Sixty years of work is showcased through sumptuous photography and interviews with leading architects from around the world. Long synopsis At the time of his death in 2006, Harry Seidler was Australia's best-known architect. The Sydney Morning Herald carried a banner headline "HOW HE DEFINED SYDNEY" and there were obituaries in the London and the New York Times. Lord Richard Rogers, of Paris Pompidou Center fame, describes him as one of the world's great mainstream modernists. This film charts the life and career of Harry Seidler through the eyes of those that knew him best; his wife of almost fifty years Penelope Seidler; his co-workers including Colin Griffiths and Peter Hirst who were by his side over four decades; and several well-placed architectural commentators and experts including three laureates of the highest honour the world architectural community bestows, the Pritzker Prize: Lord Norman Foster, Lord Richard Rogers and our own Glenn Murcutt. -

Traces of the Bauhaus in Sydney: Modernist Heritage and Artistic Experiment
P R E S S R E L E A S E 31 October 2014 Traces of the Bauhaus in Sydney: Modernist heritage and artistic experiment The international exhibition and publication project “Expanded Architecture” is devoted to Australian architectural icons of modernism and casts current artistic perspectives on Bauhaus ideas and its advocates How can temporary artistic interventions be used to think about and experience architecture in new and different ways? That question will be pursued on November 7th, 2014, as the project “Expanded Architecture” presents the exhibition “Temporal Formal at Seidler City” as part of this year’s Sydney Architecture Festival. For one night, the lobbies of three architectural icons of modernism in Sydney’s central business district will become the subject of artistic exploration and the scene for art installations, sound experiments and performances. On the next day, a research symposium will be held by the curators – Dr. Claudia Perren, Director of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, and Sarah Breen Lovett, artist from Sydney – at the Museum of Sydney. Three of the most important buildings of Australian modernist architecture will be the focus. The high-rise office buildings Australia Square (1965-67), Grosvenor Place (1982-88) and Castlereagh Centre (1984-89) were designed by the Austrian-born Australian architect Harry Seidler. Harry Seidler, a student of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, is considered one of the pioneers of modernism in Australia. For his buildings, Seidler (1923–2006) frequently worked together with artists like Bauhaus master Josef Albers, along with American greats such as Frank Stella, Sol LeWitt, and Norman Carlberg, thereby drawing inspiration from their treatments of geometries and patterns. -
Get a Better Return on Your Built Space ABOUT OUR COMPANY
Get a better return on your built space ABOUT OUR COMPANY A pedigree startup, now world-class sports facility designers and a members of a select “design excellence” club Not every startup architect’s practice gets commissioned to design a premier-class, Commonwealth Games-standard sports academy as its inaugural project. Likewise, if only a small number of architectural practices ever gets invited to participate in a significant design competition, it is a considerably smaller number that gets paid a handsome fee to do so. Fewer still are able participate on the basis of “design excellence” for a major urban site under the sponsorship of its local metropolitan authority. In our short span of 18 months in business, we’ve managed both. Shiro Architects got its start when it was commissioned to design the Carrara Gardens Golf and Tennis Academy on the Gold Coast, whose first phase is due for completion in mid-2016. (You can see a brief animated flythrough of the design of that facility at www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsjV3-DSk8U.) In October 2015, our practice was invited to participate in a design excellence competition hosted by Parramatta City Council for a 23-storey residential tower to be developed by the well- established western Sydney developer, Dyldam. Before starting Shiro, Hiromi Lauren, née Shiraishi, worked for almost 20 years for world-renowned architects Harry Seidler and Associates, where she was considered one of Harry's favourites. As you can see beneath, Seidler clients, such as apartment developer Meriton, have very kind words to say about her work. -
Co-Create a Better Return on Your Built Space
Co-create a better return on your built space Capability statement, April 2017 ABOUT OUR COMPANY Award-shortlisted designers of a world-class sport academy and member of a select “design excellence” club Not every startup architect’s practice gets shortlisted for a regional Institute of Architects design award on its first project. Likewise, if only a small number of architectural practices ever gets invited to participate in a significant design competition, it is a considerably smaller number that gets paid a handsome fee to do so. Fewer still will get to compete on the basis of “design excellence” for a major urban site sponsored by its local metropolitan authority. In its short, three-year existence, these are among Shiro Architects’ accomplishments. Shiro Architects got its start when it was commissioned to design the award-shortlisted KDV Golf and Tennis Academy on the Gold Coast, whose outcome has already generated international acclaim in the online journal of international architecture, ArchDaily, here: http://bit.ly/2ffZVaC. The Academy was also recently long-shortlisted as a competition entrant in the top 100 of ArchDaily’s worldwide 2017 building of the year sports facilities. We are now working on the second phase of the KDV project, its accommodation block serving the needs of professional sports teams and individuals at the top end of their amateur games. In October 2015, our practice was invited to participate in a design excellence competition hosted by Parramatta City Council for a 23-storey residential tower to be developed by the well- established western Sydney developer, Dyldam. Shiro may have not emerged the winner, but the judges were generous in their appreciation of our efforts, as you can read beneath in the testimonials. -
