The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications by Helen Patterson A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Helen Patterson 2013 The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications Helen Patterson Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This dissertation examines the hymns of the Antiphonary of Bangor (AB) (Antiphonarium Benchorense, Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana C. 5 inf.) and considers its musical implications in medieval Ireland. Neither an antiphonary in the true sense, with chants and verses for the Office, nor a book with the complete texts for the liturgy, the AB is a unique Irish manuscript. Dated from the late seventh-century, the AB is a collection of Latin hymns, prayers and texts attributed to the monastic community of Bangor in Northern Ireland. Given the scarcity of information pertaining to music in early Ireland, the AB is invaluable for its literary insights. Studied by liturgical, medieval, and Celtic scholars, and acknowledged as one of the few surviving sources of the Irish church, the manuscript reflects the influence of the wider Christian world. The hymns in particular show that this form of poetical expression was significant in early Christian Ireland and have made a contribution to the corpus of Latin literature. Prompted by an earlier hypothesis that the AB was a type of choirbook, the chapters move from these texts to consider the monastery of Bangor and the cultural context from which the manuscript emerges. As the Irish peregrini are known to have had an impact on the continent, and the AB was recovered in ii Bobbio, Italy, it is important to recognize the hymns not only in terms of monastic development, but what they reveal about music. -

Since logistics is not really tangible from offi- cial statistics this study series was designed in 1995 at Fraunhofer SCS to fill this gap. Even if logistics market assessments are carried out now this long time, our interest and curiosity about what the future will bring for logistics is undiminished. And it is more exciting than ever to analyze logistics. The European logistics sector has reached a size of € 1,120 bn. for the total expenditure on logistics activities carried out in 2018. And even if the transported quantities flowing through the logistics systems increased only moderately the logistics sector could grow by 3.7 percent in 2018 for the whole of Europe because shipments are still increasing because ever lighter parcels flowing through the logistics networks. Even with hardly higher ton- nages in the overall system, lucrative growth for logistics can result, as the supply chains extend more and more to the end customers, resulting in more filigree flows of goods that are more complex to deliver. Manufactum Schließt Sich Der Initiative „Cotton Made in Africa“ An

Juni 2017 Manufactum schließt sich der Initiative „Cotton made in Africa“ an Manufactum bietet erstmals Baumwollkleidung mit der „Cotton made in Africa“-Auszeichnung an und unterstützt so den ressourcenschonenden Baumwollanbau sowie die Verbesserung der Arbeits-und Lebensbedingungen von Kleinbauern und Fabrikarbeitern in Afrika. Die Initiative „Cotton made in Africa“ (CmiA) setzt sich seit ihrer Gründung 2005 für den Schutz der Umwelt sowie für bessere Lebens- und Arbeitsbedingungen für über eine halbe Million Kleinbauern und Fabrikarbeiter in Afrika ein, die am Anfang der Modeindustrie stehen. Mittlerweile ist CmiA das weltweit führende Label für nachhaltig produzierte Baumwolle in Afrika. Auch das Warenhaus der guten Dinge hat sich nun dieser Initiative angeschlossen. „Wir freuen uns, mit Manufactum einen zuverlässigen Partner gewonnen zu haben. Durch ihre Partnerschaft tragen sie dazu bei, den Baumwollbauern und Fabrikarbeitern in Afrika sowie der Umwelt ein Lächeln zu schenken“, so Tina Stridde, Geschäftsführerin der Aid by Trade Foundation, Trägerorganisation von Cotton made in Africa. Zum Start der Kooperation gibt es zwei Unisex-Modelle: Ein T-Shirt in gerader Passform sowie eine klassische Kapuzenjacke. Beide Artikel sind in den Farben Oliv und Blaugrün erhältlich und werden zu 100% aus Baumwolle gefertigt. Die Produkte sind seit Mai in den Warenhäusern und im Onlineshop von Manufactum erhältlich. Weitere Produkte in Kooperation mit CmiA sind in Planung. MEDIEVAL AND EARLY RENAISSANCE Anonymous (French) Illuminated page from a Psalter in Latin, ca. 1200-1210 Ink, Pigments and gold on parchment 2002.15 Gilbreath-McLorn Fund This page comes from a Psalter, a bound collection of the 150 Psalms, which provided medieval readers with tools for private and communal devotions. Stylistically, this leaf resembles other manuscripts produced in Northeastern France, Paris and England during the reign of the French monarch Philip Augustus (1179-1223). The script is written in a Gothic liturgical hand, and the large illuminated initials and painted line-endings were created at the same time as the text. The Verso linear penwork in-fills and flourishes were probably added after 1250. The high quality of the decoration, together with the lavish use of gold and lapis blue, indicates that this page comes from a book made for a member of the royal court or a high- ranking cleric. These manuscripts contained psalms and prayers for recitation and devotions throughout the eight canonical hours of the day. In Books of Hours devoted to the Virgin Mary, an image of The Adoration of the Magi traditionally accompanies the text for sext, to be read during the mid-afternoon. -

Abstract This thesis is concerned with the monastic rules that were written in seventh century Iberia and the relationship that existed between them and their intended, contemporary, audience. It aims to investigate this relationship from three distinct, yet related, perspectives: physical, literary and philological. After establishing the historical and historiographical background of the texts, the thesis investigates firstly the presence of a monastic rule as a physical text and its role in a monastery and its relationship with issues of early medieval literacy. It then turns to look at the use of literary techniques and structures in the texts and their relationship with literary culture more generally at the time. Finally, the thesis turns to issues of the language that the monastic rules were written in and the relationship between the spoken and written registers not only of their authors, but also of their audiences. -
