Conocarpus erectus (Button Mangrove, Green Buttonwood) Button mangrove is a broadleaf evergreen trees which can withstand drought, salt, heat and high winds.The fruit looks like a dried raspberry or a pine cone. Its flaky brown bark is very attractive. Throughout the year, greenish-white and purple flowers are produced, but they are not noticeable. Due to the high tolerance of heat and drought it is used a lot in hot and arid climate as hedge, street tree or windbreak. Samples were collected from four sampling sites representing area of high traffic density, area future away from traffic and Industrial area. Samples were collected in two stages (May and October) in 2011 for chemical analysis. Samples from village near the city also analyzed for comparison. Based on the results, the stages of leaf sampling did not showed any significant effect on the concentration of the measured heavy metals in leaf samples. Chemical analysis of soil samples at depth of 0-10cm showed that concentration of most of these elements was lower than the maximum recommended levels. Concentrations of measured heavy metals in washed leaves were lower than those of unwashed leaves of Conocarpus and different was significant. In spite of that, there was no significant correlation between the concentrations of heavy metals in washed leaves and soil samples. -

During the dry season, fluorescence values ( Fo) were higher than those observed in rainy season. In addition, Fo decreased during the day in both season and species, except for R. mangle during the dry season. A positive correlation among Fv/Fm and salinity values was obtained for R. mangle and L. Racemosa during the dry and rainy seasons, showing that photosynthetic performance is maintained in both species under high salinities. Carotenoid content was higher in L. Racemosa in both seasons, which represents an additional mechanism against damage to the photosynthetic machinery. -

Plant Succession on Burned Areas in Okefenokee Swamp Following the Fires of 1954 and 1955 EUGENE CYPERT Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and 'Wildlife Waycross, GA 31501 INTRODUCTION IN 1954 and 1955, during an extreme drought, five major fires occurred in Okefenokee Swamp. These fires swept over approximately 318,000 acres of the swamp and 140,000 acres of the adjacent upland. In some areas in the swamp, the burning was severe enough to kill most of the timber and the understory vegetation and burn out pockets in the peat bed. Burns of this severity were usually small and spotty. Over most of the swamp, the burns were surface fires which generally killed most of the underbrush but rarely burned deep enough into the peat bed to kill the larger trees. In many places the swamp fires swept over lightly, burning surface duff and killing only the smaller underbrush. Some areas were missed entirely. On the upland adjacent to the swamp, the fires were very de structive, killing most of the pine timber on the 140,000 acres burned over. The destruction of pine forests on the upland and the severe 199 EUGENE CYPERT burns in the swamp caused considerable concern among conservation ists and neighboring land owners. It was believed desirable to learn something of the succession of vegetation on some of the more severely burned areas. Such knowl edge would add to an understanding of the ecology and history of the swamp and to an understanding of the relation that fires may have to swamp wildlife. -

This study was designed to document the range-wide population impacts to LWD, as well as the patterns of mortality and regeneration in Persea ecosystems. I used Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data from the U.S. Forest Service to estimate Persea borbonia (red bay) populations from 2003 to 2011 to see if any decline could be observed since the introduction of LWD causal agents. -

LOPEZ, Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843-2258, USA ABSTRACT We used nucleotide sequence data from a mitochondrial DNA fragment to characterize variation within the endangered Lower Keys marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris hefneri). We observed 5 unique mitochondrial haplotypes across different sampling sites in the Lower Florida Keys, USA. Based on the frequency of these haplotypes at different geographic locations and relationships among haplotypes, we observed 2 distinct clades or groups of sampling sites (western and eastern clades). These 2 groups showed low levels of gene flow. Regardless of their origin, marsh rabbits from the Lower Florida Keys can be separated into 2 genetically distinct management units, which should be considered prior to implementation of translocations as a means of offsetting recent population declines. Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan for Clearwater Harbor and Saint Joseph Sound Prepared for: Pinellas County Department of Environment and Infrastructure Prepared by: Janicki Environmental, Inc. & December, 2011 FOREWORD This document is provided in fulfillment of Task 10 of the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan for Saint Joseph Sound and Clearwater Harbor; Contract No: 089-0222-P. PREFACE Clearwater Harbor, Saint Joseph Sound, and their watersheds are collectively referred to in this document as the “CHSJS”. The CHSJS contains extensive and highly valued natural resource attributes. The Pinellas County Department of Environment and Infrastructure and the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) recognized the need to develop a Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan to summarize existing information on the status and trends of natural resources, synthesize existing management efforts, and establish goals, actions, strategies, and priorities to ensure future stewardship of natural resources within the CHSJS. With funding support from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, SWFWMD, Pinellas County, and several municipal governments within the watershed, this report, the Clearwater Harbor and Saint Joseph Sound Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan, is a culmination of those efforts to develop protection and restoration strategies to ensure future stewardship of CHSJS natural resources. This document comes at a unique period in Florida’s history. The United States economy is in the midst of the worst recession since the 1930’s. State and national budget deficits have resulted in dramatic reductions in funding on federal, state, and local levels. Funding has been eliminated for management of several of the Florida’s aquatic preserves including those in the CHSJS and budgets for environmental restoration and land acquisition programs has been drastically reduced. -
