3 PRESIDENTS ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30th APRIL 2017

With my second term as Chairman of the Board coming to an end I can look back on another successful season for Bowls Canterbury.

The highlight of the season was the World Bowls event being staged in Christchurch, with Burnside Bowling Club as headquarters (3 greens). The greens at Bowls Papanui (2 greens), Fendalton Bowling Club (2 greens) and the Centre Green (1 green) were also involved. A huge thank you from the Board of Bowls Canterbury to the above clubs and their many willing volunteers. This World Bowls event was the recipient of the ‘Sport Canterbury Event of the Year’ at their annual awards night.

The Bowls Canterbury Centre Programme was successfully completed, highlighted again by the two Finals Days (28th/29th January and 22nd/23rd April). A huge thanks to Adrian, Mel, Katie and Emily in the Centre Office.

The Programme for the 2017/2018 season will be in place by the time this report is read. A committee of ten enthusiastic club members have met under the guidance of our Events Manager, Katie Griffiths, and alterations have been made. Clubs were asked to submit ideas/recommendations/remits for discussion. Disappointingly only five clubs (Belfast, Bowls Papanui, Burnside, Elmwood and Redcliffs Mt Pleasant) used this forum to advance the game in the Centre.

Emily Robbins, our Youth and Community Bowls Coordinator has yet again worked tirelessly this season, visiting 23 schools which had a total participation of 6,540. With a similar programme in place forthe coming season we are doing our best to increase our playing numbers in the future.

Sports Awards This year we put in seven nominations at the 2016 Nexia New Zealand Canterbury Sports Awards in the following categories:

AWARD NOMINEE Administrator Bill Fowlie Club Burnside Bowling Club Coach Raelene Peters Official Ann Wright Event World Bowls 2016 Sports Man Kerry Becks Sports Woman

These nominees were selected based on their performance in the 2016 year (January-December). It was a great night with two winners for Bowls Canterbury in ‘Event of the Year’ – World Bowls, and ‘Club of the Year’ – Burnside Bowling Club.

5 PRESIDENTS ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30th APRIL 2017

Board Appointments Alan Dunlop has resigned from the Board. Thank you Alan for your time and service. We welcome Graham Russell to the Board.

Staff It is with regret we have the departure of Adrian Robins as our CEO. Adrian stamped his authority on the position right from the start (December 2013) and we are now benefitting from his wisdom and expertise. Adrian, from the Board a huge thank you for all your efforts on our behalf.

Adrian’s expertise will not be totally lost however, as he is staying on as our Financial Controller. Adrian, we wish you and Julie all the best in your partial retirement.

Our new CEO is Mel Mather, who was appointed by the Board as from May 1st, 2017. This was a unanimous decision. Congratulations Mel.

In conclusion, I wish to thank all those who have supported myself and Bowls Canterbury during the 2016/2017 season.

For and on behalf of the Board,

Brian Barker Chairman

6 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30th APRIL 2017

Sadly, this will be my last Annual Report as I decided to retire at the end of April and have moved to a small cottage in Waimate with my wife, dog and cat. However, it is not a complete goodbye as yet, as I have agreed to remain on a 2-year contract as Sales and Finance Manager with responsibilities for overseeing the Bowls Canterbury Shop and also providing accountancy support. I wish to thank all of those clubs, bowlers, staff, volunteers, sponsors, trusts and the Board who have supported me during my three and a half years in office – a difficult job would have been made impossible without your wholehearted encouragement and backing.

Playing Programme: We introduced a new competition for Post Xmas Interclub in the form of the popular Australian Pennants with the men competing as a 3 x 4’s and the women as a 2 x 4’s – both competitions were thoroughly enjoyed by the few Clubs that entered these competitions and hopefully more will get involved next season.

Overall playing numbers were increased over the season with the exception of the Champion of Champions Event which was considerably down on the previous season – mainly because 4 x Clubs decided not to enter (though one was because of the St Albans Park/Canterbury merger).

 Pre Xmas Interclub – total numbers up by 23 an increase of +1.11%  Post Xmas Interclub – total numbers up by 177 an increase of + 9.2%  Centre Events – total numbers up by 3 an increase of +0.33%  Champion of Champions Events – total numbers down by 75 a decrease of -10.96%

The proposed Tournament Review Panel was established and they have come up with changes for the forthcoming season – hopefully this will continue the upward trend and we continue to provide competitions for all levels of bowlers.

The Finals weekends for this season for both the Centre Events and the Champion of Champions Events were put out for tender and Woolston Park Bowling Club won both tenders and held both of these events and did a tremendous job – many thanks to the Club and all of their willing volunteers – they did us proud.

7 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30th APRIL 2017

Financials: The Annual Accounts for this year show a surplus of $20k+ mainly due to the continued support of grant providers and the growth in the retail sales through our Bowls Canterbury shop which grossed over $120k this last year. We express our thanks for all of the Clubs and bowlers who have supported our shop, these monies received are put back into bowls development instead of going out of our game, and we hope that you continue to support this venture. We also added this year an online option and have received many orders from throughout New Zealand from both the South and North Islands. We have also introduced Club Deals and also a Loyalty Programme that also benefits our Clubs.

The Centre still relies heavily on outside funding to maintain our operations and this is getting increasingly harder to obtain the required amounts but we understand the predicament of the grant providers and are extremely grateful for all of the support that they give to Bowls Canterbury.

The Draft Budget has been sent out to Clubs and shows a deficit of $40k+ as we do not anticipate receiving funding, other than what has been received and is being expensed monthly, however, we should expect to receive some funding and if we receive continued support through the shop we would anticipate a similar result to this year.

Centre Green: The Centre Green continues to be used more frequently by established bowlers, youth and schools and the general community and we expect this trend to continue.

The highlight of the season was part hosting the World Bowls Event in November/December and we received many thanks for our hospitality and the green itself. I would like to congratulate our new greenkeeper, Terry Stewart, who in his first year produced a marvelous playing surface, with great help from Glen Miller. I would also like to pay homage to all of the Clubs and volunteers that helped make this event memorable, the feedback from across the world has been all positive with the many overseas visitors enjoying their experience.

I would also like to thank Terry Stewart and Paddy Brandon for their sterling efforts in improving the surrounds and buildings at the Centre Green in preparation for the World Bowls and the other volunteers that helped, including Rotary Club Members. I know that Emily has a full programme planned for the coming season and the Centre Green is a great asset for Bowls Canterbury to have.

8 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30th APRIL 2017

Memberships: Traditional Club membership totals continue to fall with the latest Annual Returns received showing 3192 full paying members and 15 student members resulting in an overall decrease of 120 members.

However, casual players continue to increase with over 10,000 reported participations last year.

Statistics from Bowls New Zealand show that Bowls Canterbury still leads the way in most categories of membership and participations, so the problem is country-wide and we are responding better than most. It is still disappointing that the numbers of young bowlers are not continuing to rise, especially as Emily continues to expand her youth/school programmes, this is an area that Clubs will have to look at and embrace if our game is to continue to thrive and Clubs to survive.

Events and Results: The Centre has had another very successful year – both in team and individual performances – a full listing of their achievements is included in another section of this Report – congratulations to you all and I hope that this is repeated next year and for many years to come.

The highlight for me this year was the Men’s 7’s team winning the National Intercentre Competition on the same day that I celebrated my 65th birthday – the best birthday present ever. The Centre has won one of the Intercentre titles each of the four seasons that I have been involved and I believe that this is testament to our strong Interclub Programme of events – I sincerely hope that the programme changes made for the coming season do not affect this success rate.

9 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30th APRIL 2017

Volunteers: Volunteers are an essential part of ant sports organization and Bowls Canterbury is very thankful for the tremendous work our volunteers do on behalf of the Centre and they have given up a great deal of their time last year as we hosted the World Bowls in addition to all of our usual events.

It is impossible to name all of the many volunteers that help throughout the season but I would wish to mention a few – Ann Wright for providing umpires for the many events we run and the many umpires who have given up their time – the unsung heroes of our game, we would be lost without them, Stu Dalley for helping with green allocations for our events – a thankless job becoming harder.

Selectors, Managers and Coaches dedicate a great deal of time in travelling to watch players, coach them, pick them and the travel with them to all of the various representative games – a big commitment over the season – a great effort from all involved with special mention to Darryl Hawker, Ron Matheson and Pam Clark, who were very visible at all of the Centre events and many of the Interclub fixtures.

Coaches also give up a lot of their time, both for the Centre and also their Clubs, and many help out during our winter coaching programmes for new and developing bowlers. Greenkeepers also give a great deal of time in producing the best greens in New Zealand, if not the World, and the Centre recognizes their efforts, epitomised by the tremendous work those greenkeepers and their helpers performed in getting greens ready for the hosting of the National Intercentre Under 8’s Development Event, when after 4 days of continuous rain these heroes put in 6 hours or more on the Friday morning to ensure that the event started on time early on the Friday afternoon.

And Finally: It is now time to hand over the reins to Mel Mather, who I am sure will do a great job in her new role, and build on the foundations that she has helped to establish over the last 3 years.

I would like to personally thank Mel, Emily and Katie for their help and support – it has been a privilege to work with you and I hope that you continue the great work that you all do. I would also like to thank the Board who have never given less than 100% support to me during my role as CEO and together we have built a legacy that will enable to Bowls Canterbury to move forward in the coming years.

I will miss you all – but it is now time to disappear into my vegetable plot. Keep safe and winter well – start setting those goals for the next bowling season.

Adrian Robins Chief Executive Officer (Outgoing)

10 YOUTH & DEVELOPMENT - ANNUAL REPORT DIRECTORY AS AT 30th APRIL 2017

Kiwibowls Kiwibowls saw a massive rise in school participation. Last year Kiwibowls saw 2216 total participation to 3894 total participation this year. To achieve this, Kiwibowls was delivered to 15 schools during Term 4 2016 and Term 1 2017. The Bowling Clubs involved were imperative to this success as without the Clubs supporting the programme we would not be able to reach the same schools and students that we did.

New Age Bowls Programme This is a new initiative that includes all year levels in the Primary School sector. The New Age Bowls Programme is for Year 0 – 4 Students to provide fun and entertaining activities while learning the very basics of bowls and fundamental sports skills. This programme saw 1176 total participations and 444 individual participations.

Primary School Sports Canterbury Intermediate Pairs Tournament This Tournament is for Year 7 to Year 8 students. The 2017 Tournament saw 45 teams enter from across the intermediate schools in Canterbury. This year we had to change venue from the Centre Green to Bowls Papanui as we needed a two-green club. Bowls Papanui were a fantastic help and made the tournament run smoothly.

Selwyn Sports Trust - Koru Games – Lawn Bowls 60 Pairs teams from across Canterbury came to Lincoln Bowling Club in September 2016. Lincoln Bowling Club were the host club again for the event. Each year the Koru Games numbers continue to grow and we hope to see growth in the Lawn Bowls division also.

Holiday programmes During the Term 1/2 School holidays 10 different CASPA programmes were visited and 151 participants were taught bowls. The ages of these participants were between 5 years and 13 years.

11 YOUTH & DEVELOPMENT - ANNUAL REPORT DIRECTORY AS AT 30th APRIL 2017

Children’s Day Approximately 300 children gave bowls a go at the annual Christchurch City Council Event, held this year on the East side of Christchurch in Burwood on ‘red zone’ land. A great use of green space.

KidsFest This year we increased the venues and used artificial greens to give kids a great experience of Lawn Bowls. We had full capacity at all three venues totalling 90 kids participating in the three sessions available. The following clubs were involved in this programme; Halswell BC, Kaiapoi Riverside BC, and St Martins BC. All three clubs were fantastic in their efforts to help and assist. We will look to increase the venues and participations moving forward.

Wednesday Sport Programme Term 4 2016 saw a drop in participation numbers last year with only 10 attending the programme. However, there was a massive increase in the number of entries for Term 1. 54 entries were counted, with 32 were consistently attending. Due to the growth in Term 1, we hope to reintroduce clubs into hosting the programme.

Secondary Schools Pairs and Singles Tournament In the Singles event this year we had 4 entries and in the Pairs event we have 8 entries. The winner of the Singles event was Alex Wilkinson from Villa Maria College and the winners for the Pairs event was Chenielle Clark and Bonnie Taylor from Burnside High School.

South Island Secondary Schools Pairs and Singles Tournament This is the second year this tournament was run through Bowls Canterbury on behalf of the New Zealand South Island Secondary Schools Council. Entries for these events were as follows: Schools – 8 Singles entries – 12 Pairs entries - 13 This year again we had a lot of interest from outside of Canterbury. With schools coming from Oamaru, Timaru, and Ashburton.

12 YOUTH & DEVELOPMENT - ANNUAL REPORT DIRECTORY AS AT 30th APRIL 2017

NCEA Programme Christchurch Boys High School students played bowls at the Centre Green during 2016. They completed the requirements set and gained their credits. There were 90 students who completed the programme.

Bowls Canterbury U20s Competition The U20s Singles event was postponed until the day before the Centre Finals Weekend. We postponed the event as there was more opportunity for players to be available then when it was scheduled in the Playing programme. This year we saw, 4 entries from across Canterbury.

Junior Classic – Coaching Clinic The Junior Classic was held at Rangiora BC and St Martins BC during August 2016. There was a total of 58 participants ranging from first year bowlers to fourth year bowlers. Coaches from across Canterbury helped with the running of the events.

Events This season we offered clubs the option of taking over and run some of the events that are offered to Bowls Canterbury. Woolston Park Bowling Club is one example of them picking up one of our trailers and taking it to an event to have opportunity to promote Bowls and their Club.

World Bowls Throughout the first part of the season, I was tasked to help promote the World Bowls events through the public and through the schools. We were able to complete 9 Have a Go sessions at 3 schools. 4 Have a Go sessions at local clubs with artificial greens. Promoted World Bowls during the Kiwibowls programme. And finally, we were able to access some help from New Zealand Institute of Sport students to help run these events. World Bowls has provided another platform for students, teachers and parents to see bowls and the spirit of the sport and that, in turn, has increased the number of schools we were able to visit.

Emily Robbins Youth and Development Coordinator

13 COACHING COMMITTEE - ANNUAL REPORT DIRECTORY AS AT 30th APRIL 2017

As the Convenor of the coaching committee from the beginning of last season, I would like to acknowledge the wonderful contribution the outgoing Convenor, Cushla McGillivray made whilst in the position for a number of years. Thank you Cushla, for making the coaching committee an integral part of Bowls Canterbury.

The committee exists to support coach recruitment and training and up skilling through endorsing the curriculum developed by Bowls NZ. We also assist in providing coaches and player pathways during winter coaching at the Junior Classic (0 to 4 playing years) and Academy (5 to 8 playing years). Congratulations to Graeme Rees who was selected as an Assistant Development Coach for theNew Zealand Blackjacks.

The Junior Classic last year was led by Gillian Abel and was run at two venues over three Sundays in August, at which 56 bowlers attended. The Academy led by Darren Redway, was held in September at which 14 bowlers attended. Thank you to both Gillian and Darren for organising these events.

Youth Development was again led by Emily Robbins. Each year the programmes Emily runs, attracts more and more young people to our great game.

Congratulations to Pam Clark who was named as Bowls Canterbury Coach of the year for the 2015/16 season.

15 GREEN KEEPERS ASSOCIATION - ANNUAL REPORT DIRECTORY AS AT 30th APRIL 2017

It is my pleasure to once again give you the president’s report. It was a dry Summer but a very wet Autumn. The greens this season were of a high standard and played well. Well done to all the Greenkeepers for all your hard work.

I would like to thank Terry Stewart and Terry Rossiter who have come onto our Canterbury Greenkeepers Association Executive during the year.

As you will all know Robin Moffat has been very sick but I am pleased to say he is recovering well and the last time I saw him he has come a long way and although he has a long way to go yet he is avery determined guy and I have no doubt he will be back playing bowls at some stage hopefully next season

Well done to Ray Grigg and his team on the planing machine. This is Rays 2nd year working the planer and he has done a very good job with it. Well done to you all. I have most likely missed something and if so I apologize but keep the good work up.

South Island Green Keepers Conference The South Island Green Keepers Conference this last year was held at the New Papanui Club in Sawyers Arms road. It was a very interesting conference and we had over 90 attend from all over NZ with greenkeepers from Auckland and other parts of the North Island coming to it. I would like to thank the team that helped organize and run it and look forward to seeing you all in Balclutha for this years conference. We would like as many as possible of our Canterbury members there to help make this years conference a success for Balclutha.

Once again I must point out the importance of attending field days and it doesn’t matter how long you have been a greenkeeper there is always something you can learn that will help you. If you have anything that you would like to have included in the field days please let us know.

I would like to thank our Secretary/Treasurer Colin James for the work that he has put into our Association especially the last few years whilst he has been doing the Secretary/Treasurer job.
