image emerge? Background one-devotional images • Narrative images from the Gospel, e.g Icon of Mary at foot of cross • Devotional images, where scene is taken out of its historical context to be used for prayer. e.g. Man of Sorrows from Constantinople and print of it by Israhel van Meckenhem. The Pietà is one of a number of devotional images that developed from the 13th century, which went with intense forms of prayer in which the person was asked to imagine themselves before the image speaking with Jesus. It emerged first in the Thuringia area of Germany, where there was a tradition of fine wood carving and which was also open to mysticism. Background two-the position of the Virgin Mary • During the middle ages the position of Mary grew in importance, as reflected in the doctrine of the Assumption (Titian), the image of the coronation of the Virgin (El Greco) • So too did the emphasis on Mary sharing in the suffering of Jesus as in this Mater Dolorosa (Titian) • Further background is provided by the Orthodox image of the threnos which was taken up by Western mystics, and the image of The Virgin of Humility A devotional gap? • So the Pietà, which is not a Gospel scene, started to appear as a natural stage, between the Gospel scenes of the crucifixion smf the deposition or descent from the cross on the one hand, and the stone of annointing, the lamentation, and the burial on the other. -

Simple Summary: The small size of the feline mandible makes its manipulation difficult when fixing dislocations of the temporomandibular joint or mandibular fractures. In both cases, non-invasive techniques should be considered first. When not possible, fracture repair with internal fixation using bone plates would be the best option. Simple jaw fractures should be repaired first, and caudal to rostral. In addition, a ventral approach makes the bone fragments exposure and its manipulation easier. However, the cat mandible has little space to safely place the bone plate screws without damaging the tooth roots and/or the mandibular blood and nervous supply. Leo Steinberg, Picasso and The Representation of States of Consciousness Abstract In the present study, I will consider Leo Steinberg’s interpretation of Picasso’s work in its theoretical framework, and I will focus on a particular topic: Steinberg’s account of “Picas- so’s Sleepwatchers.” I will suggest that the Steinbergian argument on Picasso’s depictorial modalities of sleep and the state of being awake advances the hypothesis of a new way of representing affectivity in images, by subsuming emotions into a “peinture conceptuelle.” This operation corresponds to a shift from modernism to further characterizing the post- modernist image as a “flatbed picture plane.” For such a passage, I will also provide an overall view of Cubism’s main phenomenological lectures. IRC-13-17 Analyses of Thoracic and Lumbar Spine Injuries in Frontal IRCOBIImpacts Conference 2013 Thorsten Adolph, Marcus Wisch, Andre Eggers, Heiko Johannsen, Richard Cuerden, Jolyon Carroll, David Hynd, Ulrich Sander Abstract In general the passive safety capability is much greater in newer versus older cars due to the stiff compartment preventing intrusion in severe collisions. However, the stiffer structure which increases the deceleration can lead to a change in injury patterns. In order to analyse possible injury mechanisms for thoracic and lumbar spine injuries, data from the German In‐Depth Accident Study (GIDAS) were used in this study. A two‐step approach of statistical and case‐by‐case analysis was applied for this investigation. In total 4,289 collisions were selected involving 8,844 vehicles, 5,765 injured persons and 9,468 coded injuries. Thoracic and lumbar spine injuries such as burst, compression or dislocation fractures as well as soft tissue injuries were found to occur in frontal impacts even without intrusion to the passenger compartment. If a MAIS 2+ injury occurred, in 15% of the cases a thoracic and/or lumbar spine injury is included. Considering AIS 2+ thoracic and lumbar spine, most injuries were fractures and occurred in the lumbar spine area. From the case by case analyses it can be concluded that lumbar spine fractures occur in accidents without the engagement of longitudinals, lateral loading to the occupant and/or very severe accidents with MAIS being much higher than the spine AIS. Alana Koontz The Art and Artifacts Associated with the Cult of Dionysus Alana Koontz is a student at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee graduating with a degree in Art History and a certificate in Ancient Mediterranean Studies. The main focus of her studies has been ancient art, with specific attention to ancient architecture, statuary, and erotic symbolism in ancient art. Through various internships, volunteering and presentations, Alana has deepened her understanding of the art world, and hopes to do so more in the future. Alana hopes to continue to grad school and earn her Master’s Degree in Art History and Museum Studies, and eventually earn her PhD. Her goal is to work in a large museum as a curator of the ancient collections. Alana would like to thank the Religious Studies Student Organization for this fantastic experience, and appreciates them for letting her participate. Dionysus was the god of wine, art, vegetation and also widely worshipped as a fertility god. The cult of Dionysus worshipped him fondly with cultural festivities, wine-induced ritualistic dances, 1 intense and violent orgies, and secretive various depictions of drunken revelry. 2 He embodies the intoxicating portion of nature. Dionysus, in myth, was the last god to be accepted at Mt Olympus, and was known for having a mortal mother. He spent his adulthood teaching the cultivation of grapes, and wine-making. The worship began as a celebration of culture, with plays and processions, and progressed into a cult that was shrouded in mystery. Later in history, worshippers would perform their rituals in the cover of darkness, limiting the cult-practitioners to women, and were surrounded by myth that is sometimes interpreted as fact. -

THE CATHAR CRUCIFIX: NEW EVIDENCE OF THE SHROUD’S MISSING HISTORY By Jack Markwardt Copyright 2000 All Rights Reserved Reprinted by Permission INTRODUCTION Shortly after the dawn of the thirteenth century, a French knight toured the magnificent city that was then Constantinople and, upon entering one of its fabulous churches, observed a clear full-body image of Jesus Christ gracing an outstretched burial cloth.1 Those who advocate that this sydoine was, in fact, the Shroud of Turin, are challenged to credibly account for the relic’s whereabouts both prior to its exhibition in Byzantium and during the period spanning its disappearance in 1204 to its reemergence some one hundred and fifty years later.2 In this paper, the author suggests that medieval crucifixes, orthodox and heretical, evolved from increased awareness of the sindonic image and that these changes mark the historical path of the Shroud as it traveled in anonymity from East to West. THE ORTHODOX CRUCIFIX By the early third century, the cross was the recognized sign of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire and, over the next several centuries, the use of this symbol became so widespread that it is found on most remnants of the era.3 Perhaps repulsed by the ignominious nature of Christ’s death,4 the earliest Christians did not portray his crucifixion. “The custom of displaying the Redeemer on the Cross began with the close of the sixth century”5 and the first datable manuscript image of the Crucifixion is that found in a Syrian Gospel Book written in 586.6 The sudden rise -
