  • On the Evolution of the Tymbalian Tymbal Organ: Comment On
Cicadina 18 (2019): 17-26 17 Response to “On the evolution of the tymbalian tymbal organ: Comment on “Planthopper bugs use a fast, cyclic elastic recoil mechanism for effective vibrational communication at small body size” by Davranoglou et al. 2019” Leonidas-Romanos Davranoglou1, Alice Cicirello, Beth Mortimer, Graham K. Taylor Zusammenfassung: Kommunikation über Vibrationssignale in der Gruppe der Spitzkopf- zikaden (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha) ist allgegenwärtig, doch war der zugrundeliegende Mechanismus bis zu einem kürzlich erschienenen Artikel von Davranoglou et al. (2019) un- bekannt.

Hemiptera, Fulgoroidea, Issidae, Issini, testes, karyotypes, C-banding, NORs, fluorochrome staining Abstract. Karyotypes and testis structure of 14 species representing 9 genera (Latissus, Bubastia, Falcidius, Kervillea, Mul- santereum, Mycterodus, Scorlupaster, Scorlupella and Zopherisca) of the planthopper tribe Issini (Issidae) are presented. All the karyotypes are illustrated by meiotic and occasionally mitotic figures. The male karyotypes of most of the species analyzed are 2n = 26 + X, the exception being Falcidius limbatus, which has a karyotype of 2n = 24 + neo-XY. The latter is the first report of the neo-XY system in the family Issidae. The species studied are found to be similar in having NORs on the largest pair of autosomes, but differ significantly in the amount and distribution of C-heterochromatin along the chromosomes. In contrast to the conserved chromosome numbers, the highly variable follicle number in the testes suggests rapid evolution of the tribe Issini. On the basis of its specific follicle number, it is proposed that Zopherisca tendinosa skaloula Gnezdilov & Drosopoulos, 2006 be upgrade to a species: Z.

Species Evolutionary Patterns of Host Plant ' geographic and plant patch Use by Delphacid Planthoppers and density and plant diversity on l. The causal mechanisms for Their Relatives 1 and persistence are discussed its such as dispersal ability and ization and persistence. Stephen W. Wilson, Charles Mitter, Robert F. Denno and Michael R. Wilson Introduction Planthoppers (Homoptera: Fulgoroidea) are found on every continent ex cept Antarctica and in all major biomes, including tropical rainforests, deserts, grasslands, and the arctic tundra (O'Brien and Wilson 1985). The more than 9000 described species are divided into 19 families (O'Brien and Wilson 1985; Wheeler and Wilson 1987). All species of Fulgoroidea are phytophagous, sucking fluids from leaves, stems, roots, or fungal hyphae. There are species which feed on woody plants (both angiosperms and gymnosperms), herbs, ferns, and even fungi (O'Brien and Wilson 1985). The largest and most studied family of planthoppers is the Delphacidae which includes more than 2000 species in approximately 300 genera and 6 subfamilies (Asche 1985, 1990). Most continental delphacids are associated with monocots, particularly grasses and sedges (Wilson and O'Brien 1987; Denno and Roderick 1990 ), whereas some species, especially those on oceanic archipelagos, have radiated on dicots as well (Giffard 1922; Zim merman 1948). Their predilection for monocots, phloem-feeding habit, oviposition behavior and ability to transmit pathogens have contributed to the severe pest status of several delphacid species on rice, corn, sugarcane, and several cereal crops (Wilson and O'Brien 1987).

The aim of this study was to obtain information on the karyotypes, testes and ovaries of three fulgoroid families, mainly in the Issidae but also in the Caliscelidae and Acanaloniidae. For the Issidae, the data is for 19 species belonging to 11 genera of the subtribes Issina (2 species, 1 genus), Hysteropterina (14 species, 9 genera) and Agalmatiina (3 species, 2 genera) of the tribe Issini. The male karyotypes are shown to be quite uniform across the tribe, with 2n = 26 + X in all species studied except Latilica macu- lipes (Melichar, 1906) with 2n = 24 + X. The modal karyotype, 2n = 26 + X, matches the most probable ancestral state in the Fulgor- oidea. In the majority of cases the number of seminal follicles in males and ovarioles in females are stable within but fairly variable among the species, the modal value of the follicle number is 10 per testis. Contrary to what might be expected from other fulgoroid families, such as the Dictyopharidae and Delphacidae, the variability in these characters revealed neither regular trends nor evident correspondence with the taxonomy of Issidae.

Received: 21 August 2019; Accepted: 26 September 2019; Published: 29 September 2019 Abstract: Diseases associated with Xylella fastidiosa have been described mostly in North and South America. However, during the last five years, widespread X. fastidiosa infections have been reported in a constrained area of the Apulia region (southern Italy), in olives trees suffering a severe disease, denoted as Olive Quick Decline Syndrome (OQDS). Because many xylem sap-feeding insects can function as vectors for the transmission of this exotic pathogen in EU, several research programs are ongoing to assess the role of candidate vectors in the spread of the infections. Initial investigations identified Philaenus spumarius (L.) as the predominant

In addition, distributional data of the species in Turkey and in the world, and collection localities were given. Among the identified species, Kervillea placophora, Mycterodus confusus (Issidae) and Reptalus panzeri (Cixiidae) were recorded for the first time from the Black Sea Region of Turkey.
