I know we’re all looking forward to summer and the gradual return to more opportunities for events and social gatherings. So let’s hope that BOOK REVIEW 4 June sees the beginning of all that – at least our gardens should be lush and green by the time the sunshine reappears! (By the way, don’t forget to visit the Sensory Garden at Aldeburgh Hospital – a photo from last SAVE OUR BEES 6 year was on the cover of the May issue.) BACK TO THE BIG SCREEN 7 Although audience numbers will still be limited, it’s good to see that there are concerts planned at Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall and Snape Maltings, and that the cinema is open with some of the films we’ve all been waiting GARDENING NOTES 9 for – at last on a big screen. The new outdoor theatre at Thorington should be a great new local attraction, with events planned right through the summer. Their season opens on 18th June, with (appropriately) a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. LIBRARY NEWS 11 Alan and Christine of Aldeburgh’s Amazing Swifts have a busy time coming up as the swifts returned to our skies very early in May. Alan will post an update later in the year, but until then his ‘Meanwhile, CITIZENS ADVICE 13 outdoors’ column will suggest some wildlife to look out for while you’re out and about. On a personal note, this will be my last editorial. I’m putting my red pens back in their box – and ABC RADIO 16 retiring. It has been a great pleasure to contribute to the production of this magazine and in doing so to feel part of the community of Aldeburgh. Louise Gissing at Leiston Press will be your new editor, so please send all contributions, adverts and comments to her from now on at [email protected]. THE LETTERING ARTS TRUST 19 Enjoy summer! In the production of our Tide Collection magazines 16m2 of native woodland is created every month. The Carbon Capture Scheme helps us mitigate our carbon emissions by planting trees right here in the UK. We’ve helped fund the planting of 250,000 already! Each tree planted will grow into a vital carbon store, helping us reduce our environmental impact. The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. Working with Woodland trust helps us to protect the precious wildlife habitat that remains and plant the trees needed to create new homes for creatures big and small. SAXMUNDHAM NEWS SOUTHWOLD ORGAN WOODBRIDGE TALK 3 ALDEBURGH TIMES BOOK REVIEW A LONG PETAL OF THE SEA by Isabel Allende PAPERBACK £8.99 Isabel Allende is the highly acclaimed author of many works of fiction and some non-fiction. Her first novel, The House Of Spirits, was Novel of the Year in her native Chile in 1983 and since then she has gone on to receive similar recognition worldwide. In 2019, she published A Long Petal Of The Sea, a lyrical story of conflict, love and loyalty. In 1939, as the Spanish Civil War rages, young Catalan Victor Dalmau works tirelessly to help the wounded men who are fighting against the forces of General Franco. It is a struggle that costs him his brother and his homeland. Aided by friends, Victor is able to arrange for the safe passage of his brother’s pregnant girlfriend, Roser, to France. That same year, the poet Pablo Neruda persuades the Chilean government to receive a number of refugees from the Spanish Civil War. It is under these circumstances that Victor, Roser and Roser’s son are able to flee the threat of war in Europe and start a new life. Allende’s story is inspired by historical events connected with her own family and is deftly woven with extracts of Neruda’s poetry. Hard-working estate agent | Viewings 7 days a week | Outstanding photography | Achieving record selling prices “We viewed a house that Tim had on the market and were impressed that he stayed afterwards to spend some time chatting with the vendor, a nice touch and I said to my wife, when we go on the market we should contact Tim. We did and we couldn’t have chosen better. Tim is very proactive, listens and is happy to take a call, text or email any time. He always gets back to you and you really feel he is on your team. We would 100% recommend without hesitation.” Neil Stones – Vendor of The Apple House (sold April 2021) “We went to see the Apple House late 2020, and from the off the professionalism and continual contact provided by Tim was without limits. His attention to detail, constant reassurance and support throughout the transaction was 1st class. I would without hesitation, recommend Suffolk Coastal, as an estate agent who provides exceptional customer service.” Tim Maynard – Buyer of The Apple House (sold April 2021) “I wanted to thank you for the successful sale of Mill Farm. It couldn’t have been more efficient and I would highly recommend you.” Barbara Pieterse – Vendor of Mill Farm (sold March 2021) “If you are looking for personal attention, anytime catchup and a proactive approach to purchasing or selling a home, then you will be in the best hands with Tim. Considering we had a short deadline to achieve all the searches and with contact being required to countries outside of the UK. The offer and completion was undertaken in a calm and systematic manner which can only be found in companies where the small details matter. I would always recommend Tim to anyone who is thinking of selling or purchasing a property as you will come away with the feeling that all those issues are being dealt with on your behalf with a competence and understanding that it really matters.” Matt Sealby –Buyer of Mill Farm (sold March 2021).
