Lewis A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2008 Committee: Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin ii ABSTRACT Jeffrey Brown Advisor Through their representations of torture, 24 and Battlestar Galactica build on a wider political discourse. Although 24 began production on its first season several months before the terrorist attacks, the show has become a contested space where opinions about the war on terror and related political and military adventures are played out. The producers of Battlestar Galactica similarly use the space of television to raise questions and problematize issues of war. Together, these two television shows reference a long history of discussion of what role torture should play not just in times of war but also in a liberal democracy. This project seeks to understand the multiple ways that ideological discourses have played themselves out through representations of torture in these television programs. This project begins with a critique of the popular discourse of torture as it portrayed in the popular news media. Using an ideological critique and theories of televisual realism, I argue that complex representations of torture work to both challenge and reify dominant and hegemonic ideas about what torture is and what it does. This project also leverages post-structural analysis and critical gender theory as a way of understanding exactly what ideological messages the programs’ producers are trying to articulate.

Reporting organization The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a Quaker faith based organization that promotes lasting peace with justice, as a practical expression of faith in action. AFSC’s interest in prison reform is strongly influenced by Quaker (Religious Society of Friends) activism addressing prison conditions as informed by the imprisonment of Friends for their beliefs and actions in the 17th and 18th centuries.     Highest and Best Use Analysis Redevelopment site located at 5801 and 5809 Annapolis Road Cheverly, MD Prince Georges County Redevelopment Authority | February 2018 www.greendooradvisors.com Executive Summary Green Door Advisors (GDA) was retained by Prince George’s County Redevelopment Authority (Redevelopment Authority) to conduct a highest and best use market analysis for a proposed development at 5801 and 5809 Annapolis Road within the town limits of Cheverly, MD. The Redevelopment Authority previously issued an RFP for development of this site, and it was planned for the development of 244 luxury two-bedroom condominium units priced from $300,000 to $350,000, but the selected developer was unable to execute the development agreement. In 2013, GDA completed a residential market and financial analysis to help determine whether the original disposition agreement was viable given the residential market, it was determined that the original program was not financially feasible given market conditions. Now that the Redevelopment Authority is preparing to issue a new solicitation for redevelopment of the subject property, GDA has completed a follow-up study to determine the highest and best use for the site based upon current market conditions. This study examines the market opportunity for multiple potential product types including hotel, rental and for-sale housing, office, and retail development.     PUBLIC POLICY ACTION PAPER Faith in a Box: Entertainment Television and Religion September 25, 2003-September 24, 2004 January 2005 National Religious Broadcasters 9510 Technology Drive Manassas, Virginia 20110 Executive Summary According to a 2003 Harris Poll, 90% of Americans express belief in God. Television is gradually catching up with this statistic by including religious subject matter in more of the programs that air on its medium (one treatment per hour in 2003/2004 versus one every 3.3 hours in 1997). But the quality of those portrayals is cause for concern. In this sixth Parents Television Council study looking at the treatment of religion on primetime television, an entire year of programming was analyzed. In 2,385.5 hours of programming 2,344 treatments of religion were found. The previous study, done in 1997, found 551 treatments of religion in its 1,800 hours studied. Overall, negative depictions of religion surpassed those that are positive by a slim margin. However, depictions of aspects affiliated with organized religion were found to be overwhelmingly negative. The question, then, is does television’s treatment of religion truly reflect the viewpoints of the majority of Americans. A Gallup analysis done in 2003 found that 60% of Americans consider religion very important to them, while another 24% say it is fairly important. The Gallup poll found that roughly two-thirds of adult Americans consider themselves a member of a specific church or synagogue. Significantly, they also found that most Americans attend some sort of religious service once a month, at least; and a third of Americans do so on a weekly basis.

Hits Under Armour With TM Suit By Aaron Vehling Law360, New York (March 06, 2015, 2:07 PM ET) -- Hydro Clothing, an apparel brand featured on several VH1 reality shows featuring former Public Enemy rapper Flavor Flav, on Thursday sued Under Armour Inc. in a California federal court, alleging that Under Armour’s similarly named products infringe on Hydro’s trademarks. Hydro Clothing, a name under which Cohen International Inc., does business, says in its suit that Under Armour’s line of shirts, board shorts, pants, hoodies and other apparel under the name “Hydro” and “Hydro Armour” is deceptive and likely to confuse consumers. The complaint also names Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc., which sells Under Armour’s clothing line. “[Under Armour]’s unauthorized use of the Hydro mark is a trademark use which is likely to confuse the reasonably prudent consumer into believing that [Under Armour]’s infringing apparel products are produced by Cohen,” the complaint says. “On information and belief, Dick’s and [other] retailers are continuing to sell [Under Armour] products bearing the Hydro mark, despite being requested in writing by Cohen to cease their infringement of the Hydro mark.” Before filing the lawsuit, Hydro Clothing also sent Under Armour directly a cease-and- desist notice, but the apparel company continues to promote and sell products under the Hydro mark, the complaint says.

Anyone who passed the civil service examination yesterday can kill me today with complete immunity. I’ve lived with repression every moment of my life, a re- pression so formidable that any movement on my part can only bring relief, the respite of a small victory or the release of death.1 xactly 140 years after Nat Turner led a slave rebellion in southeastern Virginia, the U.S. carceral state attempted to silence another influential EBlack captive revolutionary: the imprisoned intellectual George Jackson. When guards at California’s San Quentin Prison shot Jackson to death on August 21, 1971, allegedly for attempting an escape, the acclaimed novelist James Baldwin responded with a prescience that would linger in the African American literary imagination: “No Black person will ever believe that George Jackson died the way they tell us he did.”2 Baldwin had long been an advocate for Jackson, and Jackson—as evident from his identification with the slave in the block quotation above—had long been a critic of social control practices in the criminal justice system reminiscent of slavery. Jackson was a well-read Black freedom fighter, political prisoner, Black Panther Party field marshal, and radical social theorist who organized a prisoners’ liberation movement while serving an indeterminate sentence of one year to life for his presumed complicity in a seventy-dollar gas station robbery.
