Ancient Iran and the Premodern Persianate World, Graduate Specialization 1 Ancient Iran and the Premodern Persianate World, Graduate Specialization Matthew P. Canepa, Director 2000 Humanities Gateway 949-824-3532 [email protected] The graduate specialization in Ancient Iran and the Premodern Persianate World is University of California, Irvine’s interdisciplinary platform for graduate study in premodern Iranian studies. It is designed to provide Ph.D. students with the interdisciplinary training they need to conduct advanced research in the art, archaeology, architecture, history, literatures, and religions of Iran, as well as those peoples, regions, and empires whose destinies were intertwined with Iran, or impacted by its cultures (e.g. ancient Greece and Rome, Armenia, or Islamic Western or South Asia). UCI boasts unparalleled faculty and programmatic resources for the study of ancient Iran and the wider premodern Persianate world, including the highest concentration of endowed chairs in ancient Iranian studies of any North American institution. With especial faculty strengths in ancient Iran, the specialization’s broader historical scope encompasses the Bronze Age cultures of the Iranian Plateau, Mesopotamia, and Central Asia up to the early modern empires of the Mughals, Safavids, and Ottomans (ca. 3500 BCE – ca. 1740 CE). The specialization’s broad conception of premodern Iranian Studies is paralleled in, and supported by, the extensive programming of UCI’s Samuel Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture (https:// www.humanities.uci.edu/persianstudies/), which provides the primary focus of the specialization’s graduate workshop. Programme Aims: What will the programme allow you to achieve? 1. Critically assess the historical development of Iranian society, economics and culture within the context of the wider west Asian area. 2. Appreciate the complexity of the history and cultural make up of Iran. 3. Analyse Iran in accordance with an interdisciplinary curriculum and a flexible study programme. 4. Enhance their knowledge about the religious and politico-cultural influences affecting contemporary Iran and the region it is embedded in. 5. The programme allows students to cultivate or further develop a basic expertise in particular aspects of Iranian Studies. 6. The programme allows students to choose modules that meet their own needs, with respect to their interest in Iran and future career plans. 7. The programme allows students to develop their abilities to synthesize information, to think critically, to manage a complex research project and to present their results in verbal and written form. 8. HIST 6824 Modern Iran Rome 459 Professor M.A. Atkin Wednesdays: 5:10-7:00 Office: Phillips 340 Spring 2014 Phone: 994-6426 e-mail: [email protected] Office hours: M & W: 1:30-3:00 and and by appointment Course Description: This seminar will take a thematic approach to the period from about the year 1800 (when a state with roughly the dimensions of modern Iran emerged) to 1989 (the end of the Khomeini era.) Recurrent themes of the course include problems of state building in the context of domestic weaknesses and external pressure, ideas about reform and modernization, the impact of reform by command from above, the role of religion in politics, and major upheavals, such as the Constitutional Revolution of 1906, the oil nationalization crisis of 1951-1953, and the Islamic Revolution of 1978-1979. The specific topics and readings are listed below. The seminar meetings are structured on the basis of reading and discussion for each week’s topic. Further information on the format is in the section “Course Readings” below. In addition to the weekly reading and discussion, students are expected to write a term paper which draws on their readings for the course. The term papers are due on Monday, April 28, 2014.) Details of the paper will be provided separately. A student who already has a strong background in the history of modern Iran may prefer to focus on a research paper. Anyone who is interested in that option should inform me of that at the end of the first meeting. Early in the semester, such students should consult with me to define a suitable research project. -

Also, Elena Andreeva and Afshin Marashi joined the Council. I am very grateful to the collective team of colleagues on the board for their commitment to our society. Preparation for the forthcoming Eleventh Biennial Conference of The International Society for Iranian Studies is underway and the head of the Conference Committee, Florian Schwarz, and Programme Committee Chair Camron Amin together with their colleagues on both committees are doing their best to make the Eleventh Biennial another successful conference, this time in Vienna. I look forward to seeing all our members at the beginning of August in Vienna. Iranian Studies, volume 45, number 2, March 2012 Touraj Daryaee Food, Purity and Pollution: Zoroastrian Views on the Eating Habits of Others This article discusses the use of food as a mode of differentiation and identification according to Zoroastrian Middle Persian and Persian texts of the late antique period. In these texts, the list of foods consumed by Arabs and Indians are juxtaposed with that of the Iranian diet, and each group is given anthropological treatment. The article contends that the Zoroastrian dietary law, based on the Middle Persian texts, provides a mode of purity and impurity vis-à-vis others. Finally, the article touches upon the idea of moderation and the consumption of wine as dealt with in some Middle Persian sources. Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are. Brillat-Savarin1 Different societies have different codes and laws and dietary restrictions with regard to food consumption. These codes and laws reflect a set of values which usually dis- tinguishes one civilization from another. These codes, rules, and laws which provide a collective mentality are slow to change,2 even when there is the adoption of a new set of religious laws as in the case of the Iranian civilization in the medieval period. Animal Headdresses on the Sealings of the Bactrian Documents Judith A. Lerner, New York Introduction The so-called Bactrian documents from northern Afghanistan, consisting of le- gal and economic texts as well as letters, have contributed to our greater under- standing of the region between the 4th and 8th centuries. As a crossroads for trade and a theater for conquest, during this time span the region had come under the successive domination by Kushano-Sasanians, Kidarites, Hephtalites and Turks. Nicholas Sims-Williams first reported on the Bactrian documents in 1996 and since then, as the number of documents has grown, has continued to enlighten us on their contents and implications, thereby expanding our knowledge of the language, history, religion and culture of Afghanistan in this period. Some of the documents still have their original sealings: small lumps of clay that bear the impressions of the contractors’, witnesses’ and letter-writers’ seals. The majority of the sealings, however, are not associated with the documents they originally sealed. While more than 150 Bactrian documents are now known, there are many more clay sealings in various collections, unfortunately separated from what they sealed, but which – from their shape and fabric and the style and iconography of the seals impressed on them – can be considered part of this cor- pus. As an art historian, I have been privileged to study the sealings in two major collections, those of Prof. N. D. Khalili (London) and Mr. Aman ur Rahman (Islamabad/Dubai), and in this endeavor to work closely with Nicholas Sims- Williams who has published the documents in the Khalili Collection and will be publishing the inscriptions on the sealings in the Rahman Collection.1 His linguistic knowledge and insights, and his generosity in sharing them, have been critical to my stylistic and iconographic analysis of the sealings.
