Casaubon’s obsession is a cautonary tale, but Adam Roberts nonetheless sees in him an invitaton to take Eliot’s use of epigraphy and allusion seriously, and this book is an atempt to do just that. Roberts considers the epigraph as a mirror that refracts the meaning of a text, and that thus carries important resonances for the way Eliot’s novels generate their meanings. Generations of heroes The Argonautica of Apollonius Rhodius brings emphatically to the attention of its readers the distinction between the generation of the Argonauts and the heroes of the Trojan War in the next genera- tion. Apollonius initially highlights this emphasis in the episode of the Argonauts’ departure, when the baby Achilles is watching them, at AR 1.557-5581 σὺν καί οἱ (sc. Chiron) παράκοιτις ἐπωλένιον φορέουσα | Πηλείδην Ἀχιλῆα, φίλωι δειδίσκετο πατρί (“and with him his wife, hold- ing Peleus’ son Achilles in her arms, showed him to his dear father”)2; he does so again in 4.866-879, which describes Thetis and Achilles as a baby. More specifically Jacqueline Klooster (2014, 521-530), in discussing the treatment of time in the Argonautica, distinguishes four periods of time to which Apollonius refers: first, the time before the Argo sailed, from the beginning of the cosmos (featured in the song of Orpheus in AR 1.496-511); second, the time of its sailing (i.e. the time of the epic’s setting); third, the past after the Argo sailed and fourth the present inhab- ited by the narrator (both hinted at by numerous allusions and aitia). -

A Fulbright Fellow and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Ranieri received an M.A. in Italian literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1996, whereupon he began his doctoral studies at Brown University with an emphasis on medieval and Renaissance Italian literature. The King’s Printing House had a monopoly on the printing of the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer in England, and was also responsible for many other publications, from proclamations to the 1606 English translation of the atlas of Ortelius and the 1620 Instauratio magna – the latter work making a bridge between this book and Rees and Wakely’s contributions (including the editing of the Instauratio magna) to the Oxford Francis Bacon, of which Rees was the director. -

The present and the history of the own time: an historical approach Gonzalo Pasamar Alzuria Universidad de Zaragoza The expression ‘History of the Present’ spans over a diversity of trends different in their political birth, main issues, and historical traditions from which they have derived It is however true that from the nineties onward, the ‘Zeitsgeschichte’, the ‘Contemporary History’, and the ‘Histoire du Temps Present’, quoting only the most noteworthy, have underwent changes, and even have approximated to one another. Born in the period of Cold War, supported by institutions and journals, the disappearance of the Soviet Union and the globalization has obliged them to revise their former approaches, and provided them with new opportunities for research. Nevertheless, these all have coincided in being pioneers in signalling the importance of the twentieth century and recent times by claiming the importance that witnesses, memories, and proximity to events have for historians. Even they have shown highly aware of being breaking with clichés coming from the first generations of professional historians, who ignored the recent times because of an assumed lack of perspective, or influenced by the dictum that ‘history must be about the past’. It is not coincidence that some authors had considered them, beyond designations, as a ‘new history’ (Aróstegui 2004, 19-61). To the members of the French Institute d’ Histoire du Temps Present, for instance, this trend should be regarded as a ‘démarche’, as a way of representing the present in motion; a recent time –the time of the contemporary historian- where events, processes, and memories converge (Tresbitsch 1993, 65). -

Pocock This essay's aim' is to examine the contention, put forward by such diverse scholars as Friedrich Meinecke, Leo Strauss and Felix Gilbert, that Machiavelli's thought and that of other Florentines such as Bernardo Rucellai,.marked the start ofthinking about "modern" politics and history . It also attempts to consider the paired terms "ancient" and "modern" - what they may mean and have meant, and how far it has been or may be useful to examine the two Florentines in the context of the relation between antiquity and modernity. Leo Strauss held that we were living in times when modernity had itself become a problem. One might say that the word has always been used to denote a consciously problematical view of the human condition ; but doubtless it was some highly self-confident brand of progressivist or dialectical modernism that Strauss had chiefly in mind. At a much simpler level, we can agree that the concept of modernity always presents a rather obvious problem, that of definition. Must we always mean the same thing? It would not be hard to show that the word modern is what we make of it; its meaning depends largely upon what we choose to place before it. If we ask whether there is a sense in which Machiavelli and Guicciardini have been, or may be, said to mark the beginnings of modern political thinking, the elementary thought should soon occur to us that what preceded them ought to be termed not ancient but medieval. -

Church History Church History and and Religious Culture 94 (2014) 444–478 Religious Culture brill.com/chrc Minimal Faith and Irenic Ideals in Seventeenth-Century Scholarly Circles Hugo Grotius as a Guardian of Isaac Casaubon’s Legacy* Henk Nellen Huygens Institute, The Hague, The Netherlands [email protected] Abstract This article shows how the Dutch humanist Hugo Grotius (1583–1645), inspired by his friend Isaac Casaubon, sought to introduce a procedure for mitigating strife in the Christian church. He proclaimed a division between a set of self-evident, universally accepted key tenets, to be endorsed by all believers, and a larger number of secondary, not completely certain articles of faith, which were to be left open for friendly debate. The doctrine of the Trinity belonged to the second category; it should be treated in a careful, detached way, in words that did not go beyond the terminology of the Bible. However, defenders of this irenic stance laid themselves open to severe criticism: the example of the conservative Lutheran theologian Abraham Calovius illustrates how they were censured for giving up divinely inspired truth for a chimerical unionist ideal which cajoled them into reintroducing the early Christian heresy of Arianism, now called Socinianism. Policelli After the Fall: Vettori, Machiavelli, and the Refiguring of Italia in Sixteenth-Century Political Discourse (Under the Direction of Melissa M. Bullard) This thesis tracks changes in political thought in the writings of Niccolò Machiavelli and Francesco Vettori between 1512 and the 1520s. While modern historians have traditionally emphasized the early phase of their correspondence, I examine two often overlooked sources from later years: the letters they exchanged in the 1520s and Vettori’s history, the Sommario della Istoria d’Italia. By the 1520s, the Italian political terrain had experienced sweeping and devastating transformations. I seek to explore the effects of those changes on these Florentines’ thinking by highlighting an idea common to both of their writings—Italia. Through contrast with Vettori’s thought, I contextualize the nature of Machiavelli’s political observations after he had spent a decade and a half in political exile, while also shedding light on the dynamism of Italia in early sixteenth-century political discourse and historiography. The publication of Richard Ellmann’s essay ‘Dorothea’s Husbands’ in the Times Literary Supplement in 1973 1 provoked a long-running correspondence in its letters page. This correspondence refl ected the assumption that one should look to real people personally known to her for prototypes of her characters.2 But though Middlemarch is undoubtedly in certain respects a novel with some strongly personal aspects, it is also concerned with wider issues. To consider the question of prototypes only in relation to people she knew personally limits the novel’s scope since it does not suffi ciently acknowledge that Eliot is both artist and intellectual and that for her the two are not separable. I shall suggest that historical fi gures were a more signifi cant infl uence on Eliot’s characterization in artistic terms than people she knew and that this can offer insight into some of the cultural issues the novel is concerned with. -

Smith had been born in Hereford, he became a prebend there in 1580, and his career was closely associated with that of another Hereford Cathedral prebend, Gervase Babington (1549/50-1610). His time at Gloucester seems to have been difficult and controversial, and it is striking he chose to leave his books to the library at Hereford, where he was born, rather than Gloucester, where he was a bishop. Smith does not seem to have been unique in his desire to improve libraries’ holdings of oriental books: Richard Kilbye (1560-1620), for instance, left his collection of Hebrew books to the library of Lincoln College,
