Letters from Ankara Scriptal Change in Turkey and Ireland in 1928 MATHEW STAUNTON and OLIVIER DECOTTIGNIES Université de Paris 3 – Sorbonne Nouvelle We must not give anyone reason to doubt that we stand for national progress, or reason to suspect that we are out of sympathy with anything that is good in the spirit of the age, or even that we are unnecessarily hostile to things which, if not positively admirable, are harmless and characteristic of modern trends. Our object is not to turn back the hands of the clock or to restore social customs, institutions or preferences which have been generally abandoned by other nations and which properly belong to the past. [...] We do not want to make our people fundamentally different from other present- day Europeans, but only to make them as Irish as the people of France are French; the people of Italy Italian; the people of Denmark Danish; or the people of Sweden Swedish.1 Ernest Blythe’s 1949 presidential address to the Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge2 was a passionate appeal for Irish speakers to embrace modernity. Convinced that “pedantic cranks”, “irrational sticklers for the archaic”, and “archaicising faddists”3 were hindering the Irish language movement and even embarrassing the Irish nation, he argued that the Irish people could enjoy their linguistic heritage without isolating themselves from their European neighbours. The Belfast Agreement (1998) brought about new constitutional arrangements between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom, and a new structure of governance within Northern Ireland. Designed, amongst other aims, to end the war in Northern Ireland that had lasted almost thirty years, the agreement was arguably the most important political development within Ireland since the declaration of the Irish Republic in 1948. -

Early Medieval Ireland Over 1500 years ago, Irish people began to learn about God and became Christians. Some people became priests and monks and built monasteries and churches for people to come and pray at. At these early church sites, you can also find Ogham Stones. These are large stones engraved with the earliest known writing in Ireland. Ogham Code Did you know? Most Ogham stones can still be seen in their original location today. Ogham stones are standing stones that are engraved with the earliest known form of writing in Ireland. Each of the letters, or characters, represent a sound in the early Irish language. Many of them date to between the 4th and 6th century AD and they are mainly found in counties Kerry, Cork, and Waterford. How are letters written in Ogham? Each letter is made etching a line across a central line. When they were carved on a standing stone, the edge of the stone acted as the central line for each letter. Most Ogham Stones have the names of people and their parents and were used to remember or commemorate a person. To read an Ogham Stone, start at the bottom at the left-hand side and read up, around, and down the other side. -
