College, Barasat, Kolkata 700124, India *Corresponding author, E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Keeping in mind the immense commercial and pharmacological importance of the rare aphrodisiac herb safed musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum Sant et Fern), the present investigation describes the development of a rapid and efficient protocol for direct plant regeneration from leaf explants of two populations of C. borivilianum collected from different agroclimatic zones of India. The induction of shoot initials was achieved on both Murashige and Skoog’s (MS) and Gamborg’s basal media supplemented with varying levels of 6-benzyladenine (1.11 to 8.90 μM) and thidiazuron (1.14 to 9.08 μM). MS basal medium supplemented with 4.54 μM thidiazuron was found ideal for shoot induction and gave rise to numerous shoot primordia within three weeks without any callus phase. Seperation of shoot clumps and their subsequent transfer to MS basal medium supplemented with 4.54 μM thidiazuron resulted in differentiation of more than 90% of the shoot initials into well developed shoots. Healthy shoots were rooted on half strength MS supplemented with varying concentrations of indole-3-acetic acid (2.28 to 11.42 μM), indole-3-butyric acid (1.97 to 9.80 μM) and naphthalene acetic acid (2.7 to 10.8 μM). -

This study was carried out to reveal the vascular plant diversity of Çaltepe and Çeletepe. During 2015−2018, 2340 plant specimens were collected from the research area and 363 genera and 767 taxa belonging to 81 families were determined. Of all the collected taxa, 66 are endemic and endemism rate is %8.60. The IUCN threat categories of endemic and rare plants at global level are as follows: 1 taxon in “CR” category, as well as 4 taxa “EN”, 4 taxa “VU”, 9 taxa “NT”, and 45 taxa “LC”. Also, 3 rare taxa are found in the “VU” category, as well as 1 rare taxon in the “DD” category at regional level. 56 taxa are new records for the province of Bolu. The largest families in the study area are as follows: Asteraceae 97 taxa (%12.65), Fabaceae 62 taxa (%8.08), Lamiaceae 51 taxa (%6.65), Rosaceae 44 taxa (%5.74), Poaceae 37 taxa (%4.82), Brassicaceae 35 taxa (%4.56), Caryophyllaceae 32 taxa (%4.17), Apiaceae 28 taxa (%3.65), Boraginaceae 27 taxa (%3.52) and Orchidaceae 24 taxa (%3.13). The distribution of taxa into phytogeographic regions are as follows: 234 taxa (%30.50) Euro-Siberian, 64 taxa (%8.34) Mediterranean, 46 taxa (%5.99) Irano-Turanian, and 423 taxa (%55.15) multiregional and/or unknown. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This study analyses phylogenetic and morphological relationships regarding the taxonomy of Digitalis sect. Globiflorae. Progesterone 5β-reductase (P5βR) is an important enzyme for cardenolide biosynthesis as well as a novel genetic marker inferring phylogenetic and biogeographic relationships in many plant species. Phylogenetic inference was conducted using the neighbor-joining method and maximum likelihood model on cDNA sequences of highly conserved P5βR (97.0–99.6%) isolated from members of sect. Globiflorae, including Digitalis trojana, D. cariensis, D. lamarckii, D. lanata subsp. lanata, D. ferruginea subsp. ferruginea and D. ferruginea subsp. schischkinii. Our phylogenetic and morphological results largely support Davis’ system of the genus Digitalis in the Flora of Turkey. We propose the existence of four species and three subspecies in sect. Globiflorae for Turkey.
