The highlight of the season was the World Bowls event being staged in Christchurch, with Burnside Bowling Club as headquarters (3 greens). The greens at Bowls Papanui (2 greens), Fendalton Bowling Club (2 greens) and the Centre Green (1 green) were also involved. A huge thank you from the Board of Bowls Canterbury to the above clubs and their many willing volunteers. This World Bowls event was the recipient of the ‘Sport Canterbury Event of the Year’ at their annual awards night. The Bowls Canterbury Centre Programme was successfully completed, highlighted again by the two Finals Days (28th/29th January and 22nd/23rd April). A huge thanks to Adrian, Mel, Katie and Emily in the Centre Office. The Programme for the 2017/2018 season will be in place by the time this report is read.

True, the men have not won a gold medal at the event since the 1976 whitewash of the world at Zoo Lake, but SA’s women have twice won the event and generally shine. This me, however, for some unfathomable reason, the men struggled throughout; the women threatened to do well in all events, but again, disappoinngly faded, leaving only the triples, who won bronze, to play near to potenal. This does not in any way suggest the Proteas played badly. Far from it, they are the best we have, deserving their places. But those armchair crics shoung for heads to roll do not see it that way (rugby, soccer, swimming, golf are treated much the same) and express the country’s insaable demand for success. Never mind the clichés and the “wise” nodding heads, other naons are allowed to play well; in bowls, if club players think clearly, they know a rub, a wick, a minute measure can change the nature of a game in a heartbeat; few codes see acute score change as can occur in a single head of bowls.     Gold and silver for classy Proteas By Alan Simmonds, Media Officer, Bowls SA Gold in the men’s trips and silver in the women’s fours went to South Africa’s Proteas at Cardiff’s Penylan club, with Israel, England, Wales also going gold in the Atlantic Championships. Yesterday was the climax of the event’s first week – the past six days of the championships featured 25 countries from the European, African and South American theatres at four host clubs around the Welsh capital. The reverse of this week’s programme of men’s pairs and triples along with women’s singles and fours gets under way today. In the blue riband women’s singles gold medal match it was experienced Ruti Gilor from Israel who prevailed over pocket-sized Guernsey dynamo Lucy Beere, winning 21-15 after 24 ends. The first half of the 21 shots-up final was a dour affair with scores peeled at 11-apiece after 14 ends. However, the excitement level lifted over the following 10 when the 64-year-old Israeli star moved up a gear to claim the points on eight ends adding 14 shots to four as she powered to victory. England’s Jamie Walker and Steve Mitchinson achieved a great result at Penylan when they clinched the men’s pairs gold medal, beating Scottish superstars Alex Marshall and Paul Foster in their 18-end final. Earlier today the much-awaited men’s triples final saw a rejuvenated South African trio, under the astute guidance of hard man Billy Radloff, topple Scotland’s irrepressible Commonwealth Games champions Ronnie Duncan, Derek Oliver and Darren Burnett.

    Glorious gold for Colleen/Nici and team By Alan Simmonds, Media Officer, Bowls South Africa Superb Protea lawn bowlers Colleen Piketh (Eden) and Nici Neal (Sables) retained their title and a gold medal with a scintillating victory in the women’s pairs at the Atlantic Championship finals in Cardiff, Wales. The women’s quintet of Piketh, Neal, Esmé Kruger (Gauteng North, Jacqui Janse van Rensburg Johannesburg BA), Anneke Snyman (Boland) won the trophy for best overall. Added to yesterday’s gold the women won silver in the fours, bronze in the triples and fourth place in the singles … outstanding. Scotland’s men took the overall gold medal. The seasoned pairs combination outclassed a plucky Guernsey duo of Rose Ogier and Lucy Beere winning on the 16th end 17-4 after not conceding a shot for the first 12 ends. Playing at HQ, Penylan, the green and gold duo were in top form, something they had shown throughout the gruelling qualifying rounds and the quarter and semi-finals. They repeated their efforts from the last Atlantic event in Cyprus. But it was England who then took centre-stage. Their action man Jamie Walker won a second gold of the championships – added to last week’s pairs with Steve Mitchinson – when he outgunned Scotland’s Darren Burnett to win the blue ribbon singles in a repeat of his 2015 success in Cyprus. The English women began the rush when their triples team coasted to victory in the morning, beating a gallant Scotland trio by 10 shots. England was imperious when they powered to victory in the women’s triples final, winning 23-13.

It was just a two page publication listing the upcoming week’s play on the greens at Birkenhead, a couple of short information like articles and a rundown on one of the Club’s sponsors. The very first article was written by Carole Fredrick “Match Com- mittee Matters” outlining the requirements and obligations of singles and marking, de- faulters and requested a member for the match committee as Colin Spence had re- signed. The first edition the Battle of the Bridge, between Auckland Bowls and Bowls North Harbour, got a mention as it was played on the greens at Birkenhead and featured a number of Birkenhead members. Jo Utting won the Club Membership draw the previ- ous Friday, picking up a cool $100. Friday nights back then came with free nibbles around 6pm, the Joker 500 didn’t exist then. Today’s 200th edition goes out to over 350 individuals, is posted on the Club’s website and facebook page. It is read throughout New Zealand and offshore in Australia, Samoa, Wales, England, it reaches into many clubs, offices and into Bowls New Zea- land’s national office itself, with New Zealand CEO Mark Cameron saying he enjoys the regular Wednesday read.
